The Sandra 80's/90's Rate: Done, winner crowned!

#35: Love Turns To Pain

Average score: 7.78

This song's first half is great, but I get bored quickly....

@soratami: 9
@Rooneyboy: 9
@Hatbar: 9
@Maki: 8.25
@Remorque: 7.5
@MilesAngel: 7.5
@idratherjack: 7
@WoW73: 6.6
@Epic Chocolat: 6.2

@Maki: "I really like how this one is combining the pop and alt sound, the chorus is surely one of the stronger offerings."

@Rooneyboy: "The best song on the album for me, 'the big boys never cry' almost a duet with her and Andy Jonas, with a slight remix this should have been a single. "

Son Of A Time Machine and Mirrored In Your Eyes are lovely while listening, but not that memorable afterwards.

I enjoy the male vocals on Love Turns To Pain because unlike some tracks on the album, they don't overtake Sandra but compliment her. The song also has some good hooks. I underscored.

@Maki: "I've never heard that type of propulsive vocals from Sandra during the chorus. The song is pretty good but nothing too special. Again, impressive that this is a cover of a 60s song, because I'd never guess that."

@Rooneyboy: "The lead single from Fading Shades (her least successful album but one I still have a fondness for) this only entered the NZ top 40 and was the start of Sandra's demise as the 'Pop Queen of Europe' . It's a decent cover but a little too mature for me. I would have lead with Won't Run Away personally."

#30: (Life May Be) A Big Insanity

Average score: 7.94

Another single leaving us; the last song to score under 8!

@Remorque: 10

@Maki: 8.5
@idratherjack: 8

@Maki: "Nice new jack swing influence here, the song really bops. I wish the verses were stronger though."

@Rooneyboy: "She never looked more beautiful than in the video for this, more empowered and confident, like a true pop star! I like it's quirkiness and there were some great mixes on the CD single. It was probably before its time but I loved it then and still do now."

Nights In White Satin is a great cover. The video is a work of art and Sandra's vocals on the chorus are incredible.

(Life May Be) A Big Insanity is Sandra for the 90s - love her styling in the video and the New Jack Swing influence. It sounds like it could be a Paula Abdul single (this is a massive compliment!)

"Two Lovers Tonight" further grew on me, that chorus is so good. Same goes for "Lovelight in Your Eyes", both are underrated.
Considering how the 90s ballads have been treated, "Nights in White Satin" ended up higher than it should.
"(Life May Be) A Big Insanity" still bops and I expected it would do better.

And now that we reached top 30, let me say that "Hi! Hi! Hi!" has absolutely no business being here. Just because it was a single doesn't mean it's good.

Ooooh, there's me thinking you meant Loreen ..
Hi! Hi! Hi! is great, I won't have the slander.

Two Lovers Tonight has great synths and a fantastic chorus, but it's my #6 of the album, which just shows how strong 'Mirrors' is.

Nights In White Satin is a good cover of a classic 60's track that I've always found middling. I enjoy this but wouldn't seek it out.

I appreciate Sandra doing something a bit different, for her, in the verses of Life May Be (A Big Insanity), but it's the chorus where it really soars. It is #6 on my 'Paintings In Yellow' ranking.

I love the vocal intonations and inflections that Sandra uses in Lovelight In Your Eyes, and the ethereal backing vocals. It's a great mid-tempo track. The song is in my Top 3 for 'Paintings In Yellow,' hence the 10.

#29: La Vista De Luna

Average score: 8.02

This is quite a lovely track - esp. for the current Summery evenings

@Maki: "Based on its title, I expected this to be her "La Isla Bonita" for some reason. Obviously not as amazing as that masterpiece but I'm sure enjoying it."

@Rooneyboy: "Another fab song from the album, it's kind of dreamy and makes you feel relaxed. I always imagine listening to this on a warm evening with the sun coming down."

Both of these deserved better.
I see "La vista de luna" was released as a promo single but I think it deserved a proper release. "No Taboo" is also among the highlights of its parent album, the production is very cool. Interestingly, it sounds like it was inspired by "Erotica" album, even though Sandra's album came out before it.

I gave No Taboo 7.4 but not sure why it's that low. It has great piano and there is a propulsion to the production that feels very Sandra, unlike some songs on Fading Shades. Saying that the two remaining songs from Close To Seven album are correct.

The word that comes to mind listening to La Vista De Luna is 'refreshing.' It gives me the feeling of being on a Mediterranean island on a balmy summer evening. 9.

@Maki: "Loving the atmospheric vibes in the production, however the song leaves a bit more to be desired as a whole. "

@Rooneyboy: "Dedicated to her brother Gaston who sadly died in 1995, this is a beautiful song. You can feel the emotion in her voice, especially when she sings 'if you can hear me, I need you right now' it's always been a favourite of mine.  "
