Now that we're ready for a new page, I can get the next song out.

I forgot to mention it's another surprising one for me, in that I never expected it to get this far.

But I guess that's the power of a certain songwriter.

You'll Always Find Your Way Back Home was written by Taylor Swift - yes, that Taylor Swift - and Martin Johnson and produced by Matthew Gerrard for Miley to record as Hannah for Hannah Montana: The Movie and it's soundtrack. Now, if you don't know Taylor is, I'm sure you do now so I'm not gonna tell you about the 10-time Grammy Award winning queen. And you should already know who Matthew Gerrard is by now too. So, Martin Johnson. He's the front-runner for the bands Boys Like Girls - who you might have heard of - and The Night Game. Boys Like Girls' biggest hit is...Two Is Better Than One, featuring Taylor Swift and was released in 2009. I think it's safe to say that this song was written around the same time that one was, and somehow ended up in Disney's hands through whatever means they have to get songs. The song was featured in the finale performance of the movie so let me break that down for you. I don't think I'll need a spoiler for this one. Okay, so you know that at the beginning of the movie, Miley was acting really spoiled and way too caught up in being Hannah, including getting into a shoe fight with Tyra Banks. So, her dad took her to Tennessee to force her to celebrate her Grandma's birthday, and spend time with her for two weeks, implying that they may be "done" with Hannah cause of the way Miley has been acting. So after a bunch of shenanigans, she ends up realizing how horrible she's been and fixes it all, and I'm going to elaborate on all of this in a future elimination, which is why I don't need a spoiler now. Anyway, all of this ends with Miley giving a benefit concert as Hannah for her home town, performing this song at the end of the movie, since it helps convey the movie's theme of no matter what you've gone through or where you've been, you can always go home. (Sadly, I think we're all aware this isn't always the case for people, but it's a Disney movie so we'll let it slide.) Because of it's placement in the movie, I've always felt it works better as the closer to the soundtrack, not the opener. I discussed all of that in my write-up for the album, but it still really bothers me. How did they fuck that up so bad? I mean really? It's a good thing you change track-list order in iTunes. Anyways, since there's a chance this wasn't always meant for the movie, I have to say I'm glad Taylor didn't keep it for herself. I guess it's possible it's a left-over from Fearless, where it would've fit almost perfectly, but considering the credits, and the timeline of her duet with Boys Like Girls, I think we can assume it might have originally been meant for her third album, which became Speak Now, and this just wouldn't fit on there at all. It's way too...twee, I guess is the word for it. Don't get me wrong! I love it, but I love it as the perfect ending to the soundtrack for this movie recorded by Miley, partly cause she sounds great on the song and partly cause it sums up the themes of the movie so well. Speak Now is when Taylor started to really grow into herself as an adult song-writer, with more mature lyrics as well as production, so I - and I'm sure many people - would've been disappointed if this was included. No, it's best as a Hannah song. And what a Hannah song it is! The country-pop-rock production is perfectly produced, with the guitars getting me to dance, the drums getting me to jam, the melody getting me to sing, and the lyrics getting me to smile. It just feels so joyful, the instrumental is uplifting and euphoric and Miley's vocals really convey the happiness required for a song like this. God, she's amazing. It's always been one of my favorite songs from the Hannah soundtracks, and I always love listening to it. Of course, I have to praise Taylor for her perfect lyrical and melodic songwriting. She rarely ever got it wrong in these days. I love it when two of my queens cross paths randomly. And can I say how happy I am that you guys were able to recognize such talent? I had no idea this was so well-liked or loved. I thought it would be a struggle for this to survive here, so when I realized that it would make top 20, I was ecstatic. I guess that's what I get for underestimating Taylor, huh? I'm glad it made it so far, but it leaving now means that The Climb has became the highest rated song from the movie soundtrack. is anyone surprised? No, no one? Good, you shouldn't be. Anyway, none of the reviews I saw had anything to say about this bop, so I'll turn it over to you guys as usual.

