He Could Be The One was written and produced by your friend and mine Kara DioGuardi, as well as Mitch Allan, for Hannah Montana 3 and its corresponding season. A straightforward pop-rocker complete with melodic electric guitar, synthy handclaps and boppy drums, it's lyrically a cutsey but catchy love song. The song comes from the two-part episode of the same name, probably one of the most well known later-day Hannah episodes. Because this a two-parter, this will be a particularly long plot write-up.
The episode starts with Miley (as Hannah) rehearsing with her band, singing He Could Be The One with different lyrics, like "I'm not going your way" and "I'm just having fun", which she realizes sound as tired as one of her dad's "back when I was in a band" stories, one of which he's telling a worker at the rehearsal. Lilly (as Lola) says they're not that bad but Oliver (as his alter-ego Mike Stanley III) says they're not that good either, then mocks them in a "girly" voice, until Miley gives him a look. She breaks up the rehearsal to work on the lyrics more, and her guitar player - Jesse - asks her out to luch. She says no, and when Lilly asks her what she's doing, she argues that Jesse has a rep, and her dad told her to steer clear of him. Lilly is in extreme disbelief over this. Miley's phone rings and when she doesn't answer and says it's nobody, Lilly immediately figures out what's going on. She scolds Miley for being stupid, when Oliver is just confused, and Lilly gets the phone from Miley and answers it for her, to talk to Jake. Miley then confirms she's dating Jake again, and when Oliver is surprised, they both hit him and say "Oh keep up." After the theme song, Lilly asks Miley how she could keep this from them, and Miley says she wanted to tell them, but she knew Lilly would say, and they say in unison "You are making the biggest mistake of your life." Lilly, realizing she's very predictable, backtracks and says that after that she would say that it's Miley's life, and she deserves to make her own choices and date who she wants. Miley says that she made Jake work for it and beg, then flashbacks to their reunion, and is shown tackling Jake the second she sees him at her house. Oliver remarks that he's surprised her dad is okay with it after everything Jake put her through, and Lilly correctly points out that Miley hasn't told her dad yet, and says its been secret meetings with code names like "Falcon" or "Snowbird" and Miley says she's wrong...it's actually "Anakin" and "Queen Amidala" (Where my Star Wars nerds at?) Miley says she plans on working on Jake's image to make him seem like a great guy so her dad will like him, until it becomes very clear this won't work. To soften her dad up, she makes dad one of his favortie meals - catfish stew -as well as a boysenberry pie, and wears the cat sweater her dad got her for her 14th birthday (a hilarious early season 1 episode), and has a movie with a plot similar to her situation, where in the end the dad accepts his daughter's relationship, all of which she's hoping to use to break the Jake news. Jake tells Miley that no matter what happens, they're telling her dad the truth. RObby comes home, and is suspicious, thinking Miley wants something, and she says she just wants her dad to know how much she loves him. After the movie, she looks it worked, but her dad says the movie is a bunch of hooey cause no dad would ever forgive a slimeball for hurting his daughter. Jake runs, thinking he'll get hurt, and Miley scolds her dad for being heartless, and Jake comes back hiding behind a surfboard to stand up for them. When Robby sees it's Jake, he's clearly upset, and when Miley says no matter what he says or if he yells, it won't change what she wants, and Robby says he can't believe she kept this from him, and thought they had a better relationship then that, but that he must have been wrong.. (Ouch). To try and make her dad feel better, she asks him for advice on what to wear to an award show, while praising him for his amazing song-writing. When he doesn't give advice, she says she'll just go naked, and he says "Whatever" and she growls at him. After this, she goes to him and reminds him of when she went to Florida without his permission (in season 2, leading to Ready, Set, Don't Go, which left waaaayyy back at #94) and tries to get him to write a song about this with her, and starts singing "I want the best for my girl" to the melody of The Best Of Both Worlds. He puts his headphones in, and ignores her. She's then seen singing lyrics about the situation to the tune of He Could Be The One to Lilly and Oliver. When she asks for their untruthful opinion, they praise it to the high heavens, but they all quickly agree the lyrics are horrible. She brings up the situation, and Lilly says "Wow that's tough". Miley gets upset and says that if this was Lilly's problem, she would come up with an elaborate plan to fix everything, and says someone must have forgotten to bring a present to the friendship party. Lilly says she gives Miley great ideas all the time, like suggesting going to a movie and getting pizza afterwards (ddddd). WHen Oliver asks Robby how it's going, Robby says his opinion doesn't matter and he should ask Miley instead, cause all the matters are her decisions in his house. (Yikes). It then cuts to Jesse breaking up with a girl, who doesn't quite leave so she can yell at him (while giving him her new number) and Robby tries to talk to him. Robby says that everything he does needs to stop (showing up late, the way he treats girls and interrupting him) and Lilly and Miley talk about how much her dad hates him. Lilly comes up with a plan to get Jesse to ask her out again, making sure Robby hears, so he'll be more upset about Jesse then Jake. After they rehearse Let's Do This (as in, my 11, which left way too early), Robby says great rehearsal, not that his opinion means much. Miley puts the plan in motion, asking Jesse if they can talk, and pulls him as close to Robby as they can get. They start talking but Robby moves, and she forces Jesse to follow him, and Robby moves again as they talk, so she drags him closer, and forces him to yell, asking her out. Robby figures out what she's doing and explains the situation to Jesse. Miley says it isn't true, and Robby gives his permission to let them date because he isn't a fool. Jesse says he isn't either, and stands up for himself, saying thathe doesn't like being liked just to prove he's less likeable then another guy. (Because, let's be real, that's a pretty rude thing to do to someone, especially if you know the someone is interested in you.) Robby and Miley talk about the situation, and Robby officially gives his okay for Miley and Jake. Miley leaves to call Jake to tell him the bad news, but she sees Jesse packing up his guitar and looking upset, and goes to talk to him first. She tries to lighten the mood, but it's clear Jesse is really bothered by it. Part 1 ends wth Jesse telling Miley he really likes her and Miley says what, and the ends credits have Jackson and Rico singing a song that wraps up the episode and hints at the next one. Part 2 starts where part 1 left off. Jesse tells Miley he's a big boy, and he'll get over it, and it's vcear she's way into this other guy. When Miley says she kinda thinks he could be the one, Jesse points out it's a good line for a song, if the kinda was left off. Miley starts singing it, and Jesse starts playing the keyboard to her voice. They sit at the piano and start writing the song together (in a extremely ICONIC scene) coming up with the lyrics for the second verse and the chorus. It then cuts to Miley singing the song to Jake, starting with the first verse (the lyric I