Okay, finally able to get another one out....
I guess this was to be expected....
My Heart Beats For Love is the twelfth and final track on Miley's third album Can't Be Tamed. It was written by Miley, John Shanks, and country icons Hillary Lindsey and Gordie Sampson (who has worked with a multitude of country artists and bands like Carrie Underwood, Faith Hill LeAnn Rimes, Mirand Lambert and Rascal Flatts). It's an anthemic electro-song complete with handclaps, pounding, almost marching-like drums, electric guitar, STRINGS and a beautiful organ. Lyrically it's about the struggle of fighting and embracing love for everyone, no matter what. Miley sings the lyrics with a strong passion, showing she clearly cares about what she's singing and believes in the how much people need and deserve love. I've always read the song as an LGBT Pride Anthem (which I wish had gotten focus from our commentators) cause it's pretty damn obvious in the lyrics, but there's an actual basis for that because in an interview with Associated Press (which I'll link below) she said
"I have this one song called “My Heart Beats for Love”, which I wrote for my best friend, who is also my hair stylist, who is gay. I wrote it for him and about how people can be very judgemental. So I think love is kinda like the, you know, morals that I have that I put into my songs, and I think that’s really important. Telling people not to discriminate, and not to judge, and to just be open to the world." Girl has made some mistakes in the past but I love her so much for always being honest about being supportive and loving of the community despite where she got her start. I obviously have a lot of love for the song for it's message but the production is a big draw for me as well. I love big anthems and that's in every single strand of this song's DNA from the arena-ready handclaps to Miley's strong heartfelt vocals. The 80s rock feel of it all just takes me back to my childhood when my parents would play KISS albums and compliation CDs of 80s rock hits. I just love it so much. It did get a lot farther then I thought it would so I'm grateful to you those of you who don't like the song for not outright tanking it and I'm sending love to everyone who stans the song with me. The song the penultimate performance on the Gypsy Heart Tour before the finale, and was also part of her sat at Rock In Rio. Not many had much to say about it but
Entertainment Weekly said "the soaring, organ-soaked power ballad ”My Heart Beats for Love,” a song she seems aching to rip into with real force, easily trumps her pale, pasteurized take on Poison’s 1988 hair-metal nugget Every Rose Has Its Thorn" which I think is pretty complimentary and
PopMatters insults the lyrics, calling them "little more than bad high-school poetry" and wrongly criticizing her lack of emotion saying "Amidst melodramatic organ swells and an '80s drum-roll right into the chorus, however, Cyrus' voice never once strays out of its comfort zone, staying right in the middle of her range without as much of a hint of thought having gone into the words that are actually coming out of her mouth. Hell, she sounded more engaged when doing her Twitter rap." That's a lot of negativity for one person.
Let's move on to the opinions I actually care about: yours!
@DJHazey (6.5) makes a smart decision:
This one is going to have strong meaning for a lot of people who are going to say a lot of lovely things about what that meaning is and I'll be in the front row applauding them but it's not that for me, sorry, and so it's just another middle of the road ballad for me. Thank you for sitting your little straight butt down for this one. Sadly, you were kind of wrong.
@iheartpoptarts (6) makes a comparison that makes most members on here shake with terror:
Almost getting into AC radio territory, or maybe I’ve just become accustomed to the bubblegum. A genre that never really bothers me, so I'm maybe not the best judge, but yeah, let's go with option 2.
@Maki (6.5) makes his first appearance in the comments and immediately gets on my nerves:
Bland and quite forgettable, especially on this stellar album. The chorus is repetitive, too. I like certain parts, though. Hi from the future, but I still don't know what's this doing in the top 30. I don't see how it's forgettable when I remember every single second of it. And the chorus is no less repetitive then most choruses in a pop song, so I don't see your point. What are these parts you like?
@M24 (7) tries to be positive but it doesn't really work:
The lyrics are nice again, but it's just boring. Boring
how??
@savilizabeths (7) hopefully has more taste now then she did:
Another potential grower. It’s definitely very pretty. Yes, yes it really is, but DID IT GROW ON YOU?
@Entropy shares with us another wonderful story:
This album just transports be back to Summer 2010, and this song is one of the ones I have fonder memories of. It was one of the only songs from the album that my friends tolerated and would allow me to play. I was so happy when I put it on a mixed CD (so retro) for a friend, and she told me that she enjoyed it without me having to twist her arm You needed friends with better taste, if this is one of the only songs they tolerated, as if it'd be a huge burden to listen to others. Except that girl, that girl I approve of.
@Sprockrooster (9) pops up to remind us of something:
We stan euphoric key-changes. Yes. Yes we do. Or at least we
should. And finally, we have my comrade
@pop3blow2 (10) who just
gets it:
What a great album closer. YES! THIS! I was gonna mention it earlier but I wanted to give you the oppurtunity to point out how perfectly this closes such an amazing album.
Let's all sing along with this gay anthem:
