Miley's Favourite Lyric:
There's a risk worth taking, a pain worth aching. (Cause sometimes it is worth it and you have to remember that).
Lilly's Favourite Lyric: Find the magic, go and grab it. Your
fate is in your hands.

Yay! I'm back! Anyway, let's get on with it. Good and Broken was written by Miley, Antonina Armato and Tim James and produced by Rock Mafia for Miley's debut album Meet Miley Cyrus. It was even performed at select dates for the Best of Both Worlds Tour. This little bop is a fist pumping pop-rock track filled with inspirational lyrics about fighting through the hard times and coming out the other side. Miley tells her audience that she has faith in them and that they can take back the magic while also advising them that sometimes going through the pain is necessary and worth it in the end. It's actually incredibly uplifting and exactly the kind of song I need right now. Listening to it now everything is suddenly hitting me a lot harder than it ever has before. My mental health has taken a serious dip over the last month. Without going into too much detail, I've suffered from anxiety/depression/mania for years now and sometimes it feels like I've been fighting forever, never really getting any better. I know that's not true, but it definitely feels like that at times. Sometimes it's really exhausting, but there's something about this song right now that feels as if it's telling me to fight and giving me the strength to. That's not something I expected to be feeling right now. Maybe that means this is the start of things going uphill? And I really hope so. In hindsight my score is definitely too low considering the breakthrough I just had. Something more like an 8.5 to a 9.25 seems more fitting. It's a shame we can't change the past, isn't it? Baby Miley definitely delivered something special here.

I couldn't find any critics thoughts on the song, so we'll turn it over to my favourite critics. You guys! Let's start with my own (7.5) stupidity, shall we?: There isn't much to say about this one besides it's a pretty good song. It doesn't stick out much on the album but it's nice. Jokes on me, since I wound up doing it's write up and found plenty to say. I seem to have offended our host again too. "NICE? That's it? It's one of the best on the album!" Yeah, well you also think Clear is the worst song on the album so your judgement is irrelevant anyway. @M24 (9) is definitely here for it: The chorus has a lot of energy. As I keep rating, I realise that I'm a sucker for these rock pop teen songs xD so I'm obviously rating this one very highly for what it is. Miley really has delivered plenty of those over the years. I miss that. Our host agrees as well. "SAME here!" Love the enthusiasm. The usually tasteful @pop3blow2 (6.5) is less positive: This one comes down a bit generic for me. I feel like I get what you mean, but at the same time I hope this write up gets you to see it differently. Our always positive host believes that the dreaded 'g' word shouldn't count this out. "Hmmmm...does that mean it's not amazing?" @phily693 (10) reminisces: What a fucking bop! I remember my friends and I had this on repeat so much that their three year old sister would just randomly sing "we can we can". Such impact! I actually love this. I have so many memories attached to some of these songs too. Actually, in terms of this one, I think I have this memory of watching her perform it on American Idol or something while I was at a family friends place. Dunno if that's real. Our host toasts your taste. "TASTE! To you, your friends and their sister!" A mood. @iheartpoptarts (7) had a change of heart: Was gonna 6 this but the middle 8 is kind of a moment. I'm with you! It's so damn anthemic! Of course, our host agrees. "Yes. Yes it really is." Let's close with my favourite ballad hater, @DJHazey (10) who has a lot of thoughts: This chorus is Start All Over levels of energy, so of course I stan it too. But can I point you all to the only moment that really matters here: coming out of the middle eight with the instrumentals almost stripped away, Miley's vocals turned up a notch, almost like a massive key change is occurring and I live every time. The song should've ended on that note though. I don't even care if that would make the song "too short" because the actual fade out is a tad useless if I'm being honest. I mean, I don't mind the way it ends. It's cute. As usual, our host corrects him. "Or it could have had a double chorus with an actual key change and "bang" of an ending instead of the actual, more quiet ending, cause it's not a fade out. But I get what you mean." That would have been fun actually. I love a good key change!

Now to hand the mic to our Miley who is extremely passionate, as always.

