The Popjustice Retrochart 100 - March 1985 - w/e 16/03/85 - wk 11

On February 23, Careless Whisper was #2 behind Loverboy, by Billy Ocean, March 2, still #2 behind Loverboy, on March 9, Misled by Kool & the Gang moved into the top spot, it was #2 for a third week it was #2, finally on March 16, Careless Whisper is #1 by Wham f/ George Michael.

He’s such a perfectionist. He redid the vocals, instrumentation and re-edited the video for this for the final product. How do we get to see this though? Was the original shown on TV in the early weeks of charting or was this leaked to YouTube from some vault somewhere?

North Cyprus may have a trade embargo but not a Hairycub embargo! My partner wanted to go on a two week vacation here. First week Historical sightseeing, then second week - chilling out in the sun!
Therefore this week's HMV Retrochart comes from North Cyprus - have these songs made your Retrochart yet?

Number 50 - new entry from Run DMC with "King of Rock":

Number 36 - new entry for Supergroup The Power Station and their debut single "Some like it hot"
The Power Station are John and Andy Taylor from Duran Duran, Tony Thompson from Chic and Robert Palmer on Vocals with Nile Rodgers from Chic on Production duties!

Talking Heads climb from 11 to 8 this week with "Girlfriend is better" - their film (which features this song) "Stop Making Sense" is doing the business in cubland!

Cubfile:
The brand-new Number One this week is the former Eagles drummer Don Henley with “The boys of summer”, meanwhile another Eagle is at Number 28 and climbing – Glenn Frey with “The heat is on”!
Climbing inside the top ten this week are Hall & Oates, Madonna, Prince & the Revolution, Stephen “Tintin” Duffy, Talking Heads and Killing Joke. Heading south are Dead or Alive, Howard Jones and The Smiths. Half the top ten are US Acts!
The highest new entry this week comes in at Number 16 for Alison Moyet and her cover of “That ole devil called love” which is not available on her current album “Alf”!
Madonna is still the longest runner with her “Like a virgin” single, which goes down this week from 43 to 49 after 18 weeks in total on the chart.

105 songs so far have made it to the summit - but can you find a cassette long enough to fit them all on...who knows maybe in the future Home Computers can solve this issue with a new format?!

Notes
There are thematic similarities between Macumba and Private Dancer the highest entries this week. The girl in Macumba is a private dancer of some sort.
Au Macumba, Macumba,
Elle danse tous les soirs
Et elle offre sa nuit contre quelques dollars

At the Macumba, Macumba
She dances every night
And she offers her night for a few dollars

Madonna doubles her weekly tally easily placing a second week at the summit. Stephen Tin Tin Duffy and Hazell Dean climb to new peaks 6-3 and 7-4 respectively, followed by Don Henley moving closer to the top five 8-6. Phil Bailey doesn't quite match the 20-2 climb in the UK but 19-8 suggests enough momentum for a top five placement next week. Loose Ends score their first top ten moving 13-9.
