The Reissue Thread!

(I honestly like cassettes from the mid/late-80s to the mid-90s...some beautiful designs and the Warners ones usually sounded great).

I'm with you, Eric. I like cassettes because they're actually, er, compact. I still feel engaged with the music (I like flipping over the cassette on the walkman) and many cassettes sound great.

My only issue is the walkmans I find only play for a short period of time and then they malfunction and there are not many resources to fix them.

I agree about the Warner cassettes sounding great. The Apollonia 6 cassette I found recently sounds great, as do some of the George Benson cassettes I own, and Madonna.

Record Snore Day vinyl(yawn),
but expanded CD editions in May!

"Celebrating the 45th anniversaries of ‘No.1 In Heaven’ and the Sparks-written-and-produced lost gem ‘Is There More To Life Than Dancing’ by Noël with a double colored vinyl release!
Released worldwide on April 20 through Lil’ Beethoven Records, in the US this special double LP release will be exclusively available in independent record stores for Record Store Day 2024. Both albums will also be released worldwide on CD, with an abundance of bonus tracks, on May 17"

Yes, Madonna's always sounded very good I agree, I think I only kept You Can Dance out of mine because of the mighty dubs!

I’ve never owned a MiniDisc player, but if companies are going to release music in old, gimmick formats that’s the poison I’d pick. At least they’re digital.

What about the DoA boxset ?
Amazon and Discogs reviews doesn't sound so great...

Info about track sources:

7-06, 8-07, 11-02, 14-04, 15-07, 15-09, 15-12 and 22-09 are all lossy (some ripped directly from YouTube) and vinyl sourced - they're from the same sources as the 'Sophisticated Boom Box MMXVI'.
- 15-07 ('Baby Don't Say Goodbye (The Powerful Club Twelve)') has heavy noise reduction applied in the intro.
- 22-09 ('You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) (Blue Sky Mix)') plays too fast (pitch being affected) and skips in the intro.

12-06 and 12-07 are vinyl sourced - they're from the same sources as the Let Them Drag My Soul Away set.

1-05 and 2-02 have been taken directly from the 2007 Cherry Pop 'Sophisticated Boom Boom' CD reissue. Each track (more noticeably on 'Selfish Side') has the ending of their respective preceding tracks from that release erroneously mixed into their intros.

22-04 skips in the second verse - this is from the same source as the 'Sophisticated Boom Box MMXVI'. Like that set, this mix should be the the the full 5:00 version, but it's the 4:36 edit that appeared on the US CD release of 'Nukleopatra'. (Note: that CD does not have the skip.)

When comparing the mastering of this set to the original CD (where applicable) releases the tracks appeared on, the dynamic range on the originals is superior and hasn't been affected by brickwalling / excessive loudness - which this release has.

Great idea for a box set and even has a few tracks not included in previous Dead or Alive box sets.

Sadly all 27 CD are ruined by unnecessary compression during mastering, which makes them uncomfortable to listen to.

Hopefully one day I will get the chance to buy sets like this again once the standard of mastering returns to the music industry. Most CDs after 1992 seem to suffer from similar poor sound, but there are a few exceptions.

I have many of the original records, but not everything presented here.
The box and individual sleeves are great and there is an informative booklet. If only similar care had been given to the most important thing - the sound. The dynamic range sounds well below 9 and really anything less than 11 is unacceptable when some of the original releases had a dynamic range of 14 or more.

Good grief! Can we not just have one Dead Or Alive product done properly? This even had an 'audio sense-check' person going by the sleeve notes (not a role I'm familiar with, but it would at least suggest an intent to get it right).

Much like 'Boom Box,' and given how much this cost, I hope they issue replacement discs if indeed there are glitches and audio sourced from YouTube etc, and I'll keep holding on to a hope that one day a Dead Or Alive product is given the love and care that it deserves!

On a positive note, the mini replica sleeves look great. I'm a bit sad that my very favourite Dead Or Alive sleeve (the stunning 7'' of Hooked On Love) has been replaced with the inferior 7'' remix cover, but overall the sleeves really showcase how brilliant Dead Or Alive's artwork was (thanks in no small part to Pete's magnificent image of course).