Let's start with someone in the middle, shall we? @DJHazey's (6) expectations were met: Pretty straight-forward soundtracky song that I expected to hear. I think that's why I think it works much better as a song for the movie then it would as part of Taylor's album. It just is a wonderful moment for the soundtrack. And despite a high-ish score, @Maki (8) doesn't go crazy for it: I don't have much to say about this one. It's really good, but doesn't evoke any particular feeling. The chorus is the best part. I'm gonna be honest, you're not wrong. The chorus is the best part. And @iheartpoptarts (6) noticed a lyrical connection with another Disney classic: I appreciate the ‘So Yesterday’ lyrics. I choose to believe it’s a homage to vintage Disney pop and not some copy/paste job. Okay wait. I feel like it was a homage, cause Tay is definitely smart enough to write one, and now I'm thinking that the entire point was to emulate Disney, and the song was always specifically written for the movie, leaving a lot of my write-up pointless...oh well, I'm leaving it in. She wasn't alone in noticing the connection though. @savilizabeths (10) brought it up as well: Taylor Swift pens a bit of a So Yesterday moment and gives it to Hannah Montana to sing. Iconic. This is definitely my favourite Hannah song from the movie though. It’s catchy, fun and infectious. I just get the biggest smile from listening to this. A movie highlight. Miley/Hannah, Taylor and Hilary connected to the same song, and mentioned in the same sentence? The same write-up? The POWER that has. And yes, I'm aware how much you didn't like the other Hannah songs for the movie, thank you for reminding me. @phily693 (9)...actually makes a fair point: The title makes it seem like it’s a terrible country ballad. But it’s good. Very good actually. I totally get thinking that. But also, I would like to point out Taylor doesn't know how to write a terrible country ballad. @pop3blow2 (8.5) will forever be one of the biggest Disney nerds I know: Radio Disney played the crap out of this in 2009. Still holds up well. I never actually listened to it, but that doesn't surprise me. And yes. Yes it does. @Entropy (9) breaks down the greatness of this: One of my favourite Hannah Montana songs. It’s quintessential Hannah. The verses are catchy, the chorus hits hard, the production is fun, the lyrics are faux deep. What more could you want? Correct, correct, correct, correct and nothing. Now, let's end with @M24 (9) who says something really sweet and I would like to believe is true for all of us: I love to sing along to the chorus! Plus the song has a nice message, I like to believe that whatever happens in my life, my home will always be there. So for both reasons I score this high. Awwwwww, amazing. Love that.

What a damn bop:

A fucking classic:

One of my favorite early Taylor songs:

Taylor's gorgeous song from the soundtrack:

And the Boys Like Girls duet (I've never actually listened to this. Should I?):

Oh, tough elimination, but we're at that place of the rate, so I can't complain much. It did pretty well all in all. Very informative writeup as always @Music Is Life. I don't know that Taylor co-write and featuring, which is weird because I stanned her back then (I have my copy of Fearless at home xD). Also, White Horse has the power to make me cry on any occasion. It's beautiful.

Btw I don't hear any similarity at all between this and Hilary's So Yesterday? What do they have in common?

Thank you!
And it's mainly in the lyrics, especially for the chorus of You'll Always..., and bridge of So Yesterday.

Robot was written by Miley and John Shanks and produced by John for Miley's third album Can't Be Tamed. An electro-rock stomper, it tells a tale about how Miley was Disney's robot and they controlled everything about her. It really embraces the metaphor with the lyrics, and never drops the idea for a second, and I think that works wonderfully because, okay, it's not the most original idea for an artist to write-about, but at least it doesn't feel shoehorned or forced. You can feel Miley's anger at the situation through her voice, and I love that the vocal production is slightly robotic in places of the song as well. It's just masterful song craft and creation, and I really love it for that. There's also the fact that it's a complete banger. When it opens with those piano keys and Miley's heavenly "Ahhhh's" And that big drum pound comes in and this quick electronic-synth line starts - AND NEVER STOPS through the entire song - underneath it all, and the verse starts and it's mainly that synth line, and a quick drum tapping, until it gets to "But the sound of the steel..." and a louder drum comes in for every second beat, and the synth line gets louder so it feels like it's starting to build and it gets to the pre-chorus where the synth line becomes even more pronounced, and this "dadadada" drum line launches us into the chorus, which just explodes with drums, guitars, synths, electronics and vocals and anger and lyrics and catchiness - gah, it's perfection. That perfection holds on throughout the rest of the song - the way the second verse keeps the louder drum for every beat second beat, the way the ahh's come back for the post-chorus before the pre-chorus bridge, the way the vocal production almost drowns her voice in the bridge and this slightly different drum-line starts hitting and is most prominent, and the piano can be heard clearly, and the drowned vocals evaporate and she's heard clearly on "Set me free so I can feel Hey-ey!", the epic-arena feel of the lead in to the final chorus with the one beat drum hits and her almost shouted vocals, and that distorted as fuck "I'm not your robot!" under Miley's main vocal, and the way the wonderful chorus carries us to the end as we just jam along with it, and the final robotic "I'm not your robot" closes us out. I've loved the song to my first listen to the album like 5 years ago, and this was almost my 11. I was really hoping y'all would get it to top 10, cause I definitely think it deserves it, but only a handful of 9s and 10s, combined with a handful of middling scores kept it from even the top 15. I know most of the cuts are going to hurt now, but I can definitely still think of songs I'd rather lose then this. i guess it just wasn't meant to be. Damn. The song was of course included on the Gypsy Heart Tour that she went on in South America and Australia in support of the album (lucky bastards) and was included in her Rock In Rio set as well. Queen. Critically speaking, only a few writers said anything about the song. The infamous Rob Sheffield of Rolling Stone calls it a "booming dance-pop opus" and in the only truly positive moment of The Village Voice's review, they call it "the only truly interesting moment" on the album, saying "the breaking-up-with-Mickey song to rule them all, more explicit and bitter about being a corporate instrument than anything else in its well-populated genre" which I have to agree with the latter to be honest. This is the Queen of songs like this.

Sadly, not many of you commented on this, so I guess we'll just get right to it, starting with Can't Be Tamed hater and industry robot @savilizabeths (6): We’ve heard plenty of songs like this from different artists and this one isn’t a favourite for me. Well, we already know you're tasteless. And do any of those songs combine all of their elements and commit to their message as wholly and wonderfully as this does? Next, @M24 (8.3) maybe just needs to turn the volume down?: It's good but a bit too loud for my taste. The loudness works because she is angry and upset. @Entropy (8) describes the album for us: I really liked the vocal effects on this song during the chorus. Again, it’s a bit of a racket, but an enjoyable racket (if I had to sum this album up in 3 words, it would definitely be “an enjoyable racket.) I would say the album (and song) is a perfect racket, but that's just me I guess.

Finally, we have @DJHazey (11) because his taste is (sometimes) perfect: "Set me free, so I can feeel..." comes on and damn I'll tell you what this is one of the most electric choruses I've ever heard in my life. Clearly, Miley is ready to set off on her own and make the music she wants, leaving Hollywood Records and her Disney years behind. The perfect kiss off anthem to this part of the rate and onto her later years. Every single line here is its own signature moment -- if I was a 'tumblr kid' when this album came out I would've undoubtedly made gazillion creations surrounding the lyrics in this song. Beyond the narrative at play from Miley, anyone can take the words to represent independence in general and for that I've come to treat these 3:43 as scripture. I've found myself playing this song more than any other in the past five years, I think, so it's makes things all the more clear that the 11 goes here. Beautiful! Wonderful! Showstopping! The way you connect it to the rate...imagine if this won? The message that would've sent? I would've done whatever it takes to let Miley know haha.

If you don't get your life to this, I can't help you:

Live on the Gypsy Heart Tour:

Live at Rock In Rio:

And Live at the House of Blues:

I think it did fairly well getting to this point! It's too stacked at this point for the Can't Be Tamed album tracks (bar Liberty Walk) to find their way into the top ten (Kicking and Screaming, Right Here and the See You Again remix should follow suit).

There's just something about that Robot chorus I find grating.. maybe @Music Is Life is right and I'm the one with the problem for listening with headphones on at a high volume haha.

Buddy...
Ah thank you. I needed a thread bump and you gave me one. Now, on to the next one, and you might be posting a different kind of gif afterwards.

Of course you did. Of course you wanted that. Cause you lack taste.

But that's the truth, that sentence right there (oop). And damn, I was hoping this would be on the top of the next page for -aesthetics. Oh well.

What's that? Two eliminations in one day? Is it possible? Yes. Yes it is.

Right Here was written by Miley, Antonina Armato and Tim James and produced by the latter two for Miley's debut album. Musically, it leans towards Miley's rock influences more then her pop ones, and is clearly a sound that suits her extremely well, almost having a bit of a punk-like feel. Despite the sound, which is usually associated with anger and angst, the song is an extremely sweet and well-written ode to friendship, with Miley's soft, vulnerable vocals in the first verse giving way to strength and conviction in the chorus, which continues through the rest of the song. An up-beat electric guitar and fast-paced drums form the core of this song's musical identity, adding to the rockier feel of the song, even including an almost-guitar solo after the second chorus and bridge. I've always considered this to be a hidden highlight of the debut, something that was overshadowed by more well-known songs on the album, but was just as amazing. So you can imagine my surprise - and extreme happiness - when I saw that it was TOP THREE of the entire album, and made the top 20. I called for it a little while ago, because I assumed it would have been going soon, but when I realized it was actually #19, I was ecstatic. This has always been one of my favorite songs by her, because of how much I loved the lyrics. As a kid who didn't have many friends, the idea that someone I loved as much as Miley would be there for me filled me with joy. of course, even as a 7 year old, I knew it wasn't really for me, but the message came through: if I needed her, listen to her music. And that's what I did, and continue to do. The song is most likely about a friend or family member, but it could easily be about fans too. Especially with the lyric I highlighted above: "When I can't be with you, dream me near". It's a beautiful sentiment and one of the best lyrics she has, but it's something that fits people who turn to music to heal extremely well. An artist we love can't actually be with us, so we listen to their music and dream we're sharing something with them, as they shared something with us through their songs. I love this idea, and I wish more artists incorporated lyrics like that into thier music. ALSO the idea of the song and that lyric are really relevant right now, since it's we have to be isolated from our friends, and I'm sure we all miss them. Stay safe and happy guys, and talk to your friends as often as possible! Another brightside is I'm so happy no one actively hates the song. The majority of scores were in the 7-8.5 range, which helped boost it into the top 20 where it belongs. I must congratulate y'all once again on your correct taste. The song was thankfully included in the setlist for Miley's Best Of Both Worlds Tour, and she dedicated the song to all the people who worked on the tour with her. Grateful queen. This is why we stan. Critics sadly (and tastelessly) ignored the song for their reviews, so it's up to you guys. Will you let me down?

