The Power Rangers Universe

Ok so this was actually really good.

It's exactly what I was expecting and it was great to see Kat not be a damsel in destress for once.

Wow I’m a mess after all the Thuy dedication. That brought me to tears too much. What an absolutely lovely tribute to her.

I really enjoyed that. It was done so well considering the cast missing they had to work around.

I really enjoyed Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always as well.

They were a couple of nitpicks that I had, particularly the way that they delivered the exposition at the start of the episode. I wish that they'd gone with a Star Wars-esque opening crawl as a callback to the 1995 film with it being narrated. Robert Manahan, the voice of Zordon, was my initial pick to narrate the opening crawl, but I just learnt that he passed away back in 2000.

I was initially going to comment that it was a shame that they didn't bring Barbara Goodson back to voice Rita, but I just checked IMDd and saw that they did. I guess that Barbara made the conscious decision not to do the old Rita voice and create something new for Robo Rita.

The updated Zord CGI was actually pretty decent, although not so decent when it came to the villain.

I did find myself getting a little emotional. It absolutely could've been more, but for what it was, it was quite good.

I did appreciate that they didn't depict either of the Pink Rangers in a damsel in distress role, with Kimberly coming to Tommy's rescue, albeit unsuccessfully.

I really enjoyed it too! I thought there were some really nice little nods and Easter eggs. The gay couple was a weirdly nice inclusion, felt very unexpected but sweet that they did it.

Some of it was a bit naff but I felt like it updated the premise and kept the spirit nicely. Minh’s acting was a bit OTT but she was ok. I thought Walter/Zack and David/Billy especially did a really good job.

The ending with Kim singing, the memorial and then the proper credits was really emotional. I think they honoured them in a lovely way.

Adam and Aisha were a bit of a missed opportunity, Adam was always my favourite so that’s a shame. Would have been nice to see Snizzard capture a few different rangers from the other teams too, just to make it feel more expansive.

I have a few questions though - how did they get their powers back in the first place? Why were the original six back together at all? Also, it felt very open ended, as if Zordon might return in Cosmic Fury. I can definitely see Billy popping up in some episodes.

I'm not sure what I expected, or really who this is aimed at, but it was like a time warp... it was just how I remembered the Power Rangers; cheap, horrible acting all round, lousy effects, and a paper thin plot... Whilst I loved Robo-RITA, I couldn't seriously recommend this special to anyone, it was 55 very long minutes.

I'm sure it's a treat for die hard fans but I really don't get who else this would appeal to. Far too old fashioned and tacky for kids, and it's played far too straight to do much for adults who remember it from the first time round. With a bit more of a wink and a nod to how rubbish it all is, it might have had a bit more charm.

I think for a short sub-60 minute special, it was fine. I didn't really know what to expect but I felt the writing was hit and miss. The humour, though, was done just about right and had a touch of nostalgia to the way the original series was written. The pacing did feel off with some points being either too slow or rushed, but I imagine the time limit had something to do with that. Had it been spread across 3 or 4 episodes, I think the final product may have worked better that way.

As a whole, I loved this as a tribute. I feel it works better thinking of this like a closure piece for the fans.

I was obsessed with Power Rangers, aged 7/8 in 1995, perhaps a year earlier it began, but I have pictures of me playing with an impressive collection of Power Rangers toys around that time. I definitely gave up obsessing over it as soon as Victoria, Melanie x2, Geri and Emma arrived, and have thought very little of it since.
I watched the new one on Netflix today - tears slid down my face for the entirety. Nostalgia done so right.

So are they gonna do a Minh figure? I wouldn't mind one!

They've revealed more figures in the 30th anniversary toy line. That Kim portrait is....UGLY. They've never gotten her right

The way the ending bit made me sob so hard.

Ugh, so good. Like obviously it didn’t have great writing or acting but like it was appropriately Power Rangers level.

I will say that I was not prepared for them straight up disintegrating Trini in the first few minutes. I cried at that.

Also,
So Tommy ended up with Kat. My disappointment is immeasurable as I always felt him and Kim worked best.

I guess that Barbara made the conscious decision not to do the old Rita voice and create something new for Robo Rita.
I feel like it was just her being older. It is a pretty taxing voice to do.

Also, the CGI? Reminded me of the first movie in terms of how competent (I.e. not very) it is, dddd.

Maybe it’s the same every year but these homophobic comments on the Power Rangers pride post are really disheartening:

Also, it’s really baffling because Power Rangers have always been super gay? Rainbow colours? All the best villains are badass women? Come off it.
