Breakout was written by Gina Schock Ted Bruner and Trey Vittetoe, and produced by Scott Cutler and Anne Preven (who also produced These Four Walls, which left at #55) for Miley's second album of the same name. Gina Schock is probably best known as the drummer of the all-female band The Go-Go's, who are honestly iconic, and two songs of theirs are being featured in
@DJHazey's upcoming 80s Classic Hits by Female Vocalists Rate. That said, Gina also co-wrote four of the songs on Selena Gomez & The Scene's debut album Kiss & Tell. Anyway, Ted Bruner is a song-writer and producer, who also worked on the aforementioned Selena album, as well as with Katy Perry on her debut. ANd Trey Vittleoe is also a songwriter and producer, who also worked on that Selena album. Okay, so they all worked on the same four songs, but still. Breakout was actually originally ment for Katy's debut, One of the Boys, but it was eventually given to Miley, with Katy still providing backing vocals. Thank God, because these lyrics being sung by Katy would've made no sense, as she was well out of high school by then. I've always felt like Miley really sold this song with her vocals and energy, which is amazing, considering she was being home-schooled at the time. I actually meant for my bestie Lilly to do this, but life got in her way, and I can do it now, but let me just post My Thoughts that I sent to her:
I am exhausted so I'll add more later in the thread, but basically I've always loved this song and felt it was underrated, so I'm glad it got it's due here. It's just such a pop-rock jam, perfect school soundtrack opener (you know what I mean) and a small hint of rebellion but not really. The chorus is so catchy and infectious that makes me wanna jam and dance and sing at the top of my lungs (when I have energy anyway) and I just can never get enough of it. A very obvious but very perfect title-track for this album, and a pitch perfect album and tour opener. Yeah that's all I got right now. Oh and the Katy connection is wonderful and I love the backing vocals. Also love in the final chorus when the instruments, besides the guitar drop out and Miley sings. Yeah that's pretty much it for me to be honest. The song was performed as the opener for the Wonder World Tour in support of the albu, which as I said, was a perfect choice. It really makes you excited for what's to come in the rest of the concert. Critics had some thoughts on the son, with
AllMusic saying it represented the "feisty, carefree Miley" with "schoolgirl rebellion",
The Boston Globe noticing the 80s connection, saying the album "opens in the pure pop realm with the Go-Go's-style fizz of the title track. As the snares skip and the keyboards shimmer, Cyrus pines for the last bell of the day so she and her friends 'can have some fun and lose control' ",
Entertianment Weekly commenting this about the lyrics for the opening verse: "With that, a sigh of parental relief is heard across the land: Our little girl isn’t growing up. Phew." dddd. And
The New York Times seemed to like it, saying "But “Breakout,” the title track, appeals to both age groups. It’s a girls-only call to fun, but it hints at a decadent, school-free future" but
Slant Magazine didn't, saying the song is "a noxious Avril Lavigne knockoff—an anti-education screed filled with declarations like "Every week's the same/Stuck in school, so lame!" and "Tired of being told what to do/So unfair, so uncool!" so as usual, he's just being plain rude and that's pretty much it.
Y'all had quite a bit to say as well actually. Starting with our lowest-scoring commentator
@iheartpoptarts (6) who must not remember what it's like to be a teenager:
I don’t even get up at 8 AM half the time. Lucky you, cause I currently get up a little before 7 almost every morning but didn't you have to be up that early for school? Like most if not all of us as teens? Next we have
@DJHazey (7) who is...confusing:
Pretty fun, but I always consider this a failed attempt to re-create the magic of G.N.O or Let's Dance. I...don't hear this at all? And it definitely didn't fail at anything. Moving on to
@M24 (8) who's nice but also wrong:
Love the start of the song. The chorus is missing something though, I still rate it high with an 8. No it's not. It's perfect. Next we have
@savilizabeths (8) who can relate:
The title track of an album that really soundtracked my intermediate (middle school for you Americans) years. While this one isn’t a favourite of mine, it was such a mood at that age (and even now tbh). It’s so fist pumping and catchy. How can you not want to sing along with this? Definitely not one of my highlights but it definitely holds nostalgic value for me. My original reply was:
I just wanna jam to this, pump my fists and fight against the authority that's making me go to college, which is technically my own but still. That aged like milk considering everything that's happening dddd.
@pop3blow2 (8.8) is up next with his perfect ears:
Really good vocal & fun Radio Disney rush. Yup. I love her voice always, but especially on this. And finally, we have a rare comment from my fellow 10-giver
@Ana Raquel who just
gets it:
Possibly still one of my favorite Miley songs. Sometimes
TASTEFUL queen.
Hve fun and rebel with me:
