The Power Rangers Universe

Suppose that makes sense. I was always miffed they never released the Alien Rangers toys properly. I don't think the ranger figures even came out in the UK, though I did manage to get all the Battle Borgs from some weird little toy show in town. I can still remember exploding with excitement at finding them.

I remember the STRUGGLE I had trying to hunt down the Pink and Yellow Time Force figures. Also, it really annoyed me as a kid that they stopped releasing as many villain action figures in the later years, what were we supposed to battle with?

Speaking of Aisha, da fuck was with her turning into a child, teleporting to Africa and then opting to stay there?! Did her parents not wonder where their child got to?

Definitely ready for Alpha5 to become the gay icon that he deserves to be. "Ai ai ai" needs to become a consistent thing.

Prepare for the mother of all reply posts here:

I loved the dodgy editing when there'd be a fight against the Thunder Megazord and randomly the original Megazord would appear for a split second. I never really took any notice of it, for some reason.m

I can't say I've ever tried to look for those frames of film where the original Megazord is still in the footage, but I always found it so odd that they paid for the extra Zyu2 footage (the fight scenes using Zyuranger costumes that the MMPR producers paid for the Japanese production company to produce long after Zyuranger had completed its run in Japan to use in episodes of MMPR at the end of season 1 and the part of season 2, for those who don't know what I'm referencing) utilizing the original Megazord, only to splice in footage of the fucking Thunder Megazord in some of it. They should've just waited until later to introduce the Thunder Megazord. It's not as if the kids watching would've cared.

The one thing I never understood about the Alien Rangers is why they were used at all. Was it some contractual thing, to give the actors time off or something? It's such a bizarre move to get a new cast for the last ten episodes of a series.

From what I recall, the Alien Ranger arc was purely there to give some much needed time off to the main actors (considering that there had already been 145 episodes and a feature film filmed over a period of 2+ years, which is nuts when you think about it). Not quite sure why David Yost was exempt from some of this, but it likely came down to him and/or the producers determining before this that his role would be diminished in Zeo, so he didn't need as big of a break.

I remember the STRUGGLE I had trying to hunt down the Pink and Yellow Time Force figures.

If you don't get those females right when the new line comes out, it's kind of scary how scarce the females can get sometimes. And I totally don't speak from experience when I say that, haha.

Do we know anything about her exit from the show behind the scenes? That's something I've always wanted to know about. There is a fan theory that Master Vile's spell didn't actually turn back time, but made it appear that it was the past (so time was still passing and it was still 1995, even though everyone was under the spell that made them appear and think as if they were in the past). When Aisha decided to stay in Africa and the spell was broken, Aisha's family was transported to Africa and it was as if they had always lived there. On a similar line of speculation, the other rangers traveled into the actual past for their Zeo quests, but Aisha only traveled into the very recent past, hence Tanya not aging once the spell was broken because she came from a point in the recent past where the spell had not yet taken place. That said, the entire plot of that miniseries is extremely convoluted and ripe with plotholes, so good luck trying to come up with any sort of reasoning that properly explains it away. If this movie franchise gets to that point in the series, hopefully they completely rewrite that shitstorm of a story.

PS. Can you all tell I used to post at Rangerboard back in the day?

Jeffo, that post is incredible.

Didn't Tanya age up with the rest of them though?

Not that Wikipedia is trustworthy but:

Ashley's first acting job was as Aisha Campbell, the second Yellow Ranger in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, replacing Thuy Trang (Trini Kwan). Staying on for two years, Ashley left the show in 1995. She was replaced by Nakia Burrise (Tanya) for Power Rangers: Zeo.[citation needed] Her last Power Rangers appearance was in the finale for the third season of the series. Ashley has said that her decision to leave the series was because of the demanding hours.[citation needed] She also reveals that she was to be given an exiting story arc, just as Amy Jo Johnson was, but instead, following time off while her character was reduced to a child for some time in the third season, she would find that she was not asked to return to the set, the official reason given was that her character's recovery would not require her to appear on screen.[citation needed]

Wasn't Tanya (love her originally being called Kenya) a child in Africa who took Aisha's place and then became a teenager? I know it's a kids show, but they never explored her adapting to aging like that. She had a boyfriend and everything!

OK, that one must be my bad then. I'll admit, it's been forever since I've watched anything from back then. What's weird is that when writing that post, I double-checked the Alien Ranger episodes on IMDB to make sure that there wasn't an actress listed as "Young Tanya" and there wasn't, only Nakia Burrise listed for Hogday Afternoon, Pt. 2. Way to fail me, Internet! Haha.

For whatever it's worth, while I liked Aisha, I much preferred Tanya. I just wish she had a better introduction.

It was a fucking bizarre plot, wasn't it?

They were all sent into the past, yeah? And like you say, Jeffo, Aisha was only sent into the recent past, so technically, when she met Child!Tanya, and Tanya came back with the crystal - there already existed a Teenage!Tanya - so Aisha changed the past, meaning she grew up in Africa... and Tanya (and family) grew up in Angel Grove? So she never was a child in a teenage body but rather a fully grown teenager that they just so happened to meet as a child?

HOW WERE CHILDREN MEANT TO UNDERSTAND THIS?

It really makes you wonder the sorts of discussions that went on in the writer's room at the time, no? I mean, sure, you can get away with a certain level of nonsense because the plot is not the first thing the kids watching at home will care about, but that story arc was such an extreme level of confusion and convolution that it really boggles the mind as to how it ever came to fruition. Especially considering the fact that when it came to plotting season 3, they really made a concentrated effort to plot more arcs and introduce certain ideas ahead of time, so that when it became the center of a story arc later on, it didn't just come out of the blue.

What I wouldn't give to have a peak at the MMPR show bible.

Yes! It's utterly bizarre. I mean, I totally appreciate the concentrated effort they were putting in to creating proper stories and arcs - the very fact that Kimberly got a departure arc is pretty much unheard of for kids' TV, but... the whole story just doesn't even make sense. I can even see what the writers even pitched!

"Ok, guys! So we're going to hire five kid actors, and de-age our cast so that they're all children because the villains will reverse time and then these alien rangers that we've got zero investment in will fight the bad guys, while the kids be kids. Then we'll have them go on quests to different countries in different points in time to find these crystals that will turn them all back into teenagers. But we're also going to leave Aisha in 80s Africa and bring a young African girl to Angel Grove and say that they've changed history by doing so. Except that it's only Aisha's family history has changed but Tanya's remains the same, except she suddenly appears in America."

I mean, what?

It sounds like something that was pitched one way but became something else by the time it hit screens. I wouldn't be surprised if there was once an idea to perhaps even begin the yearly cycle and change of casts even back then, but they changed their minds.

I watched the first episode of Turbo last night as I never actually saw it as a kid. I remember just catching the second episode as it started, and having an absolute meltdown at missing an episode. Like, I wrote a letter to ITV complaining at their lack of advertising and everything.

Why were Bulk and Skull made into monkeys?! I also enjoyed the "Oh this series is about cars, it just so happens Tommy is a world class racing driver".

Are the MMPR 1-3 DVDs cheap anywhere online? I am not paying that ridiculous price on Amazon...

Me too. I'm impressed we survived.

I liked it there, it was a decent enough forum. I just began growing out of my renewed interest in the show sometime around Mystic Force, so I had no real reason to continue posting there regularly.

Wasn't Tanya an orphan or something? To be honest, I've always wondered how they managed to secure her documents to attend school is Angel Grove and everything. And in regards to Aisha, if she did change history and her family had lived there for the last so many years, does that negate her history as a Power Ranger then? Does she have any recollection of her time spent as a Power Ranger? I mean, I guess she and the other rangers still have those memories, but it just seems weird to have a new timeline that reflects that Aisha was in Africa instead of California the entire time. Even thinking of it makes my head hurt.

I remember watching the first episode of Turbo but not having seen the Turbo movie and wondering what the fuck had happened.

And let's also not forget how they made Tommy a doctor of paleontology in Dino Thunder. Tommy is just a man of diverse interests, clearly.

Prepare to be even more confused...

It was eventually revealed that her real parents had been African American explorers, who had left her in Africa while they went searching for the "Lost Tiki of Auric" on the fabled Mysterio Island. After receiving a letter from her old tribe and Aisha, she managed to find and rescue them. She learned that the "Lost Tiki" was in fact the form of the ancient hero, Auric the Conqueror, whose care she placed in the hands of Jason Lee Scott, who was serving as the Gold Zeo Ranger at the time.

Sooooooooooo, Aisha (and the rangers) all have memories of her time as a ranger, even though technically, it now never happened as she changed history and has now been in Africa since a young child. Tanya's parents obviously dumped her in Africa prior to the point from where Aisha changed history so that Tanya's parentage/reason for being in Africa remained constant.

That would make some sort of sense until you realise that Tanya would have fucking popped out of existence in Africa in the late 80s and would presumably have been in Angel Grove (living with Kat, who wasn't even from there?!) and grew from child to teenager in America.

They were all high. It's the only explanation.

Oh wow! I used to post on Rangercentral back in the day too! I used to talk to this guy loads that had an obsession with Patricia Ja Lee. I also think the admin or one of the moderators was obsessed with Britney Spears too?

I also never watched the Turbo film and went straight into it. I still find it hilarious they did a feature not related to the timeline and then had Turbo related to the timeline. I'd love to know the thought process of that pig villain Mordant? Did they feel Squatt, Bamboo and Finster were too much so rolled them all into one?

It seems they married Rita and Zedd because of complaints over how scary Zedd was. He was amazing by himself originally, thank you very much middle America. I've seen some of the footage of Rita as Bandora from Zyuranger before, but rewatching some of it over the weekend was marvellous - her song is so camp!