highlighted changed to "He's such a cutie, he's gettin' to me" to make more sense for Jake, as well as a change from "And I can't keep myself from doing something stupid" becoming "And when he walks into a room it's like a movie" cause Jake is an actor) and as she plays, she sees Jesse's head on Jake's body. She finishes and Jake hugs her, saying he loves the song and loves that she wrote it just for him. Miley says "Yup, that's what I did" in a kind of shifty way. After the theme song, Jake says he can't believe everything is working out for them, and tries to kiss Miley, but she fakes a cough. She says that she's sick and doesn't wanna get Jake sick, and keeps accidentally referring to Jesse. Jake leaves and Miley calls Lilly, and tells her it's a code red, and she rushes over right away. It cuts to after Miley explaind what happened to Lilly, and says she's not in love with Jesse, but Lilly points out the whole "seeing his head" thing. She says she can control her attraction to Jesse cause she doesn't wanna ruin what she has with Jake, but then starts rambing about how great Jesse is. Robby comes in and interruots their talk, and Miley acts overly happy (and weird) and Robby says he's going to invite Jake over for dinner. Miley continues to be weird, and Robby says they need a code-word for when Miley is dealing with teenage girl things, and she immediately uses the code-word. Lilly and Miley continue to alk, and it's clear that her attraction to Jesse is strong (she makes out with a ceramic monkey, then breaks up with it) and Lilly asks if Miley is gonna put a paper bag over his head, and Miley says no, that's ridiculous. It cuts to them performing He Could Be The One wearing HUGE animal heads. The rehearsal is awkward and kind of a mess. Jesse points out it isn't working, but Miley argyes the kids will love it, and then falls off the thankfully small stage. Lilly points out it isn't Miley's best idea, and Miley says she just has to get used to being around Jesse without getting weak kneed. It then shows Jesse taking taking off his flannel to reveal muscualr arms (looking back, an early sign of my queerness, because I know I thoroughly enjoyed it back then) and Miley walks shakily saying "Sweet sweaty nibblets". When Jesse confronts her, saying she's too smart to come up with something this stupid, she tells him several stupid costume decisons she's made. Jesse says if she's not going to talk to him, he'll leave, and Miley decides to tell the truth. Lilly tries to stay while they talk, but Miley tells her to go, and Lilly says fine, she'll go to the bathroom. Miley comes right out with the fact she's attracted to him, but she won't do anything cause she loves Jake. Then starts rambling again and has Jesse put a animal head on. She says he's a heartbreaker and she can't be with a guy like that. Jesse takes the animal head off in disbelief and Miley brings up the girl he dumped the oher day. He says he dumped her because he met Hannah. She asks how many times he's used the line, and he says "Okay, a lot" but this time he means it, and it's different with her cause he can't get her out of his head. He iconically says, and I quote "Your laugh, the way you lose yourself in a song, the way you love life. Just say no if you want me to stop". (We love a consent respecting king!) He leans in but Miley says no, repeatedly and he backs off. She continues, saying she wants to kiss him, and continues saying it when Jake walks in. Jake naturally gets upset, and when she figures things out to let him know. Jesse says "Me too, but for what it's worth, I wanted to kiss you too." Lilly shows up and is upset she missed everything. It cuts to Miley in her room and Lilly and Oliver comes in. Lilly says they would've been there sooner, but Oliver made them stop for frozen yogurt. Oliver and Lilly talk to Miley about the whole situation with a couple foot-in-mouth moments, that lead to Lilly leaving awkwardly with oliver cause "they're late". Miley talks to pictures of the two guys talking aboutbhow hard it is to choose, upset that they're both wonderful, and hits the pictures together, and the pictures start talking back, arguing with each other. It's kind of disturbing. Robby comes in asking if she's okay, and when Miley asks if yelling at pictures seems normal to him and he replies "In this family, I stopped expecting normal a long time ago." Miley explains the situation to him, and Robby's advice is to dump them both and buy shoes. Miley says that isn't helpful and leaves. It cuts to her on the porch and Robby comes out with a laptop, saying he thinks he knows who can help. Miley says she doesn't want him to show her the Gilligan's Island episode where he has to choose between Ginger and Mary Ann and ends up losing both of them, but he has her push play after he leaves, and it ends up being a video of her mom, giving her advice to listen to her heart, cause the voice that matters is the one inside her and it's easier then she thinks and she loves her. It always gets me a little emotional. She tries to get her heart to talk, and the house phone rings and it's Jake. She thinks that's the answer, but then her cell phone rings and it's Jesse. She answers both, pretending to be a voicemail machine, and they pretty much both say that no matter what she decides, they just want her to be happy. She just says she bets her mom didn't see that one coming. She sits on the steps and Don't Wanna Be Torn (which left at #62) starts playing. A breeze picks up and blows the Jesse picture into her lap. She says "Wow" and it cuts to her talking to Jesse, and he says "So it's not me" and understands that she was disappointed when his picture landed in front of her. He says it's okay, and she kisses him on the cheek and leaves. He looks upset when she's gone. It cuts to her at her house, and Jake shows up saying he got her message, and Miley tackles him. It ends with Rico and Jackson dressed in Hannah drag (which is low-key disturbing and to be honest I found the way they act kind of gross, but it's possible that's just me) and singing a song wrapping up the situation to the tune of The Best Of Both Worlds. This is an iconic episode, with plenty of memorable moments, and one of the best overall episodes of season 3. The "song-writing session" with jesse is one of my favorite moments of the entire series. They just look like they're having so much fun.Even though she chooses Jake at the end of it, it's all just a bunch of foreshadowing for how Jesse is truly the one for Miley, which we find out in season 4.
Sorry this took forever to get up, I had to wait to get my new TV so I could watch the episode while doing the write-up. Anyways, I'm extremely surprised this is out so soon. I thought it had top TEN on lock to be hones, and to see that it never even hit top 20 is really strange to me. It's just such a Hannah classic, joyful, catchy, fun, every single second memorable and sing-along worthy. It's no surprise it's Hannah's most successful song, being her only song to get all the way to #10 on the Billboard Hot 100, which is based purely on the digital downloads it got since it was only sent to Radio Disney. That's insane, and just shows the power Hannah/Miley had in 2009. I'm really confused and upset here, I can't believe y'all are letting this HUGE classic, and large part of my childhood bomb out now. Just continuing your tasteless heathens streak I guess. Like how can you not sing this at the top of your lungs? Is it cause y'all are sad and single? I am too, but I still get my life. Anyways, critics had hardly anything to say about this, but About.com did place it at number 7 of their top 10 Hannah songs, and compared it to Shania Twain's music.

I guess it's time for y'all to speak up, and thankfully you had quite a bit to say. @iheartpoptarts (5) keeps surprising me with these low scores, and never explaining herself: The top comment on YouTube is all like “20 years old, still listening” and I feel so old. Okay wait, this is literally me, I'll be 20 in July. But I'll probably still be listening to this when I'm 40 so *shrugs shoulders*. And I'm sure you're not that old honey, don't worry. The rest of y'all liked it though. @Entropy (7) is here for sugary sweet: Probably one of the more saccharine Hannah songs, which is probably why I love it so much. I can’t hear this chorus without feeling the need to burst into song. Okay SAME it's one of the catchiest pop choruses ever in my opinion. @Maki (7.75) also gets it when it comes to that chorus: Another one that falls into the 'great, but overshadowed' category. That chorus/post-chorus combo is really good. Damn straight it is. @pop3blow2 (7.5) gives a pretty decent score but...doesn't actually seem to like it? Me teas: A bit basic… not something I can come back to, but fine. Basic, but oh so enjoyable. @phily693 (8) also doesn't actually praise the song: There’s so much potential here for a better song. Well, I don't think so, but hey whatever. Finally, we have our highest scorers. @M24 (10) makes a (purposeful? accidental) pun: This is the one! Love it from start to finish. Same! And please let us know if you did that on purpose dddd. @savilizabeths (10) is of course here for the cutsey fluffiness (if you didn't know, she LOVES songs like this, especially when they're this good): One of the few later Hannah songs that I have an attachment to. This one goes OFF! It’s got such a bouncy instrumental and melody. There are a couple of silly lyrics but it’s so damn charming. I love in the second verse when the harmony comes in. It’s such a feel good sing along song. It’s damn adorable and goes harder than it has any right to. You are so correct. As usual (most of the time). Since @Hurricane Drunk didn't send commentary, let's close out with @DJHazey (10), who would probably get along with whoever wrote that About.com article: I also know this one and it's an easy 10. You just know it is when you're already screaming the chorus before you even hit play. The verses are so Shania at her peak it's not even funny and of course that's peak pop. Seriously, that chorus is pop perfection, and I have to agree that the song is very Shania. I need her and Miley to collab.

Sing along again. You know you want to:

One of my favorite Shania songs, that was sadly never a single:

And some episode clips! Bask in the iconicness
The song-writing/playing for Jake scene:

Apparently there's an alternate ending? How the fuck did I not know this existed? I kinda wish this is how it ended. It also has that disturbing ending with Rico and Jackson:

A little late to the party... it's hard to believe we lost He Could Be the One so early! I almost gave it my 11, but I thought otherwise thinking it'd be a lock for the Hannah podium. Now I really regret not doing so. You guys did it so dirty. It's a bop and I say that not having much nostalgia attached to the song. I'm baffled as to how The Other Side of Me and I Got Nerve beat this. Really baffled. I demand an explanation from the people who rated those higher than He Could Be the One.

I feel completely the opposite about Just Like You.. I'm glad it lasted so long, thought we'd lose it earlier. It was a good place for it to go, I agree with the rest of you.

All in all... what a crazy rate this is shaping up to be, oh boy. We lost two big faves for the top ten (in my mind).. I can see myself losing my Miley 11 soon :(

Oh, and that was a totally unintended pun... if not, it'd be a really bad pun XD.

First of all, let me say that you don't need to be worried about your 11 anytime soon.

Second of all, thanks for clearing up the pun, because it would have been a bad one if intended.

Y'all really weren't here for the last two Hannah soundtracks huh? I can't really blame you for this one. It does kinda feel like an album of "more of the same" for the most part. Still, a lot of the songs are solid pop tunes, and overall I think it's just as enjoyable as the first two soundtracks, but for the most part, without that edge of having some classic Hannah songs, and therefore not being as recognizable as the first two soundtracks are. I don't really have a lot of feelings about this particular album. It's cute, it's fun, I enjoy it. I do wish a couple songs had done better - particulatly Ice Cream Freeze, Every Part Of Me, Don't Wanna Be Torn, He Could Be The One and maybe Supergirl - but I'm not surprised they didn't, except for He Could Be The One. I will continue to keep these songs in my Miley/Hannah rotation, and you low scorers can live your life pretending they don't exist.

Wow, can't believe I'm basically HM3's highest scorer! I remember it was the first Hannah album I didn't own a physical copy of. I kind of regret it now, but at the time I thought I was growing out of Hannah and exploring more mature pop artists (like Britney) and other genres, so my money went to inessential albums like Britney's The Singles Collection (at least I have the dvd with a lot of her MVs? Though that's not really useful with Youtube these days) or Green Day's 21st Century Breakdown (which I still stan). Oh, and Ashley's Guilty Pleasure was also from that year, so that was an essential purchase because I bopped to It's Alright, It's Ok every day.

I profusely apologize to everybody about the lack of updates in here. I wish I had a good reason for it, but I honestly feel like I just haven't been motivated to write...about anything. I haven't even been writing commentary for rates. But I'm going to get this back on track, and I am going to finish it starting today with #25 which...is someone's 11.

