In your opinion, it's not marked in stone or anything.
Yet.
You want to talk about shoulda coulda woulda, I also gave the original a 10 because I don't see enough of a difference despite really only listening to the remix ever, call me
@Music Is Life with the scoring inflation. I should've docked it a bunch of points if I knew this would be over-arching opinion.
There really isn't that much of a difference dddd, but I'm glad we finally have a solid argument in this thread. Discussion! Yay!
Well...
Sorry, not yet.

I wanna start this off with a little bit of a pre-lude: I'm honestly extremely happy with this top 40. I checked and my average for everything left - including this - is 9.963. That's obviously insanely high, but I have one 9, three 9.5s - two of which I actully think might be 10s now - and then 35 10s and an 11 left. So while I do think there are songs missing, and that some should maybe be here over others, I'm very proud of you all, and extremely happy. But I would also like to add I'm possibly going to raise the stakes in my draggings, especially since we're
really getting down to the more interesting eliminations, no offense to any of the previous songs. Oh! And I think I'll post my averages for each album for everything left as well, just for fun. Anyways, on to the song. Bottom Of The Ocean was written by Miley, Antonina Armato and Tim James, and produced by Rock Mafia for Miley's second album Breakout. I've gone over these icons enough times by now for y'all to know how amazing they are, as long as you've been paying attention. Anyways, it's a gorgeous R&B-esque ballad, with handclaps, strings, a beat that actually almost sounds like water, sighs, a tambourine I think, and more. It's gorgeous, atmospheric and more mature then most 15/16 year-olds could ever imagine creating. Not just musically, but lyrically as well, but I'll get to that. First I need to say, it kind of blows my mind that Rock Mafia produced this? It sounds like literally nothing else they've ever done. Honestly, I can't think of any reference points from their other work that I'm familiar with. To be honest, I also think they're extremely underrated as producers on here and deserve more attention and praise. (Rock Mafia rate anyone?) So yeah. They produced beautiful work here, and I was shook the first time I heard it. Now, on to the lyrics. Miley tells a story about a relationship that fell apart - probably Nick - and how she'll always have the memories of their time together, while questioning why the end had to happen, and what happens to love when a relationship ends, theorizing it ends up on the bottom of the ocean with everything else she lost. I also mentioned in the
write-up I did for the album back in October on Halloween (
Jesus Christ), that
MTV said the song is about her dead fish. I joked at the time that it was a precursor to her fifth album Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz and the iconic Pablow The Blowfish, about her actual dead pet fish, and while I'm certain the song is about Nick/their breakup since it's obvious in the lyrics, with the production of the song, which she probably provided input for, as well as the hopeful despair in the lyrics, I think gives strength to this being an early sign of that album's experimentation. Anywys, the lyrics are extremely mature, especially for a breakup song, not just at her age but any age. She questions why she had to lose someone she loved, but she still accepts it, knowing that eventually they weren't right for each other, while embracing and loving the time they had together, and telling him she wants him to move on and be happy, willing to make the decision to end it for the both of them. I relate to all of this so much actually, for reasons in the story I told in the Stay write-up. And I'm going to be honest and state the obvious, situations like this obviously don't happen with breakups often. Usually they're a lot messier, with some anger usually, and just in general being upset. And it's worse when you're a teenager, and you're hormones and emotions are so elevated, and
even worse when you're a teenage girl, who has to deal with a lot of bullshit. Honestly, it's songs like this that are why I'll always respect Miley as an artist and as a person. I hope some of this put the song into perspective for those of you who don't like it. The song was performed on Miley's Wonder World Tour in support of the album, and subsequently recorded as part of her concert at the O2. A lot of critics commented on or mentioned the song, but only a few really gave an opinion on it.
AllMusic said it "is so polished and restrained that it could be a hit on triple-A radio", the
LA Times called it a "true-blue bummer" where she sounds like a budding Bonnie Raitt and
Slant Magazine it "highlight the often unpleasant nasal quality of Miley's voice" which I obviously disagree with, because she sounds gorgeous anf not nasally at all, but whatever.
Only four of you commented, but most of you had quite a bit to say. Let's start with Mr. Negative Nancy,
@DJHazey (6.5) who's...actually not that negative but still:
Oh God did I torch this song during the first rate and it led to many side-eyes being cast in my direction. Was not into anything this minimalist as far as production goes, which is probably why I quickly dismissed it. I'm more accepting of the soundscape this time around but I'm still not hearing what the fuss is all about. It's funny because I think the production is the best part now and the rest is just there. Mildly pleasant but not overly demanding of my attention. First of all, you deserved those side eyes. Second of all, thank you for recognizing the greatness of the production. Third of all: Miley is captivating as hell, what are you on about? Anyways, only positivity from here on!
@Entropy (9) notices the early signs of current Miley:
This song sounds like something Miley could release now, she sounds so good on this. I love this song. There’s a maturity about it, the production is subtle and the lyrics are great. Peak Miley. Yes exactly. All of the comparsions of Slide Away to this in her thread only fuel this even more.
@M24 (9.6) recognizes amazingness:
Very atmospheric! Perfect breakup song. Also, is it me or did she really sound like Britney in the "this is it" part. She sounds like Miley to me, but I can kinda hear it. And natuarlly, I'm going to close out with my bestie
@savilizabeths (10) who is honestly just so on point with this one:
Even as a child I was a ballad whore. This probably would have been my eleven if you’d asked me at eleven or twelve years old. I love how soft and like a heart beat the instrumentation sounds. That mixed with the use of ocean sounds really just makes this feel like an underwater dream. It’s absolutely stunning. Miley’s vocals are extremely pretty here too. The layered harmonies on the chorus are just gorgeous! It’s so well arranged. The song really just feels like one long breath out after holding it in for too long. Gorgeous, stunning, perfect! I think the imagery used in the performance on the tour also adds to the underwater dream feel. I wish we could have gotten a music video for this.
Stan talent:
Beautiful performance, live at the O2:
The song's almost sequel, released last year and will be in part 2:
One of my favorite Britney songs, who's production also has a dream-like feel:
And a new fave of mine from a band I love:
