Under pressure all week Foreigner managed to cling on for a further 7 days, selling 93,000 in the end to bring it to 353,000 copies over the last few months, they also dominate at No 1 on the albums front and the single rises to the top slot in the US marking a quite remarkable week for the act. It was chased hard by both Elaine Paige & Barbara Dickson (3-2, 85,000) and Prince who though he dips 2-3 sold an impressive 84,000 in the process.
You might not have heard of the husband and wife duo Ashford & Simpson, they’ve scored just one minor hit in 1978, but you’ll certainly have heard their penmanship. “Ain’t no Mountain High Enough” and “I’m Every Woman” are just two examples of their work but they’re now also bona fide popstars with “Solid” which powers 13-6 (53,000) this week to become their first sizable hit.
Long a good album seller Bruce Springsteen has built up a firm fan base in the UK as a serious singer with politically themed musings on the US psyche. He’s not troubled the singles chart however with “The River” being his biggest hit making No 35 in 1981, that was until last year when “Dancing In The Dark” was released and went all the way to the dizzy heights of No 28 but did go all the way to No 2 stateside. Once again it has taken a re-issue to see the track lift off but take off is exactly what it does as it launches 20-10 (30,000) this week, it also reactivates the parent album “Born In The USA” which entered at No 2 last June and now returns into the top 5 10-4 helped by an Arthur Baker remix which is a hit in the clubs.
King continue to improve 6-4 (69,000) whilst Tears For Fears continue to improve sales wise to 54,000 though they slip 4-5, and Russ Abbot is also on the move up 10-8 (37,000). Strawberry Switchblade and Madonna are on the way out however dipping 5-7 (49,000) and 7-9 (31,000) respectively. "Like A Virgin" also surrenders the US top spot after 6 weeks.