"He Could Be the One" is actually a completely acceptable elimination at this point.

No worries... take your time.

If you weren't motivated to write, good thing is that you can always read something (for example, some rate write ups, y'know, like the one I'm hosting *wink wink*)

When I Look At You was written and produced by John Shanks, with additional writing from Hillary Lindsey for the soundtrack to Miley's film The Last Song, and was also included on Miley's debut EP The Time Of Our Lives. Do I really need to talk about these two amazing writers again? Yeah probably, cause it's been a while. John Shanks is a writer/producer who has done a lot of work with artists that lean towards pop-rock like Michelle Branch, Hilary Duff, Ashlee Simpson and more. Hillary Lindsey is a well-known country writer, who works regularly with Carrie Underwood. So of course, when they come together, they create magic. Like this song. An emotional ballad about how when times are tough, she turns to the person she loves to help get through them. Pretty standard lyrical content for a soaring soft-rock ballad, but the way the production builds - from the soft guitar strumming and calm piano keys, to the addition of drums and strings in the chorus, all the way to the perfect guitar solo after the bridge - elevate the song, and give it an epic arena rock feel that Miley really shines in, similar to Obsessed from the same EP, which left back at #56. The melody is also extremely catchy, especially on the chorus and bridge, and always ends up stuck in my head. It's a really pretty chorus, with Miley's emotional voice, the heartfelt lyrics, the backing "ah's" and the hard-hitting production, all of which I think just lifts the song up and makes it one of her better ballads - and that's saying something. You all must have agreed, since this is the last Miley ballad left except for The Climb. So, congrats, y'all have taste! Sort of. The song was included in the setlist for The Wonder World Tour in support of Breakout and the EP, and was included in the end credits for The Last Song, which I'm sure you're all aware, the set is where she met Liam, as he played her main love interest, and they started what would become a 10-year on/off relationship. It's crazy to think how much has changed since then. Anyway, critics didn't really have anything specific to say about it, so I guess they didn't have an opinion either way.

What about you guys? Well, lowest scorer @iheartpoptarts (3) has a point about the EP's tracklist: Imagine putting this after ‘Party in the USA’. You saying this kinda made me wanna try switching this with the title track to see if that flows better. I'll let you know if it works. She might not like it, but her bestie @DJHazey (6.5) has come around to it a tad over the years: Torched this with a 4 during the first rate. It's more of the kind of ballad I'd actually be all for these days (thanks to the subtle production), so I'm definitely bumping my score up but at the same time it's not really reaching out to grab me anywhere. Just pleasant. It's nice to know that you gained some taste since the last rate. Next we have @M24 (7.4), who typed blasphemous words: A bit too shrieky in the chorus. It's called belting. Look it up. Moving on, we have @Ana Raquel (7) who is...very confused: I never understood why I like this. I’m not a fan of ballads. I’m not a fan of the movie. There was no reason for me to like it. Yet I do? The power of John and Hillary. That's why you like it. @Entropy (8) probably learned something new today: This song is so wonderful, her voice is perfect, the chorus is emosh. Was this a soundtrack song? It screams sound track. Play it at my funeral x Yes, yes it is. To all of what you said. Oh and if any of us get an invite, we'll make sure to do just that. @Maki (9.25) will slightly disapprove of my chorus comments, but was pleasantly reminded of the song's existence: I completely forgot about this song. It's lovely and I love the production. The verses are gorgeous, chorus slightly lets it down, even though it's excellent, too. A highlight of this EP and perhaps even my favourite song from it. Maybe just a bit too basic for me to give it full marks. Glad you now remember what an amazing song it is. (Basic songs can still be 10s though xx.) Once again, @savilizabeths (10) is pretty much able to sum up everything I said in less words: It’s gorgeous! I’ve always loved this. There’s something so moody to the production and the whole song is just crafted so beautifully. So much emotion. One of her most powerful ballads. Even more so when you remember the movie this comes from. The bridge is especially special. Building from something soft to strong vocals and electric guitar! Yes! Always love it when you have taste. And finally, you may be wondering what our 11 giver @TwistedInnocence thought (personally, I'm wondering about the name change). But all he had to say was: My all-time fave! And that;s extremely valid. Someetimes that's the only reason you need to 11 a song. Love you xx.

Sing this to your loved ones:

Enjoy the music video that lacks movie scenes, and has these two looking gorgeous:

The moving performance on the Wonder World Tour:

And this is random, but I've been listening to a lot of Paramore lately (Hayley's solo album, Petals For Armor, came out today) and I'm just gonna link one of their songs that revolves around a water metaphor:
