The Royal Family

Maybe Andrew Pierce?

I used to know a "Queen" who had the same views as Andrew Pierce.
Everyone I knew used to get fed up of him as they (Homo/Straight) found him "difficult"
I didn't - I just liked disagreeing with him in a reasonable way!
The Queen could probably only deal with 1-3 f-words in the castle at one time, let alone a flood of them. She was kind of the Taylor of her time.

I went to Greece to avoid the whole thing.

It was being played on a TV at the bar and there were a total of six people watching.

They get to review all laws before they’re passed and request exemptions. The queen got the royal household exempted from equalities legislation so they’re legally allowed to discriminate in employment.

I mean I knew that they got to review all the laws, but I was under the impression they didn't really get involved and just let parliment do the law work. I didn't know that about the queen and that's shocking.

Another question, King Charles doesn't seem popular at all, at least in the UK as I feel like the royal family have always been more popular with foreigners. Was Queen Elizabeth popular when she first came to be queen, or did she earn her popularity as time went by? I know a lot of the posters here dislike the royal family so I doubt the queen is popular with many of you, but from everything I seen after she died, she seemed to die a popular monarch.

I dunno why I know this but I swear the public perception of the queen before Diana died was indifferent/negative. I recall the fact Lizzy didn't meet the public or offer support when the country was cosumed with grief when Diana died was a turning point. The press and public were up in arms about how she was cold and heartless and Tony Blair had to have a word and tell her the public needs her to support them during this time.

I think Diana passing is what made the queen and the rest of the royal family a lot more public facing in the years to come than they had been before. The Diana print if you will!

In my childhood recollection the Queen was seen well up until Diana's death. Not sure if she was particularly loved, but don't remember many taking issue with her or the royal family up til then. Then she and the rest were seen as cold, heartless, etc. when Diana died and they refused to fly down. The conspiracy theory that the Queen or 'the Firm' had had Diana killed - especially tied with the idea of her being pregnant with Dodi's child - is a good indicator of how they were seen at the time. But I think the Queen was consistent, diligent, dutiful, and that won people over as the years passed - then the Queen Mother passed, Will and Harry hit their teens and were good looking for a spell, etc.

Yeah the royals as a whole had an awful 90s, 3/4 of Liz's kids getting divorced, the Windsor castle fire, being shamed into voluntarily paying income tax, Diana and the aftermath.

The golden jubilee in 2002 was very subdued and they didn't want to make a fuss.

I blame Helen Mirren/Peter Morgan/Stephen Frears for Liz's rehabilitation. You can portray Liz's heartlessness at not saying anything as old-fashioned resolve and everyone hated Blair by then so you can see him playing politics out of tragedy.

Then you had the royal wedding and the diamond jubilee and constant propaganda saying she's been there the whole time and support went up.

I think we should abolish the monarchy and also think that Prince Harry seems like a bit of an arsehole (talking about his 'number' in Afghanistan, the Nazi outfit etc.) but I can't help but think good luck to him and Meghan for getting out while they could.

If he wins his current court case and damages the tabloids by revealing phone hacking was more widespread than they've previously admitted? Maybe the Royal Family would have been worth it after all.
