you are free to include any more obscure songs on your personal list released up to that date (within the prior 12 months).
Are you quite sure about this? Those of us who didn't actually have proper personal charts in those times risk having to send rather stagnated "hindsight lists" every week if we're not forced to disqualify songs older than, say, six months, hehe.

Personally I was already excited about having to drop a few early July releases this week and needing find some newer stuff to take their place...

I prefer a 6-month cut-off too, although it won't make any difference to my own charts, as I never featured anything very old back then, and so won't do now.

I have very vivid memories of Brass In Pocket from New Year's Day 1980, for some reason. Probably to do with it being the first new decade I saw in. So it has to be my first new #1 of the 80s. Likewise I remember London Calling a lot from this era, probably booming out of the shops down the Kings Road when I tagged along with my parents on a Saturday. Cool song, but the 8yr old me preferred the Nolans, naturally!

Just two new entries, as I'm waiting for certain classics outside the UK Top 40 to make their debut there first.

10 09 07 My Simple Heart The Three Degrees 30,000
A new decade may very well have dawned but Pink Floyd won't have noted it as they start of the 80s exactly as they finished the 70s with the No 1 song in the land "Another Brick In The Wall" which shifts a further 78,000 last week to take its overall tally to in excess of 820,000 over the course of last 7 weeks and now looks certain to pass the million mark sometime this year. Naturally its sales plummet from the 200,000 plus of last week but it still managed to keep clear of Abba who spend a fourth week as the bridesmaids in this chart battle.

Selling a further 71,000 copies they pulled nearer to Pink Floyd than in any other previous week but the steep decline of both songs must mean that their respective time is up at the top. That almost happened this week as The Pretenders ran them very close for the runner up spot with "Brass In Pocket" which slides sales wise but is holding up rather well with 70,000 copies passing over the counter.

The top 3 are quite a bit clear of the rest of the field with just two tracks climbing into the top 10. First up are Birmingham's "The Beat" who manage to score parent label 2tone a second top 10 hit in just months, the label of course being set up by Jerry Dammers of the Specials who gave his group the labels first top 10 hit in November with "A Message To You/ Nite Klub". It actually only managed to increase sales minimally but jumps 17-6 due to everything else around it collapsing, it sold 49,000.

Better known for their disco output KC & The Sunshine Band return to the big 10 today and the US No 1 spot with "Please Don't Go on sale of 48,000. It's their first top tenner since "That's The Way (I Like It)" five years ago and looks like a possible contender for a similar chart position here as it has achieved stateside.

The remaining tracks in the top 10 are all falling in the post Christmas slump and with memories of those Christmas parties fading so does Fiddler's Dram (58,000) who move 3-4. The Tourists similarly drop 1 to 5 (52,000). Former No 1 from the Police "Walking On The Moon" continues to descend gently to No 9 (34,000) and the Three Degrees round off the top 10 with a non mover (30,000)

Whoa, there goes my tentative top 30 out the window! (Thanks)

I had even taken a quick look last week at Wikipedia and saw that "Rock Lobster" was marked for '78 -- but didn't read close enough to learn that the album version I had learned to love was indeed a later single.

The things you learn in this retrochart!

Just to be clear to others for the future, my intention with the 6 month rule is not to limit the chart life of a song to 6 months. You may wish to do that, by all means, but the rule is to avoid "new entries" by older songs not representative of the time.

There may well be songs people like enough to have on their chart for more than 26 weeks and that's perfectly acceptable.

I think I will have a top 40 also. Just expanding my list.

Thanks to Russron also for providing links to some of the tracks. Might be a nice idea for people to do this with their new entries or unique picks?

Just to be clear to others for the future, my intention with the 6 month rule is not to limit the chart life of a song to 6 months. You may wish to do that, by all means, but the rule is to avoid "new entries" by older songs not representative of the time.

There may well be songs people like enough to have on their chart for more than 26 weeks and that's perfectly acceptable.
Oh! I didn't realize even that -- but on the other hand, if I didn't drop mine after six months, there'd be so little change each week it'd become rather boring for myself to compile them...

In fact, it looks like it's a whole different ball game for us "hindsighters" compared to alla yous bona fide chart compilers from way back, right?

The biggest travesty of the 6 month rule is no "They Don't Know" which could feasibly have been still on some people's charts in Jan 1980!

Here is this week's chart from @Hairycub1969!