Nope! Thankfully there was a lot of love for it in the comments. But first, we need to start with @Maki (8.25) who made a mistake while scoring: Typical Miley pop rock tune that gets lost in the mix. I over-scored this one for sure, but have just realized the mistake that I swapped its score with "As I Am", which got 6.75 which is the actual score of "Right Here". Oh well... Dddd nice job bud. Well, if you gave it that score, it would've switched places with Fly On The Wall, so I hope you're not too upset with yourself. And I checked, if you gave As I Am an 8.25 instead of a 6.75, it would've landed at 66 instead of 71. Oof. Guess you'll have to be more careful. Next we have @phily693 (10) who I think wasn't being completely objective wih his score: This “spoke” to 13 year old me, but re-listening now I’ve no idea why. It’s full of clichés and is quite basic but I still know every word and rock out to the guitar. Dddd thanks for pushing it into the top 20. And speaking of rocking out, a couple of you pointed it's rockier feel. @pop3blow2 (9) A bit of a rawk-bop gem. Perfect statement as always. And @M24 (7.5), who even references another artist: Miley having her Avril moment? Very punk rock for her. If she fully explored a punk rock sound, I'd die of joy. But this is a nice hold-over until then. I really wanna give @savilizabeths (8) a hug: This one is just so soft and sweet. It feels like a warm hug. And then it picks up steam for the chorus and beyond and it’s really cool. The lyrics remind me a lot of my best friend. She’s such a loving soul and really makes everyone she loves feel like this. I know that even though she’s currently in America and I’m in NZ that I’m still not alone. It’s such a sweet song. Maybe not one that I’d love without having the nostalgic factor but hey, what can you do? You're never alone sis! Hugs! And who cares, it's still amazing either way. Y'all actually enjoyed talking about friends and "the feels". @Entropy (8) had the kind of friendship I totally would have: So emosh. Me and my friend used to send each other the lyrics on MSN when we were sad. God we were such losers. But yeah, this song gives me those “feels” people talk about. If that makes you a loser, then I guess I am too. Hey, let's start a Losers' Club! It'll be fun! Ddd anyway, our final comment goes to @DJHazey (10) who also mentions feelings, and just gets it: This would've been my 11 one day. It's not like I love it any less, I just have had numerous favorite Miley songs over the years. Love Miley's soothing vocals which lends the experience to a pat on the back you might need while listening to it. She also sings the words with so much conviction, the feels are always real for me. "When I can't be with you, dream me near" is one of her best lyrics. It's times like this where I stan you and your taste. Thank you. And if you had give this your 11 instead, it would've been #17. Just so you know.

Jam and tell your friends you love them:

Enjoy the live perfromance from the tour:

This is a song for fans that I think really connects with this, in that artists are there for us when we need them They're our sanctuary, and we're their's:

And this is one of my favorite Avril songs from the same year:

Okay! So I'm going to try something new. Now, I miss reading. Random I know but pay attention. It's one of my all-time favorite things to do period, and I love it, especially since reading usually helps inspire me to write which is what I love doing and what I wanna do as a career. So it being summer and with such a small list of things I can do to enjoy myself, I wanna keep reading. The problem with this is when quarantine first started and I was feeling overwhelmed and stressed, I started reading and was so sucked into the series, that it was almost all I did until I finished almost all of the books in the saga I was reading, and pretty much ignored the forum, which was why there was so much time between eliminations. So I want to avoid that, so the new thing I want to try is alternating days, where one day, I'll focus on music, and the forum, and eliminations and rates and such. On these days, I'm hoping to get two to three songs out, and start really cracking down. Then the next day, I'll focus on reading, and books, and maybe writing, and just exploring whatever it is that I'm focusing on when it comes to that side of things. I'll still pop into the forum to give updates and post randomly, but I'll be mostly focused on reading. And I'll just keep alternating days. I'm hoping this will help me balance my days stuck at home between the two things I love most and am passionate about - this forum/music and reading/books. Today was more book focused - I re-organized my shelves and have been watching random bookTube videos, mostly based around Stephen King because I'm looking to dive forward into his works again, and am going to start the first season of Castle Rock. That means tomorrow will be focused on music, and I'll be eliminating at least two songs in the rate, and to make this super long post more interesting, I'm going to give you a couple hints for #16 and #15:
  • One of the songs is something that has been called for multiple times and I think will make some people happy.
  • One of the songs has a surprising placement and I thought wouldn't make it so far.
  • One of the songs is a single
  • One of the songs is someone's 11
Let me know how y'all feel about this, and I'll test it out over the next few days. My goal is to have this done by hopefully the end of the first week of June.
