The Passion Of The Groove: The Alcazar Discography Rate - #56: “Next!”

Discussion in 'Charts, rates etc' started by WowWowWowWow, Apr 1, 2019.

  1. I knew this would be out next. I only know the song from the Westlife version so already disliked it before hearing Alcazar's take on it. Normally they chose their covers/samples so well so this is just a bit baffling.

    Next!

  2. Seasons in the Sun is probably the worst part in the rough Seasons in the Sun-Tears of a Clone-Bells of Alcazar run. There was enough content to probably cut all of that out of Casino.

  3. Awww I heart Bells of Alcazar, even though it's basic af.

  4. I thought many of the songs before Seasons were meh, but people calling for Clone and Bells? Bye.

  5. I love Bells! Hope it stays until the Top 10.

  6. See there's my first mistake, I meant 'I Feel Pretty'.

Otherwise the eliminations are spot on.

  7. Don't worry about my rambling, once that Kate Bush rate becomes public information I doubt my musical critique will hold much weight.

    For your close-up, that is?

For album track “Salome,” A-to-the-Zar invoke the name of the woman who is widely believed to be the woman who demanded the head of John the Baptist in the New Testament. Ummm… bop, I guess?

Salome has inspired songs from Liz Phair, Patti Smith and Gary Jules among others. Oscar Wilde’s play about Salome was the source material for multiple operas in the early 20th century. And movie buffs and/or Broadway homosexuals may also remember that Norma Desmond was plotting her return to the silver screen in a project about Salome in the film and stage versions of Sunset Boulevard.

@TrueBeliever (2): Can’t stand this one. I always skip it. It just loses me at the 40 second mark. It has the promises of Madonna’s Ray of Light, but Andreas is simply way too earnest to carry this one off for me.

@mrdonut (7): “Life is fantastic, drastic” – Alcazar speak the truth, girls. The “I want to feel you” moment gives me all the feels.

@iheartpoptarts (4): On my old iPod this is called ‘Salmone’. Way to go, me.

@Empty Shoebox (6): She went to Eurovision 2016, didn’t she? Anyway, look, I gave a much higher score to the song with the clear vocals! Yes, I’m talking about this too much - it annoys me a lot.

@berserkboi (7.3): Some nice lyrics and vibe.

@Untouchable Ace (8.3): It’s interesting to hear how drum n bass influenced pop evolved over time. (The epitome of this is ‘What You Crying For?’)

@Hudweiser (6): Better than I remember it being, are they channeling a lil bit of Sonique here??

@Eric (10): The urgency of those first few lines really grabbed me...and then when the chorus kicks in and the vocals seem to double...beautiful.

  9. I haven't followed Eurovision for a few years now, so at first I thought this was about Soluna Somay (Denmark, 2012), and I HOLLERED.

  10. I've never felt this outright villainous! Sorry everyone! I'm surprised it's this liked.

  11. Salome was definitely on the lower side of their discography, but I'm surprised it's out this early, despite it getting an average score a little bit higher than I gave it.

Another callback of sorts to the 1970s. The legendary performers Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson collaborated on the song “The Tears Of A Clown” for Smokey’s group The Miracles. It was a #1 hit on both sides of the pond.

I assume that’s where they pulled it from. Sorry, these early eliminations are hella boring since there’s nothing much out there about these songs. In fact, the only description of “Tears Of A Clone” I found was an interview with Andreas on Arjanwrites.com that referred to the song as “interesting” and “Broadway-esque.”

@Eric (9): A bit more sophisticated take on cloning than Adam Rickitt’s I Breathe Again. Interesting! Also a bit reminiscent of a Bond theme…

@mrdonut (7.5): NOBODY has ever come up with a wittier title for a song. Readers, in the year 2000 I cackled (like the time the straights didn’t understand why Star Wars’ Attack of the Clones was so funny). Also worth saying that the line “This army of confidence / Is an army of no defence” should have garnered trophies.

@Hudweiser (2): “A room with a hundred men...” - Andreas, hon, we’ve all been there. Oh, you mean robots, right, oh, OK. Next.

@iheartpoptarts (3): On the bright side, Pokémon stans have great taste in pop acts.

@Empty Shoebox (4): Just goes nowhere really.

@berserkboi (7.4): Not sure how well this works outside Pokemon…

@TrueBeliever (6): The Pros: Creepy and atmospheric. The Cons: Repetitive chorus and thin vocals. Reminds me of a 007 theme song.

@Untouchable Ace (8.4): This should have just been about a clown.

  13. Now that one I would 10 hard.

(And I've just realized that's why he's naked in some kind of lab in the video, oh my god, I've never actually thought about this before)

  14. I like Tears of a Clone quite a bit but overall we're off to a great start.

  15. Tears Of A Clone was one of my favorites back in the day when I was 11! I gave it a 9.5 out of nostalgia.

  16. Ha - screaming at the phrase "ten hard!" That video was definitely a feature in my path to enlightenment (hence shoehorning it into my commentary...)

  17. Any reference to Madam Rickitt's I Breathe Again is fine with me!
