The ROXETTE Rate - WINNER!

I gave this a 6.5, the same as How Do You Do which I think is a bit unfair because I do still listen to How Do You Do from time to time for nostalgia value.

When this comes on my iTunes I tend to skip it, it's not bad, it's just a bit too brash for Roxette. I think Fireworks guitar-pop homage to Joyride does things much better. I do like the voice crack pointed out by @Alenko though.

The Remainers:

The Look
Dressed for Success
Listen to Your Heart
Dangerous
Chances
It Must Have Been Love
Joyride
Fading Like a Flower
Spending My Time
Things Will Never Be the Same
(Do You Get) Excited?
Almost Unreal
Crash! Boom! Bang!

Well done popjustice (and of course Roxette) I say.

How the hell do you whittle that down?! Nearly everything left is 10/10!

I'm very pleased to see Chances, Things Will Never Be The Same and (Do You Get) Excited? still in as these were all new to me thanks to the rate and I am obsessed with each of them.

Top 10 needs to be these:

Crash! Boom! Bang!

...with Dressed and Chances out at #10 and #9.

"You can't call a ballad that!" recalls Per being told when he conceived Crash! Boom! Bang! as a sweeping weepathon for Marie to knock out of the park.

A triumph from the album of the same name, I have the vaguest of vague recollections of the video playing on The Chart Show, with Marie going up an endless spiral staircase while weird shit happens all around and Per crops up with guitar in hand every now and then. It looks a bit ropey now, but in 1994 that was some amazing shit.

The song itself could be accused of being Roxette-by-numbers, albeit with some more orchestration thrown in and a little less oomph than their signature power ballads. Still, the content works nonetheless and it's an awesome single, if not one I kind of have to be in the mood for, hence that half a point dock.

You say:

@DominoDancing (11) A classic. In terms of Roxette I prefer this even over It Must Have Been Love and Spending My Time. Every single element in this song just works, every little instrumental bit is memorable. I still find it absolutely shocking that this was kind of a flop in most countries. Unfortunately, this would also be the last time one of their ballads impressed me that much.

@Sprockrooster (10) Okay, perhaps it is nitpicking for a song I gave a 10, but that title is really implying something else. For someone not knowing this song I expected something punky or even metal-esque (especially after 'Sleeping in My Car') with that title. But something as mellow and beautiful as this is not what I expect. Caught by surprise, but in the end it worked out well.

@Alenko (10) This has always been one of my favorite song of theirs. Love the video too. The song builds and builds. Sad lyrics.

@Ray (9.5) Doesn’t crash, doesn’t boom, doesn’t bang, is fantastic.

@Peer_Gynt10 (9.5) Such an unfortunate title for such an amazingly beautiful song.

@berserkboi (9) Lovely in some aspects, clunky in others.

@straw82 (9) A lovely ballad, I love the way that this slowly builds to its conclusion. Should have been a much bigger hit, the fragility of the first chorus is heartbreaking, gets me every time.

@tylerc904 (6.5) Fireworks and Run To You are leagues ahead of this one, which really isn’t single material in general.

@Rooneyboy (6) Great start but doesn't seem to go anywhere. Good vocals though.
