Sara holds on, as the expected threat from Joe Jackson didn't quite materialise. But the gap is closing, and it could still happen next week. No other singles are making great strides either, as steady climbs appear to be the order of the day...Specials, Boomtown Rats, Buggles, Queen and Jefferson Starship all make decent inroads without setting the chart alight. In fact, the next chart-topper could potentially be Cliff Richard and the moody midtempo rocker Carrie, which is the highest debutant at #19.

I registered when it first appeared but there wasn't much on there I didn't have on my own iTunes perhaps it has improved? I think I had the free version which had an irritating advert every 3 songs is that still the case?

The free version does have adverts as well as the £4.99 per month subscription.
The £9.99 version does not have adverts.
Their songs/artists continues to grow all the time. I often get notifications of which artists/new releases have recently allowed their music to be "Spotify"-ied!
I actually prefer it to i-tunes now!

The SKA revival continues as congratulations are in order to The Specials who knock Madness off the peak position with their version of "Too much too young" - it is also number one on the UK mainstream chart this week.
Meanwhile Michael Jackson's "Rock with you" climbs to number 2 as it enjoys another week at number one in the USA.

The Boomtown Rats are this week's biggest climber - up 13 places to number 6. Lots of climbers in the top ten this week - Simple Minds, Rupert Holmes, New Musik all go up, whereas Prince tumbles to number 20.

The highest new entry this week is from John Foxx and his debut solo single "Underpass" - the former Ultravox singer seems to have finally hit the charts, whereas Ultravox have just announced their new vocalist - Midge Ure. They are currently in the studio recording an album!

Number 28 - OMD "Red frame, white light":

This young band from the Wirral were busy supporting Gary Numan on his tour last autumn (1979) - they released their debut single "Electricity" on the Indie label "Factory" last September and now they've signed to "Virgin" Records under the "Dindisc" banner. "Red frame, white light" is their first major label release and enters our chart this week at number 28.

The free version costs 4.99 a month? I'm a bit baffled as to how/where/when I signed up for an account, actually. @Ray had created the amazing BOWIERATE playlist on there, and asked me to check through it....to my surprise, when I put my e-mail address in, and a random password I sometimes use, it recognised me and logged me in!

So I've been playing the odd track from 1980 here and there to help compile the retrocharts...

Nah, they'll never get anywhere.

Sorry - I should have wrote:

The free version does have adverts - after near enough every third song.
The £4.99 subscription a month version has adverts as well - but not as many as the free version. There are usually 30 minutes of ad-free music!
The £9.99 subscription a month version is ad-free - I think this is the top tier!

Not sure if Spotify have changed the above tariff/tier system but as far as I'm aware, that's where they were at last month (December 2015)

I won't be able to get my list in until Saturday, though I can try tomorrow night if needed - wait for me please!

This is the last time I'll be able to keep "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough", so it was bloody popjustice when it finally made top five overall (or even top ten) last week.

Just two new entries this week. Thanks to phoenix's list, I didn't forget The Flying Lizards' return to chart action with "TV" after "Money" got six months old a couple of weeks ago -- and despite my solemn promises last week I still remembered yet another overlooked fave from late '79: James White's "Contort Yourself". Or, at least it's another safe bet to for that time frame, as he released two albums in '79 and the 12" single version is from the latter... (The first album boasted a faster & noisier version).
