Final placement - #62 (=)

Voice Coils see a bit of a breather as the crosshairs shift to our covers instead. It's time to say goodbye to Mitski's cover of Frank Sinatra's I'm a Fool to Want You.

Originally released as a bonus track (along with Fireproof) on the Japanese release of Puberty 2, the track was later part of the 7-Inches for Planned Parenthood benefit compilation in 2017. Mitski was certainly among good company with artists like Chvrches, Estelle, Björk, Elliott Smith, Mary J. Blige, Sleater-Kinney, and more on the tracklist.

In true Mitski fashion this sees a track shifting in a what is usually a more dissonant or ominous direction from the original. Stereogum said the following about the cover:
violins are traded for ominous synth, his signature voice is well met with Mitski’s expansive range and captivating croon.

I would personally like "ominous synth" displayed on my grave.

Out of the covers chosen for the rate, this one veers the closest to the sound of Mitski's earlier albums or even Voice Coils material. Naturally, this would be the first one to leave then seeing how we took to those as a collective. It's mathematics, luv.

I'd say this is a solid place for this to go out. I don't dislike it by any means but as always, something needs to go and I'm there's not much jumping out to me as something that should've been here instead. Especially with Wait and my lowest Voice Coils scores gone. That's just me, though. I'm sure we'll hear from some of y'all about how this is totally the wrong elimination for #63 or how this should've been gone two eliminations ago and if not that's fine too xx.

I'm gonna take a one or two day break over the weekend before returning to continue with the eliminations. Gonna use this time to sort out some preliminary writing for the next few eliminations among other things. For now have some supplementary videos/audio.

See you in a few days.

This is totally the wrong elimination x

No but take a break by all means! Better get those juicy write-ups in shape and also into the songs we actually left comments for, I hope.

Oh and Fool is definitely the superior track with this kinda title. Can you say "twink rage"?

My brand of being high scorer on possibly questionable covers stays true with Mitski. Nice to know PJ rates have provided me with something I can count on in my life. Ha!

I really loved how slightly unsettling her take on the song is. I was here for some Goth Sinatra. A discovery for me.

He/Him
I gave this one a 6, because it didn't really do anything for me... Even on its parent compilation, it's actually one of the lesser tracks.

Having said that, I do like her unsettling vocal performance and it does give a whole other dimension to the song.

Woops.

The only way I can explain my low scores on the last few tracks is that these songs are up against Mitski's entire discography. I don't hate those tracks, but in one of music's best discographies, a song that is just okay doesn't do it for me. I'm expecting to be the lowest scorer a few times, but this rate is also the one I've given the most 10's in.

Guess which clown did barely any prep over the weekend? ":)"

Anyways, let's get back to it. I wonder what leaves today?

How about our first album track?

#61 - Door
6.517

High scores: 9 (@Phonetics Girl), 8.5 (@Trinu 3.0)
Low scores: 4 (@LE0Night), 5 (insolentire, @Coochi, @Euphoria)
fatyoshi's score: 7

Leaderboard trajectory:
5 voters - #54
10 voters - #61 (-7)
Final placement - #61 (=)

Looks like Lush is our first album to receive an elimination with its penultimate track Door. Featuring lush (kii) piano based composition and vague lyricism this is pretty par for the course for this portion of Mitski's discography. Never really reaching a high spot in the leaderboard, this lingered in the 50s before settling into its final placement of #61. Perhaps the more dense elements veered too close to what some were not enthused with in the Voice Coils material or other disliked tracks, maybe the vibe put some to sleep, maybe it was too ahead of its time for some people (including me, apparently).

For what it lacks in musical distinctness the song offers a bit of a different vibe, at least for me. Some of the imagery painted in this song is quietly terrifying in a way which opposes the more calming instrumentation. There's this picture I have of standing there and staring into the blackness of night, seeing Something with major impact and things not being the same ever again. This is a niche reference but for the horror hunties, my mind wanders to Lake Mungo and if you've seen that you'll know what I'm getting at. I realize this specific reference will be picked up on by like one person (if that) but I'm sure projection of media onto either personal experiences, moods, or other things is something that can be relatable for many ddddd. I'd love to hear from voters or people following along in regards to what they got from tracks as we go. There's obviously a wealth of material with endless interpretations to be found.

This is a song I wish I gave a higher score in hindsight. Spending time with the song over the past few days (plus now when writing this post) has really cemented how much this one has grown on me. The above association and projection always helps but I'm not sure what wasn't clicking for me to start with. This has everything I love in Mitski's work and music in general really. The subtle off kilter vibe is an absolute mood and it's all a bit of a serve, really. I hope this isn't foreshadowing a rate of constant "oh my score was Wrong" eliminations on my end...

We did get a bit of commentary for this one. @Remorque who gave this a 5.5 said "I find this one a smidge too difficult to really get into... Is it about realizing something right before dying dddd?"

This track never saw a live performance or visuals so have another song with the title Door.

Losing an album track so soon is a bit of a surprise but goes to show that we'll really be getting into it a bitsy soon. Anything can and will happen, get ready. I'll be back tomorrow with our next elimination. I wonder what it will be.

#60 - An Atrium (Voice Coils)
6.861

High scores: 10 (@Crisp X, @pop3blow2), 9.5 (@Phonetics Girl)
Low scores: 3 (insolentire), 4 (@Euphoria, @LE0Night)
fatyoshi's score: 9

Leaderboard trajectory:
5 voters - #48
10 voters - #35 (+13)
Final placement - #60 (-25)

At #60 we see our first section being crossed out. An Atrium literally crashes through the ceiling (after seeing some flight) and lands in this final spot. I knew there would be movement in the leaderboards on some level but this was really something. Mama what is this?

I'll say what I've been saying with these tracks.. I'm not surprised to see another Voice Coils track thrown out so quickly but unlike before, I am surprised to see this as the last one to leave. Featuring some of the more out there instrumentation and vocal gymnastics of the release, I thought for sure that would've sealed its fate. Instead it found something of an audience among rate voters, at one point even peaking at #35? Wild.

As you can see from my 9, I really liked this one. I wasn't a fan of the EP as a whole but this was definitely a discovery and takeaway of sorts in the material that was new (or at least more unfamiliar) to me in the rate. It was one of the more musically stimulating tracks in the rate and a nice shift from completely sinking myself into something in terms of the lyrics and emotions that come with them. There's definitely some stuff that I'd rather have seen go before this but what can you do.

We did get some more commentary with this track so let's see what y'all said.

@Crisp X who might be cursed after all and is hurting for 10s at this point said "I don’t know what I just listened but this dark proggy shit resonated strongly with me. Big DIR EN GREY’s Uroboros vibes!"

@constantino who gave this an 8 said "I wouldn’t be against Mitski exploring this sound without the lo-fi vocals in the future, the instrumentation and composition is stunning. Deep cut, but this song reminds me a bit of Deafheaven’s Sunbather album."

That's it for Voice Coils, I'm sure some are pleased. Give me a few and I'll get together a stats post for this section dddddd
