Suddenly things are going better for you then (and @Phonetics Girl) and worse for me.

Hazey Says | This is the best song out of the three new ones on the Greatest Hits album, no it's true! The little underdog that could against the big single and rumored follow up. The melodies just seem a tad more interesting on this. The pre-choruses are sublime, whoever is singing them and the nii-iii-iiight hooks never leave you! (10)

In the last rate this was the #3 out of 3 songs from Finest Selection. There were actually a few voters that thought it should’ve been the lead single instead of What Are You Waiting For? Or at least released after it. Those people argued it was an interesting sound and so different from anything else they’ve done and some said the other two songs were too generic in comparison. However, other people considered this to be boring and clearly the worst new song from the Greatest Hits album. Frankie and Una with her ad-libs were the two that got the most shoutouts in the commentary.

Commentary

@Sally_Harper (10) - I wish they’d done more songs like this, it’s just stunning. The piano! The hoo-hooing! The lyrics! The “I never believed…” parts! Frankie and Una’s “do you ever think” section! The relatability! Una’s adlibs at the end! I lost my MIND the first time I heard this and I don’t know if I ever truly got it back.

@daninternational (10) - Definitely feels more modern than a lot of their stuff, a glow up.

@louciano (10) - The intro sounds really familiar, but I can't put a finger on it. This song is just huge and should have been a single, even if it is arguably a product of its time. Definitely fits perfectly on a greatest hits.

@saviodxl (9) - Wasted chance of filming a video in the desert!

@Attis (9) - Their OneRepublic serve, but make it good.

@Scaper (8.5) - Where was the John Newman lawsuit?

@Phonetics Girl (7.5) - Cute they tried to be Foxes but there's a mountainous quality gap in here!

I love the idea of a desert-themed video and agree with @saviodxl on it being a missed opportunity. Foxes is also a good call from @Phonetics Girl, very much an episode of All I Need adventure-time, which probably explains why I love it so much. There's just an added element of maturity in this song, definitely more-so than the other two tracks on the release, as well as a distinct 'luxurious' quality to it. When @Sally_Harper mentioned the piano in her commentary, I had kind of an immediate epiphany of sorts: This is their play at Delta Goodrem up-tempos from the Child of the Universe/Wings of the Wild eras. That's my take on it anyway.

We've got a Fruna song on our hands, as @Sally_Harper's comment here just added to their count from 2015, while everyone else only has one compliment to their name.

As others have said, Walking Through The Desert is the best of the Finest Selection tracks, and is one of
my biggest rate discoveries. Lyrically it's one of their most intriguing songs, delving into themes of emotional alienation, almost like a 'dark night of the soul' moment. 10.

Oh yeah and tomorrow's #22 is yet another of my top Sats favorites as the run up to the Top 20 continues to be a hit parade of "aww we almost made it" stories. It's from either Chasing Lights or Wordshaker.
It's one of these (only one of which deserves it).

If This Is Love, Forever Is Over, Lose Control

I hate how perceptive these predictions are.

However, the song that got the most hate in 2015 for a song not named Gentleman and yet still managed a #36 ranking, proved itself as the Saturdays staple it is by ascending to new heights.

Hazey Says | Oh gosh, I loved getting into battles galore back in 2015. There were so many people who LOATHE this song, including one of my old besties who is no longer here (@GhettoPrincess). They’d be begging for it to leave from day one, but it held on for a great placement at #36, stamping its title as an underrated fan favorite. I don't even understand the criticism about this particular song being so juvenile lyrically – is it so much more than a lot of their other songs? Huh? The beat still slices and dices everything in its path and Vanessa still slays the living fuck out of everything and Una is still on the cover of every fashion magazine I want to see. Mollie’s “Whooooo’s that boy!?!” -- whew my head starts spinning! (10+)

After being on Wordshaker the song also appeared on the expanded version of Headlines! It also was released on the St. Trinian’s II soundtrack and because of that is the band's second highest selling album track.

One of the most divisive songs in the 2015 rate with several rather vocals haters calling for it when we were eliminating songs in the 60s, yet it lasted until #36 on the back of nine 10s (hate that we only have 6 this time!). @Vixen definitely being the loudest with the commentary simply saying “Not today Satan, not today.”

Those who hate the song will quickly cite the “kidz bop” style of it and drag the lyrics to hell, while those who love it will do it unashamedly, but a few will admit it’s a guilty pleasure. The verses, pre-chorus, and chorus are all mentioned as ‘perfect pop’ by more than one commentator, so who’s wrong? In other words, it’s kind of an undeniable bop.

Commentary

@Hazey's Mom (10) - It's all about the beat for this one, what a bop!

@daninternational (9) - Love how the ooh oohs lad the chorus for a change, and the Womanizer vibes.

@saviodxl (8.7) - Fan favorite, hidden gem, cute production, bubblegum pop.

@Ezz (8.5) - Love how fun and eclectic this end of the album is.

@louciano (8.5) - Very fun. This is a bit of a predecessor to how On Your Radar, like a foreshadowing of what was to come.

@Sally_Harper (8) - “I should be the face of every fashion magazine”. A bop. Vanessa’s “YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH” is such a moment, and the way Una sings “the in clique” with such disgust is so funny. I will say I’ve never really got what the verses have to do with the chorus, lyrically, but it doesn’t really matter.

