Don't Walk Away was written by Miley, John Shanks and Hillary Lindsey, and I assume produced by John (and Hillary?) but Wikipedia doesn't say, and I don't have the soundtrack on me right now, for inclusion on the Hannah Montana: The Movie soundtrack. I talk about John all the time, so Hillary! She's a very well-known country songwriter, who's got a plethora of credits with Queen Carrie Underwood, and has worked with Rascal Flatts, Michelle Branch, Miranda Lambert, Martina McBride and even a couple more surprising artists like Lady Gaga, BoA and Halestorm. This song is a bopping, sassy, confident pop-rock with country influences song about how Miley is determined to get this guy to pay attention and stop ignoring her, certain she's going to make him hers. Apparently it was originally meant for Breakout, hence the co-write, and I guess it kind of makes sense but Wikipedia didn't link a source for it, and I'm not sold on that because John and Hillary didn't work on any songs that actually made the album. So I don't think it actually was. I think it's extremely likely that Miley was going to writing sessions with John, especially since she was working with him on The Time Of Our Lives EP, and this song came out of those sessions and they were like "Hey, this could work for the Hannah movie soundtrack." It also doesn't fit the main lyrical narrative of Breakout, cause it's about her pursuing a guy, not getting over/breaking up with one. So yeah, I think it was written in 2009, maybe even speciifcally for the soundtrack. Anyways, I've always loved this song, ever since it was first played in the movie. It's not a particularly important scene so no spoiler here, but what happens is it's the first morning after they get to Tennesse, and Miley is determined to act as "farm-girl" as possible to save Hannah, so she goes out to the barn to get some eggs for breakfast, and lots of shenanigans with the chickens ensue while the song plays. From the second I heard it I was like "Sassy BOP" and that opinion hasn't changed. Miley's knack for melody comes through in this song as well, cause it constantly gets stuck in my head, maybe even more then every other song on the album, except the two we have left. I think my favorite part might be the pre-choruses using that sassy melody and the shouted, backing "Hey" to launch into the chorus, which is repeated throughout. Oooo but the middle-8 is great too, especially her voice! And the final chorus goes AWF...yeah I love this. It's a great song, and thanks to the numerous 7s and 8s, and no super low score, it did a lot better here then I was expecting, so I'm really happy with this placement. Critics-wise, About.com compared the song to Kelly's music (fair) and AllMusic praised almost all of the solo Miley songs, and compared them to the "Shania Twain-lite" feel of Breakout (also fair).

Everyone who had something to say at least liked the song, so yay positivity! Our lowest scored commentary comes from @Entropy (7) who describes me to a T: Fun. Catchy. Simple. Basic. Me likey Oh wait, you meant the song. Oh well, it works for that too. On to @M24 (8) who's here for it, but to a lesser extent: I like it. But doesn't reach the other highs in the movie album. That's fair I guess. Next up we have @iheartpoptarts (8) who recognizes country talent: Probably the best country-ish one I’ve heard so far. It’s a bit early Taylor Swift in a way. That's probably the Hillary influence you hear. Ha power! Going over to @DJHazey (8.5) who found another grower: Hmm, seems like I judged this one too quickly back when I first heard it, because the end of the chorus slays a little. "Don't give me, that face..." leading into the fast-lyrics is crazy good. Enough that I'm adding it. Yeah, that part of the chorus is perfect. Finally we have @savilizabeths (10) who yells and gives us a simple command: That underrated bop! Appreciate it, cowards! I'd say top 40 is pretty well-appreciated, wouldn't you?

Sassily bop along with me:

And here's some Hillary Lindsey classics for you:

(It was really hard picking just one Carrie song for this, but luckily Hillary will pop up later so you'll get more.)

(God Lzzy always sounds so good. Always loved this song. A Halestorm rate really needs to happen.)

(Whew, a fucking classic and one of her best songs)

(One of Gaga's best songs as well, fight me)

Yikes, I haven’t checked this thread in over a month. Y’all really did some stone-cold classics dirty, huh?
Hannah Montana is twice the pop star Miley will ever be, and that’s that on that.

