The first two Whitney Houston albums are now out to pre order on standard and colour vinyls for 2023:
Good news for me as I never got around to replacing my '90s era pressing with the previous reissue. Question though, for anyone who may know. A long time ago, I remember reading about an original album version of I Ran that was replaced when the album got pressed on CD. Apparently this original version started "with a bang" instead of starting with the minute-ish long intro and ended abruptly instead of with a fade. Is this true? Has this version ever showed up on anything in recent memory? The source was an Amazon review from 2005 and I've quoted the appropriate section below:
Released digitally this Friday Madonna The Gambler including the dance mix which will be it's first time on digital.
They both were on Townsend Music. I say were, as the blue edition for Whitney, has already sold out! Whitney Houston still available though.
One of the better things about these yearbooks is they are compiled by someone who actually cares what the sequencing sounds like.
Agreed, though I'd have liked a little more attention to the very many tracks that were actual hits in 1985, as I can't imagine Sandra's #91 smash, Rick Springfield's #80 success being in many people's '85 yearbook and Gloria's #79 'hit' may have since become Estefan cannon, but it's nothing I associate with that era particularly. I didn't for one minute think we'd get Madonna, Prince, Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Pet Shop Boys etc, but surely Jaki Graham, Amazulu, Mai Tai, Opus, Denise LaSalle, Sophia George, The Rah Band, The Communards, Waterboys, heck even Russ Abbott and Rebecca Storm were all in easy reach and more deserving of a place? As always, a case of 'can't have everything' and in fairness, there is at least something for everyone etc. That said, if there is anywhere I'll stumble across folk who've been waiting 37 years for Rick to take his 'rightful' place on a Now 1985 comp, its in these here forums! It'll be nice to get the underrated Wrap Her Up 7'' in better quality as the one on High Life is a bit 'muggy.' And on a related note, this very week in 1985, our hit parade looked like... 20 Jaki Graham & David Grant - Mated 19 Starship - We Built This City 18 Eurythmics & Aretha Franklin - Sisters Are Doin' It For Themselves 17 Paul McCartney - Spies Like Us 16 Dionne Warwick, Gladys Knight, Elton John & Stevie Wonder - That's What Friends Are For 15 Queen - One Vision 14 A-Ha - Take On Me 13 Go West - Don't Look Down: The Sequel 12 Madonna - Dress You Up 11 Elton John - Nikita 10 Jennifer Rush - The Power Of Love 09 Lionel Richie - Say You, Say Me 08 Talking Heads - The Road To Nowhere 07 Doug E Fresh - The Show 06 UB40 - Don't Break My Heart 05 Phil Collins & Marilyn Martin - Separate Lives 04 Feargal Sharkey - A Good Heart 03 Dee C Lee - See The Day 02 Whitney Houston - Saving All My Love For You 01 Wham! - I'm Your Man Wall to wall to wall to wall classics* - it really doesn't get much better than that! Ah, the good old days! * and Paul McCartney
Isn't the NOW brand now owned by Sony? That might explain the flop choices. Taking the easy route with in-house licensing/promo, hoping not everyone is as well-informed (or old enough!) to know which tracks weren't anywhere near the chart pulse in 85.
We wuz bonkers not to chart A Love Bizarre, P:Machinery, Maria Magdalena etc so blooming good choices. This series is coming out too fast though, i kinda think the incessant money grab by Now is avaricious.
It's called NOW 85 Extra as in 'it's 1985 and you have a german penpal, Gretel who sent you a tape with Maria Magdalena' extra.