@Scaper (8) - So cheesy and yet I will forever stan. Very much of that Ugly Betty/Glee era.

@Attis (7.5) - The kind of faceless bop that I enjoy.

@Phonetics Girl (6.5) - Sad to say but this is a bit of a racket that I tolerated highly in the past but not in 2022, oh no.

After seeing the list of artists @Phonetics Girl listed in the Rates Queue thread, you'd quickly realize the version of her that liked this song and today's edition aren't listening to the same playlists dd. I have to wonder what the fate of Lose Control would be if more of the haters from the last rate had voted, but then you have to wonder how of those people are still even active on the forum. Sometimes I do understand what @Sally_Harper is saying as far as the lyrics being all over the place, but in general I always got the perception that the song is about a girl feeling like an underdog or overlooked by guys and getting the courage to go for what they want -- a feeling that may come off a 'losing control' when in reality they're just expressing a new-found confidence in spades.

There is no denying it with their 4 shoutouts and their countless contributions to the song, that the two lead-vocalists on Lose Control are our queens today.

The next song tomorrow at #21, just missing the Top 20, is also from the first half of their discography (pre-On Your Radar) and is not one of the other two songs @MilesAngel hinted at (If This Is Love or Forever Is Over) -- yaas to all the other Forever Is Over stans, we did it, she's a Top 20 girl now!

Is Lose Control cheesy, juvenile, silly, a racket? Yes. Does it bop? Absolutely. The sweeping ‘ooh, ooh’s’ are the best bit along with Vanessa’s belting heading into the last chorus. That has to be the most aggressive ad-lib in their entire discography? I don’t know how anyone who enjoy’s girl bands doesn’t even slightly love this song, as chaotic as it is.

If This Is Love is also a Top 20 girl, after being cruelly ejected at this point last time!

Playing post-holiday catch-up and my biggest takeaway is there's a major correlation between people saying Disney or Kidz Bop and me losing high scores way earlier than I'd like to... no surprises there hehe.

Welcome back, I think you'll be okay with this one missing the Top 20.

Oooh thankful Lose Control did not beat my 11 but I have a dark hunch it's one of my 10s that's unfairly missing out on a Top 20 placing. At least my rate villain era's got to be right around the corner, got to be got to be!

Villain arc will have to wait, but I think you'd pick this over some others.

My villain moment may be happening though dd.

Hazey Says | This was always a pretty easy skip on the album. I thought time would be kind since my taste has improved over the years, believe it or not, but no this is about as boring and hookless as it gets. The verses chug along like they’re stuck in molasses and the chorus is literally nothingness. I never signed up to be a Saturdays fan for this. (3)

It was performed on the Work Tour as a teaser for the upcoming album. A ‘wordshaker’ is apparently defined as someone who twists the truth but it’s not in any dictionary. As we all know that was part of the band's strategy at the time, to make any Google search only provide results of the group's album.

Most of the love for the song was about how catchy the chorus and production are and how, along with how iconic the title-word is, could’ve made into an anthem had it become a single. But there were a few that disagreed about the chorus, saying it was a letdown. It also got a few comparisons to the song Work, being called a sister song to it and a nice throwback.

Commentary

@saviodxl (10) - Title track that should've been a single. In a parallel reality this was the lead single instead of Forever Is Over.

@Ezz (9.5) - Would have been so intriguing to have this as a single.

@Phonetics Girl (8.5) - Very nice, above average bop that I feel is kinda forgotten.

@Sally_Harper (8) - This suffers a little from the old “it sounded better in the live performances” phenomenon, but it’s still pretty great, and I love the imagery of “velvet linings on your language”. I wonder if “wordshaker” ever caught on with anyone, like are there couples out there who would accuse each other of being “such a wordshaker” in arguments? And I have never been able to unhear “Scud is on my mind when you approach me” in Rochelle’s verse after somebody pointed it out on the forum back in the dark ages. The one thing I really don’t like is Una’s “You’re such a wordshakerrrrrrr, yeeeah” fadeout, I can’t explain why but it makes me cringe.

@Scaper (7.5) - I will never understand how Wordshaker didn’t end up being added to the Oxford dictionary after they spent several interviews explaining its meaning. Queens of semantics. ‘Velvet lining’s on your language’ is such a great lyric. I like the little bleep bloops going on in the background of the verses, especially during Vanessa’s verse, where the synths at the end of her lines start to sound like the sound effect from when someone loses a huge amount of money on a quiz show.

@daninternational (7) - They always seem to name their albums after the wrong tracks.

@louciano (5.5) - Never found anything to really say about this. It's okay but I'm never seeking it out.

Me neither, except that whenever I listen to it, it immediately becomes clear how much less enjoyable it is to me. Even more so than songs I'd consider meh because those at least have their moments brilliance, and this has none. I don't understand remotely how there could be any alternate universe that gets this as a single instead of Forever Is Over. I'm so happy we corrected the wrong doings of 2015 and reversed their ranking in comparison to each other.

One of those Vanessa showcase pieces of their early years. The song only ever got 5 shoutouts total and 3 belong to her.

New Year's break and we crack into the Top 20 on either Sunday or Monday we'll leave the pre-On Your Radar song alone.
