Hannah Montana 3: 9.69

The soundtrack for the third season is where I think Hannah got a little more interesting musically speaking, though the seeds for this were planted in the movie soundtrack. Yes, there's still a pop-rock basis to these songs, but I feel like the upbeat songs are just a little more groovy, a little more dancey, and kinda new wavey, more so than on previous soundtracks. Take album opener It's All Right Here. Starting with pounding drums, and quickly adding electric guitars, it sounds like a standard Hannah affair, but with a little more...something that I can't quite put my finger on. It also incorporates sounds of traffic and airplanes, because why not? And then just as it starts to build, it does something totally unexpected: it slows down into a groovy bridge that brings to mind surf boards and beaches, before launching into a fast paced final chorus. Or I Wanna Know You, which mixes in some horns to give the song a bit of a jazzy feel. Or the electro/hard-rock pulse of Supergirl, which brings to mind Fly On The Wall. Then there's Ice Cream Freeze (Let's Chill) a curious mix of bubblegum-pop, pop-rock and hoedown fun. And I have to talk about Let's Do This and Let's Get Crazy, both previously featured on the movie soundtrack. Let's Do This is pop-rock perfection with non-stop amazingness, and Let's Get Crazy is electro-rock perfection with non-stop amazingness, as well as incorporating new elements, such as paparazzi flashbulbs. If I add my scores for those two songs to the average for this soundtrack, it becomes 9.84, making it my highest Hannah average (oop). Without those two though, it's my third highest behind the movie, and Hannah Montana 2. This is actually pretty surprising to me, as I didn't realize I enjoyed these songs that much. They don't hold as much nostalgia for me as the first two soundtracks, so I thought I would like them less. I'm glad I was wrong. My heart won't be when the songs get kicked out though. Lyrically, the songs on the soundtrack advance on the previous themes of love, and the double life, as well as new themes of trying to figure out who you are and hiding our pain when needed. As is standard, the songs fit the themes of the third season of the show, which I'll talk more about throughout the rate. The soundtrack also featured a version of I Wanna Know You with David Archuleta, a song performed by the show's Oliver, Mitchel Musso, and a new version of If We Were A Movie, now a duet with Corbin Bleu (who payed Miley's crush Johnny in a couple episodes of the show.) The soundtrack went to number two on the Billboard 200 chart with sales of 137,000 copies, making it the first Hannah soundtrack to miss number one. I think this might have been the point when some people were getting a little sick of Hannah, as critical reception to the soundtrack was more mixed than the previous three, but Miley wasn't done owning the year 2009.
