The Power Rangers Universe

Soon, the Power Rangers will be go, go, going again, and this time, it’ll be on the big screen.

Lionsgate is partnering with Saban Brands (which produces the “Power Rangers” show) to create a brand new “Power Rangers” movie.

While it’s not clear exactly whether the movie will be aimed purely at kids, like the original 1995 film “Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: The Movie,” or at an older audience, Haim Saban, head of Saban Brands, did mention a couple interesting comparison movies during the announcement.

“They [Lionsgate] have the vision, marketing prowess and incredible track record in launching breakthrough hits from ‘The Hunger Games’ to ‘Twilight’ and ‘Divergent,’” Saban said. “In partnership with the Lionsgate team, we’re confident that we will capture the world of the Power Rangers and translate it into a unique and memorable motion picture phenomenon with a legacy all its own.”

By the sound of it, Saban and Lionsgate seem to be trying to market the new “Power Rangers” as the next big franchise along the lines of “Hunger Games,” with perhaps the darker, grittier feel that’s made those Young Adult films so successful. Plus, you might not just be getting one more “Rangers” movie: you might be getting a whole slew of them.

No word as to release date or cast, but here’s hoping they find some room Alpha 5, Zordon, Bulk and Skull, and of course, for Jason David Frank. Green Ranger forever!

This is exciting news, hope it's a franchise with a whole set of movies from the different eras! Such a massive Power Rangers fanboy I was and still am #supernerd

I did say to my friend that I'm surprised they're not getting Nickelodeon involved as they show the series and Nickelodeon has it's own division under the Paramount/Viacom brand. Having said that, I am very happy if they turn it into a young adult franchise in film, and differ it from the currenty style they're showing on television.

I am also a fanboy! I loved In Space and Time Force with a particular passion, they were wonderful, and the series was at it's best when it was dark and followed a proper narrative.

I was quite the fan of the original Power Rangers (I dressed up as the yellow ranger for my B'day party). I can't see how they can improve the nineties amazingness?!

WHY HAVE THEY GIVEN THEM SUPERPOWERS?! That negates the need for fancy spandex armour! Eugh.

Still, this is amazing and the 6 (to 16) year old in me is weeping with joy. I hope they don't go all Man Of Steel and make it dark because that supposedly makes it credible. Avengers should be the template - full of heart mixed in with action.

Fun fact: my work colleague once looked over the partition between our desks with a face full of glee when Stevie Wonder - Higher Ground came on Radio 2. "Is this the song from the Power Rangers movie when they're all skydiving?" she said, positively bursting with excitement. "Yes, yes it is*", I replied. And that's the story of how we became best friends.

*Yes I know it's the Red Hot Chilli Peppers version in the film.

Very interesting news! I was obsessed with the series from MMPR to Turbo (first half). I did watch the Time Force season and that was surprisingly dark and had a good storyline. I recently dipped into the current 20th season to see how they handled the Gokaiger series; it was really not good...

I'm a little worried about the whole superpowers thing; just give me '5 teenagers with attitude' and cameos from the original cast members (sans Trini of course...) thank you very much.

I wonder how (or even if?) they'll integrate Zordon. Imagine the green ranger saga played out across an entire movie, that's bound to be a good one.

He/Him
I am so ready for this. I loved for Power Rangers as a kid. I lost interest after the 'turbo' phase, but it was such a huge part of my childhood, I can't wait to see what they do with this.

Trini was my first TV crush.

The very first Power Rangers movie was purely amazing. I'll give a reboot a chance.

The Pink Ranger was always my favorite. Because Kimberley set my five-year-old heart racing.

Oh my god, I just read an article on this somewhere and contemplated posting about it here but thought it'd be paid dust. I'll admit, I watched Power Rangers for way longer than I had any right to. My hope for this potential franchise is that it's not overtly silly (don't think I didn't note the shade of using that dancing GIF in that article, MTV) and that it follows a real, proper storyline that isn't full of plotholes. Trying to piece together that overall PR timeline is an absolutely maddening affair.

And for what it's worth, I wouldn't read too much into the superpowers thing. There have been quite a few different PR series that integrated superpowers they could use as civilians without any real issue (off the top of my head, I can think of Ninja Storm, Dino Thunder, SPD, and Mystic Force). They were never powers that could rival DC/Marvel superheroes. They were more like powers that could help them in a pinch whenever they were stuck somewhere or battling whatever the foot soldiers were called that season.

Astronema for the villain for don't make it. She has an interesting story and one of the most layered characters, that wouldn't be stretch if they were trying to create a more 'realistic' world.

^ This. I don't know whether they'll start from scratch or play homeage to what people remember with Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd, but Astronema was the best Power Rangers villain of all time.

I've noticed a few people stopped watching when it was Turbo. I detest that whole series, comedy driven with Divatox, what a load of dross it is.

This is very smart of them. The saga has a lot of potential to be a big hit, combining the YA stories with Transformers-like action...

I would love them to recreate the 'In Space' series at some point, but first I want the original story: the Green Ranger (who turns White in the sequel), Rita Repulsa, etc.

Turbo is utter shit, even by late '90s children's television standards (it's where I stopped watching the first time around as well), but Divatox is both 100 percent terrible and 100 percent amazing. Dimitria, however, was awful awful awful. Also, JUSTIN. Fucking hell, that was the single worst decision ever made behind the scenes of the show ever.

For what it's worth, Turbo also had that "I'll toss your salad" moment, so there's that as well.

Oh, everyone hated Justin! I loved how they thought children would relate to that, they didn't, and it seemed to really bother people that he increased in height (but what are you going to do when you need to use sentai footage?).

I will say the cast of change was actually really good. I know people were sad to lose the last remaining link to the originals, but the girls were an improvement on Tanya (Aisha #2) and Kat. I weirdly quite liked Zeo - I know the villains were a bunch of robots but there was something quite sinister and threatening about them.

Zeo is my absolute favorite season. The combination of the team, the Zords and costumes, the whole mythology-meets-technology theme. Even the idea of Rita and Zedd in their camper trolling the Machine Empire was amusing in a children's programming sort of way (obviously I'd want that one left in the past if Zeo ends up getting adapted for the films).

I hope Rita is the villain in the film. Lord Zedd is incredible from a visual point of view, but having a female villain would be a great change of pace. Hopefully they won't chicken out, considering how well known Rita is. Malificent almost seems to be opening the door for it to happen.

Rita would be good if scary, and yeah, Lord Zedd was wonderful from a visual perspective. The issue I have with Rita and Zedd together or Zedd altogether actually, is how comical they made them. They were ridiculous silly in the third season if my memory serves me right. I would love to see Scorpina again, she was wonderful.

Can we all agree that we don't want Bulk and Skull or anything similar to them?

It always bugged me that Astronema/Karone didn't end up becoming the purple ranger after all the teasing they'd done of her in the clothing... And then became the pink ranger later on. I wanted a purple one!

Absolutely NO Bulk and Skull please.