G.N.O. (Girl's Night Out) was written by Miley, Matthew Wilder and Tamara Dunn for Miley's debut album Meet Miley Cyrus. Tamara only has a few writing credits to her name, with one for Selena Gomez, and another for Billy's song Back To Tennesse, which was included on the movie soundtrack. Matthew Wilder on the other hand, is a very prolific songwriter, and has been since the 80s, working with many artists and Disney multiple times, particularly on the Mulan soundtrack, and actually produced Miley's cover of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, which left at #72. THe song is a pop-rocking jam complete with slightly crunchy guitar, pounding drums and rhythmic handclaps, about going out with your friends to get over a boy. Relatable much? Honestly, this song has just always been so much fun to listen to. I even used to think it was a certifiable Miley classic, but as her discography grew that changed. Still, I've always loved it, and gotten my life to the loud as fuck production, and again, the sassy lyrics and catchy melody. Plus the cheerleader-esque bridge with the handclaps is everything to me. So dorky, but so much fun. I will never not enjoy listening to this, or will never want to skip it. All of this said, I'm perfectly happy with this placement, even if I also wouldn't have been mad if it went further. Anywho, the song was the penultimate performance on The Best Of Both Worlds Tour and honestly...that was a perfect desicion. It just goes off live. Oh, and it was one of only three songs from the album she performed on the Wonder World Tour in support of Breakout and The Time Of Our Lives. Taste.Only AllMusic had something to say about this, and it was just that it "could easily be [a] Hannah Montana song"...so whatever.

Y'all had lots of words though, thankfully. Lowest scorer @Entropy (5) isn't really here for it: A bit of a racket, but a passable racket. You mean an enjoyable racket, yes? Neither is @iheartpoptarts (5): Does anybody ever actually say GNO? I'm not sure I have. I mean...I think my sister and I did when we were kids and jammed to this song, I think we would use the phrase randomly dddd. It really should've caught on, and probably would have if this had been a single. @phily693 (5.5) is also "eh" about it: The “who who” background vocals are the best part. They're amazing but no. @M24 (8.4) must really love that pre-chorus: I like the pre-chorus more than I like the chorus. But for that alone I give it a high score. At least you liked something about it. @pop3blow2 (8.7) gets all deep about the pop music industry for a second: This a solid little song, but it’s not mixed very well in my opinion. I do like that a lot of Miley’s early pop sounds unique to Miley Cyrus. What I mean by that is that since pop is such an industry with repeating generational patterns & even production teams, etc…. it’s easy for artists to start to sound like rip-offs of other acts. A lot of Miley’s songs sound distinctly Miley. This is one of those, to me. I'm gonna take the praise I see for this song/her music and run. Even though you're right, the production is kinda messy dddd. But I love it. @DJHazey (9) loves the catchiness of the title phrase: "LET'S GO G.N.O.!" is honestly what keeps this in the mix for me because that's so damn catchy. I also have to mention the middle eight where Miley does her best "Don't Cha" impression. One of the best middle-8s ever. Very much agreed on the middle-8. ALso, that was classic.gif about "Don't Cha". Finally we have @savilizabeths (9.5) who brings up something I don't think I've seen? Ever?: Anyone else remember when she sang this with the goddamn Muppets that one time? Because same. An ultimate ‘fuck you men’ anthem! It’s just a ball of fun. I actually kinda like this rap. It’s really cute and doesn’t make me cringe much. Yeah, I think it works, cause like I said above, it's more cheerleader chant then actual rap dddd.

Who wants to rock out with me?:

Live at the O2 from the Wonder World Tour:

The video with the Muppets:

(Okay, why do I not remember this? This was surely all over Disney right? Miley was freaking adorable though.)
Room for one more, so here's Tonight I'm Getting Over You:

You have great write ups that I actually want to read! But I have ADHD and get overwhelmed and avoid threads when I fall too far behind ddd
Also, no. Just...fucking no.
That’s not to say Miley isn’t a good pop star, just that Hannah set the bar impossibly high! Literally when will anybody ever?

Awwwww thank you! And extremely understndable. I totally get the overwhelming thing.

MILEY IS HANNAH THOUGH.

That Muppets performance is a trip! I actually remember seeing that somewhere back in the day.

Yeah, it was. I don't think some young artists in pop always get enough credit for trying to put their stamp on things... which is where I was trying to go with that commentary.

I like 'G.N.O.' but even on some of her other earlier songs I don't care for as much, I least feel she tries to make many of them her own (or Hannah's dddd). I tend to think this kind of attitude with young artists (some of whom are sometimes just trying to be milked for their name & thrown into the fray of the recording industry) is what separates the ones who really enjoy music, want to improve/grow, & want to make a career out of it vs. those who don't really care & are doing it for other reasons.

I love you for giving Miley the credit she deserves.

Catching up with the elims... I agree with our lovely host (who I hope is feeling better now?) that "Don't Walk Away" indeed did pretty well to get to this point of the rate! It's good but there are some real bops left now.

I'm always conflicted about "G.N.O." Some days I feel like it's on par with See You Again and East Northumberland High, and other times it seems to me like the chorus and the overall song could be better. I dunno. It's definitely not in my Miley/Hannah top 20, but it could've lasted a bit longer, me things.

Also, big thanks to @savilizabeths for that Muppets recommendation... didn't think I'd be watching a video like that on a sat night, but here I am xD