"This has always been one of my favorite songs on this album and honestly...one of my favorite Miley songs in general? Maybe? It's just a perfect rock-pop BOP with lyrics about being broken, and being okay and trying to live with that and using it to your advantage (I think? Honestly, I'm not really sure, I just know I love them.) and that production is so fucking good, especially the driving electric guitar that just races through the song. And the chorus is such a rush. It took me forever to get it down too. We love a wordy mouthful in our choruses! Then that middle-8...it's just everything. The way it builds, then launches into that final chorus...*chef's kiss*. I love the performance of it on tour as well! Thank God they included it as a bonus feature since it wasn't part of the original premiere. She just looks like such a rock star with so much charisma. God I love her. I'm glad it did really well already here, but I think I would've liked to see this in the top 30. Still, great job getting this so far everyone."

You really describe the music super well. And yeah, this definitely could have outlasted some of the erm....choices we have left. So I'm with you in wishing it had made the top 30. Do better fam!

Feel the power and emotion once again!

Watch Miley kill it on stage! A true rockstar! (Which speaking of, I'm still mad at you all for eliminating!)

More Rock Mafia produced goodness. God, this song will never not go OFF!

Great write-up, @savilizabeths! Just as good as our host's!

You're welcome for me compensating the low scores of Good & Broken with a relatively high score for my standards! It's a real rock pop banger, maybe not a classic but still manages to give me a lot of energy! I never paid much attention to the lyrics, but you're right, the verses especially are pretty meaningful for me.

And there's so much love from you guys for Aly & AJ, I love it. The unappreciated-by-the-GP Disney queens.

Can we all take a moment to send some major love to our host? @Music Is Life is working his damn butt off in his offline life and that kinda thing really can take a toll. Not being able to be there to help him or even just hug him really sucks so I'm posting here to tell you to all send as many virtual hugs possible his way. He's such a special human with the biggest heart I've ever known and I love him very much. A true friend indeed.

Throw him all the love and compliments. This has been Sav's Emotional Support Hour. Back to your regular scheduled programming.

I don't completely know what's going on in your offline life @Music Is Life (are you secretly a pop star and just being pulled in too many directions by your double-life! Whoa, rate just went super-meta... I like it!)

Seriously, hope all is good & take your time here as you deal with life. It's sweet that @savilizabeths cares about you so much.

That said, if y'all can eliminate that remix pretty soon here, yeah, that'd be greeeeaaaaat.

HA! I wish that's what it was. It's just...college life and me overextending myself while procrastinating is the best way to sum it up. Thank you so much.

Yeah she's the best to be honest.

I'd love to, but you miiiiiiiiiight have to wait a bit for it. Maybe.

I echo the sentiment and send a big offline hug to @Music Is Life! After reading @savilizabeths's comment though, I expected some kind of juicy romantic story behind him taking more time to write the elimination posts. Kind of bummed it was just boring college work and procrastination :P Now you all owe me a romantic real-life story.

Jokes aside, hope you're doing well, @Music Is Life! Take as much time as you need, and anyway I'm sure our great sub-host (is that a thing?) can continue to help out if you'd like to move things faster.

I may have something romantic for you later haha.
Yeah, she will be doing a couple more at least, because she's amazing

HEY EVERYBODY!!! So sorry about the lack of...well anything in here. My life has been extremely crazy this week, as has @savilizabeths so we've been trying to sort things out.
Now some of you Americans might already be aware, but every state and city college in New York (where I live) is required to move their classes online due to the Corona Virus. This of course, includes Cayuga Community College, where I attend. This was announced on Wednesday, and it sent me spiraling into a panic about how exactly this will work, and what it would mean for specific classes and what I am supposed to do. After a couple days of gathering info, and understanding more, I've calmed down some, and am less worried and more focused. Add to the fact that this week included opening night of a play I'm in (it was Thursday) and I've been extremely distracted.
All of this said, I'm now going to share some of my college info with you: Any class possible is becoming an online course to diminish human interaction, to hopefully stop the spread of the disease. For classes where online courses won't work - such as, for me personally, chorus, musical theater and vocal lessons - they are still going on as normal. But the other three classes I take - Algebra, English II and Creative Writing - will be strictly online, meaning I will do the work for them at my own pace.
What this means for my forum activities is more free time to get stuff - rates, eliminations, or just catching up - done, because I won't have to spend time in hour or more oong classrooms, and only need to work on the specific homework for those classes. In fact, every Tuesday and Thursday - and possibly Friday, depending on the verdict for clubs - I'll be home all day long. So basically, I'll be able to spend more time here and shift some more focus to the forum.
All of this said, due to the show, I've been very busy at night and very tired afterwards. But I'm free most of the day tomorrow, and all day Sunday, so I look forwards to getting this back on track this weekend.

I'm still extremely worried about my future as a college student, particularly for this semester, especially since I'm a hardcore procrastinator who can barely get my work done when I have to go to actual classes, but we'll see how it goes.

And in regards to me. I was all ready to post an elimination (I have all the stuff for it) but I’ve been pretty open here lately about my mental health struggles. I had to go to the doctors and do a bunch of stuff related to it. Obviously not much I could do about that. I felt a little guilty because I promised to help out here but my mental health is always the most important.

Things are looking up though. This is the first good day I’ve had in awhile and I’ve been referred to our mental health clinic. I’m going to be fine. And of course I will continue to help out our host if he should need it.

That said, my rate (link in my signature) closes in two days so I’ll be starting eliminations for that very soon. I hope to see you there.

Much love to @Music Is Life because all of that sounds very stressful. Things aren’t at that level yet in NZ but the whole thing has definitely been triggering my anxiety. Stay safe all of you!

Thanks for the update, you guys!

Hope you're feeling better, @savilizabeths! Of course your health is more important!! I'm glad you were able to make appointments so soon, particularly in these challenging COVID-19 times where lots of people are being quarantined without access to mental health professionals (and gosh, I wouldn't be surprised if anxiety/OCD/depression rates don't rise in the upcoming weeks, both for isolated and non-quarantined folks).

Your classes are so diverse, @Music Is Life! I'm not sure if you're lucky or unlucky that all the music-related courses are still going on. For one thing it's a bit of a risk to go to class with an outbreak going on, but on the other hand, the semester would probably be wasted if you had no face-to-face classes. Studying Algebra online is a daunting prospect though, I hope it's not too difficult for you. And speaking as a fellow procrastinator, I'd keep your phone and laptop far away from your desk if you want to get things done... otherwise it's so easy to get distracted. I've never learned much from going to classes per se, but at least it forced me to pay attention to the topics without electronic stimulus around me.

Yeah they are haha. I personally think I'm lucky, because I love the classes so much, and its giving me something to hold onto, and as of right now, everyone in those classes are healthy. It is extremely daunting, and while I'm pretty good at actually doing math, I hate it with a burning passion, so I have almost no motivation to do it.
That's great advice, the only issue being is I will need to actually use my laptop to do my work, which means the temptation will certainly be there. Which is another reason why I'm so worried, as there's nothing to stop me from checking out random online stuff.

Also, so sorry about the lack of an elim today as well. Ended up being focused on getting some rates done, so didn't think about doing one, then I had to do the show. But I have nothing to do tomorrow, and I will refuse to let the day end without getting out at least 2 more songs.

It's been a week, but I finally have another one for you....

