See that the first of the 8 bonus tracks for the digital only 2022 30th anniversary edition of Funky Divas, was uploaded on digital/streaming yesterday: Not a bad mix either personally. The other bonus tracks are as follows: 14 Free Your Mind (Theo's Rec And Wreck Mix) [2022 Remaster] 15 Free Your Mind (Tommy's Spoiled Brat Mix) [2022 Remaster] 16 Free Your Mind (James' Club Mix) [2022 Remaster] 17 Give It Up, Turn It Loose (Kevin's Extended R&B Mix) [2022 Remaster] 18 Give It Up, Turn It Loose ("Welcome To The Ghetto" Hip Hop Mix) [2022 Remaster] 19 Give It Up, Turn It Loose (Kevin's Extended Jazz Mix) [2022 Remaster] 20 Give It Up, Turn It Loose (Somethin' For The People Remix) [2022 Remaster]
I fell down a Richard Darbyshire rabbit-hole (like you do) after I read about Japan's upcoming reissue, and I came away wishing he'd get a Cherry Pop release. I really liked his song with Tina Arena. I'm tempted to track down the CD singles but I'm bummed This I Swear only has the Morales/Knuckles radio mix. Was there a longer mix that ever made it off of vinyl?
This drives me crazy, especially since digital releases don't have the same time limitations as physical formats. 'Funky Divas' deserves so much better. 8 bonus tracks is practically nothing. I made my own Ultimate Edition a while back using (I believe) everything from this era that was made available on CD...that's 71 tracks! Amazing. Adding only eight bonus tracks is really insulting considering the number of singles released and the amount of mixes.
I’d snap this up in a heartbeat. En Vogue deserves better, truly. Especially since their debut raised the bar for what music lovers should expect from girl groups, and their follow up created the definitive new rock/hip hop/pop template for girl groups. Legends.
Okay, wig. This is really what the release should’ve looked like! I don’t get why labels bother releasing such piss-poor editions instead.
Oh, but isn’t Rhino a Warner company just like the original release’s label eastwest is? Ugh, label politics are confusing.
It's a mess, isn't it. Maybe the Elektra division has stayed with Warners. Or maybe the whole lot of WB imprints are covered by EMI but they don't bother saying. Actually I don't recall Rhino being "Rhino Entertainment Company" - used to be plain old Rhino Records. So there's been some fiddling around going on!
The digital-only album boxsets for Chic and Laura Branigan bore the Rhino credit, but that was in 2020 (maybe even 2019, I lose track of the time now) and Warners had a bit of a shake-up last year (new logo, a split with the audio and visual divisions or something, plus EMI were involved). It might be that Warners now own EMI, and I've got it completely arse-about-face.
Universal bought EMI in 2012, but EMI Classics is part of Warner, so yeah it's all bit confusing. Rhino is still releasing: https://www.discogs.com/label/33244-Rhino-Records-2?sort=year&sort_order=desc It also has an active YouTube channel
EMI is owned by Universal now and it's just one of their labels these days. Warner Music owns Parlophone which might be what you are thinking of? Rhino is Warner's re-issue and catalogue division like Legacy is for Sony.
So I've finally played all the ones I snagged. Seven the Hard Way (this is my favorite of the lot. I only knew the singles but this is a great little album!), True Love, Get Nervous, and Tropico are all fairly quiet and sound like most pre 90's CD's. Oddly, Precious Time sounds completely remastered and is as loud as the modern CD's I played in succession. I forgot to get Wide Awake in Dreamland with my order but given the mastering is what it is for the majority of the others, I'm not too upset.
