#41: SOME OTHER SUMMER

I say:
3.5 / 10

The second of three singles from Good Karma - the other two of which are still in - and my second lowest score of the lot. I love that title but I just cannot get into this at all and can't be arsed to go back and listen to it again. And I'm tired.

Seems like y'all weren't keen on the vocals either...

You say:

@straw82 (7) Never quite hits the mark, but the fan-made video really enhanced it

@Ray (6.5) This would have been so much better if Per’s vocals were not recorded in a barrel, then autotuned to death. Why? Just why?

@Peer_Gynt10 (6) it’s good, but would be even better if Marie’s vocals were more pronounced

@DominoDancing (5.5) Ugh, the vocals. This wouldn't have been a super inspired song either way, but the vocal production really ruins it.

10 songs down, tracks from their earlier work are going sooooon...

Good Karma is actually my favourite of their many comeback albums since 1999, but I agree that the vocal production is, well, not always the best.
Totally agree this is their best comeback since Have A Nice Day, most of the tracks on Good Karma could've been singles in my opinion, thus my high rate. Absolutely devastated that Good Karma was never released as a single though...

Well, several songs I gave a 5 to just went out in quick succession, and I can't say I'm sad about any of them. I still have another 5 and a few lower scores hanging around, though, and I'm hoping to see those tossed out soon. Then the rest of the rate will be firmly on the "good" side of my scoring range and I can start getting mad about it being more invested.

On a side note I have just given The World According to Gessle (hate the title) a spin and been suprised by what a good album it is. I much prefer Marie singing to Per in Roxette but when it comes to their solo albums I would rather listen to his.
Some other summer is a great song and I thought Why don't you bring me flowers would be out before this one.

My comments thus far might suggest I am not in camp Per, but in the earlier days of Roxette I tended to prefer his tracks to Marie's. Funny how it goes. Kix from his World According To Gessle was a smash on my charts in '97.

#40: A THING ABOUT YOU

Average:
6.410
Highest: 9.5 (@Peer_Gynt10)
Lowest: 4 (@Alenko)

Chartage:
#6 (Taiwan); ##15 (Spain); #18 (Brazil); #23 (Spain); #37 (Germany); #39 (Austria); #39 (Belgique); #77 (UK); #88 (Netherlands)

I say:
4.5

The demo that became the lead single from Roxette's 110th compilation release, The Ballad Hits, which was released around Valentine's Day 2003 with an accompanying TV commercial that saw it peak at an impressive #11 in the UK album charts. Said advert focused on the presence of Listen to Your Heart, It Must Have Been Love, Fading Like a Flower, and Almost Unreal as opposed to "...and their brand new smash A Thing About You!" because by then, it had already been a gone at the rather lowly #77.

Per dons the lead again - possibly as this was recorded not so long after Marie's brain tumor was discovered - and the result is a slightly ethereal ballad, albeit one that likely wouldn't have achieved more than B-side status pre-Don't Bore Us. The video sees a couple missing each other, while the band members appear to sing little pieces - Marie looking amazing, Per with another choice barnet.

You say:

@Peer_Gynt10 (9.5) This was such a relief after two horribly overproduced albums; too bad they didn’t get a chance to explore a more down-to-earth and acoustic approach. The way their voices melt into each other is one of the many reasons I love this band so much. A classic, even if it didn’t set the charts on fire.

@straw82 (8) A really strong Per ballad that still sounds quite modern today. Made the whole Ballad Hits thing worth it

@DominoDancing (4.5) A mushy post-Crash! Boom! Bang! Roxette ballad. With lead vocals by Per. Not my thing.

Ahhh A thing about you is beautiful, after the bland Room Service album this song sounded classic Roxette and a lot more polished. I still prefer Breathe over it from the Ballad hits though.

Awww, Thing About You exits too soon! I always liked it, thought I'd scored it an 8 but in fact 'twas a 9. Wow.

It probably is a little "second tier" Roxette but it's very affecting and pretty and the tuneage is there.

Ah, there goes that last 5. Still stuck with those 4s and the big low, the 3.

A Thing About You hasn't stuck in my mind much, so no surprise I didn't score it too highly, but I remember that I was going to give it a point or two more but I found it too boring. The verses are okay, if a little basic, but the chorus is quite bland and uninspired.

The first single from 2011's Charm School, a project that saw the band trying to recreate 'the classic Roxette sound, without repeating ourselves'. This cute but slight release is driven by a fun riff and the title alludes a quote by Marilyn Monroe.

Though Per and Marie wished not to repeat themselves, I feel like I am when it comes to assessing this - possibly a little too harshly (it's more of a 6) - as fun but forgettable, a theme which has reigned heavily over most of the eliminations so far. But it gave them a moderately sized hit in several regions so at least there's that.

You say:

@straw82 (9) I was initially disappointed when I first heard it, but it has grown on me. In 2015 I travelled to Germany to see a few Roxette concerts and the reaction to this was really surprising…it had been a hit in Germany and the fans there loved it. Gave me new-found respect for the song

@Ray (7.5) Yeah give me more dirty puns Per!

@Peer_Gynt10 (7) great comeback single

@DominoDancing (6.5) Fine, but the production ruins it. Sounds much too cheap, especially on the chorus with those empty power chords and wimpy synth arpeggios. On paper it's not far removed from the sound of their classic period, but here it sounds like a demo waiting for a proper producer.

@Alenko (5) The chorus is great, shame the verses and guitars are not.

I originally scored that quite a bit lower, but I found on my second listen that it was actually a bit of a bop. Definitely could have stayed longer than some other tracks. I'm not devastated about it though.