Breakout was written by Gina Schock Ted Bruner and Trey Vittetoe, and produced by Scott Cutler and Anne Preven (who also produced These Four Walls, which left at #55) for Miley's second album of the same name. Gina Schock is probably best known as the drummer of the all-female band The Go-Go's, who are honestly iconic, and two songs of theirs are being featured in @DJHazey's upcoming 80s Classic Hits by Female Vocalists Rate. That said, Gina also co-wrote four of the songs on Selena Gomez & The Scene's debut album Kiss & Tell. Anyway, Ted Bruner is a song-writer and producer, who also worked on the aforementioned Selena album, as well as with Katy Perry on her debut. ANd Trey Vittleoe is also a songwriter and producer, who also worked on that Selena album. Okay, so they all worked on the same four songs, but still. Breakout was actually originally ment for Katy's debut, One of the Boys, but it was eventually given to Miley, with Katy still providing backing vocals. Thank God, because these lyrics being sung by Katy would've made no sense, as she was well out of high school by then. I've always felt like Miley really sold this song with her vocals and energy, which is amazing, considering she was being home-schooled at the time. I actually meant for my bestie Lilly to do this, but life got in her way, and I can do it now, but let me just post My Thoughts that I sent to her: I am exhausted so I'll add more later in the thread, but basically I've always loved this song and felt it was underrated, so I'm glad it got it's due here. It's just such a pop-rock jam, perfect school soundtrack opener (you know what I mean) and a small hint of rebellion but not really. The chorus is so catchy and infectious that makes me wanna jam and dance and sing at the top of my lungs (when I have energy anyway) and I just can never get enough of it. A very obvious but very perfect title-track for this album, and a pitch perfect album and tour opener. Yeah that's all I got right now. Oh and the Katy connection is wonderful and I love the backing vocals. Also love in the final chorus when the instruments, besides the guitar drop out and Miley sings. Yeah that's pretty much it for me to be honest. The song was performed as the opener for the Wonder World Tour in support of the albu, which as I said, was a perfect choice. It really makes you excited for what's to come in the rest of the concert. Critics had some thoughts on the son, with AllMusic saying it represented the "feisty, carefree Miley" with "schoolgirl rebellion", The Boston Globe noticing the 80s connection, saying the album "opens in the pure pop realm with the Go-Go's-style fizz of the title track. As the snares skip and the keyboards shimmer, Cyrus pines for the last bell of the day so she and her friends 'can have some fun and lose control' ", Entertianment Weekly commenting this about the lyrics for the opening verse: "With that, a sigh of parental relief is heard across the land: Our little girl isn’t growing up. Phew." dddd. And The New York Times seemed to like it, saying "But “Breakout,” the title track, appeals to both age groups. It’s a girls-only call to fun, but it hints at a decadent, school-free future" but Slant Magazine didn't, saying the song is "a noxious Avril Lavigne knockoff—an anti-education screed filled with declarations like "Every week's the same/Stuck in school, so lame!" and "Tired of being told what to do/So unfair, so uncool!" so as usual, he's just being plain rude and that's pretty much it.

Y'all had quite a bit to say as well actually. Starting with our lowest-scoring commentator @iheartpoptarts (6) who must not remember what it's like to be a teenager: I don’t even get up at 8 AM half the time. Lucky you, cause I currently get up a little before 7 almost every morning but didn't you have to be up that early for school? Like most if not all of us as teens? Next we have @DJHazey (7) who is...confusing: Pretty fun, but I always consider this a failed attempt to re-create the magic of G.N.O or Let's Dance. I...don't hear this at all? And it definitely didn't fail at anything. Moving on to @M24 (8) who's nice but also wrong: Love the start of the song. The chorus is missing something though, I still rate it high with an 8. No it's not. It's perfect. Next we have @savilizabeths (8) who can relate: The title track of an album that really soundtracked my intermediate (middle school for you Americans) years. While this one isn’t a favourite of mine, it was such a mood at that age (and even now tbh). It’s so fist pumping and catchy. How can you not want to sing along with this? Definitely not one of my highlights but it definitely holds nostalgic value for me. My original reply was: I just wanna jam to this, pump my fists and fight against the authority that's making me go to college, which is technically my own but still. That aged like milk considering everything that's happening dddd. @pop3blow2 (8.8) is up next with his perfect ears: Really good vocal & fun Radio Disney rush. Yup. I love her voice always, but especially on this. And finally, we have a rare comment from my fellow 10-giver @Ana Raquel who just gets it: Possibly still one of my favorite Miley songs. Sometimes TASTEFUL queen.

Hve fun and rebel with me:
