I think it's my 11.

Well, they're both 10's to me.

But Up was one of the first songs I loved by them, so I'm okay with it winning this Chasing Lights battle again. Sorry!

Hazey Says | I used to think the remix was better, what a trash opinion that was because you lose the power from the vocals, especially Vanessa’s verse which pairs so perfectly with Frankie. Also, that production is like an updated version of something the Supremes would be rolling in with and I love that infinitely! (10)

After some fan favorite album tracks, it’s interesting to note that this was released as the last single from Chasing Lights because it was discovered to be a fan favorite. Makes you wonder why artists can’t do this on every album.

The single version was a slight remix that fans were on either side of fence about, however the Cahill remix did get some unexpected love.

The overall narrative of the last rate was that this should’ve been a huge anthem with the general public and not overlooked or made a single so late into the album’s campaign. Comments seemed to love how sassy it is and appreciate the kind of attitude the track goes for. Mollie’s opening verse was praised by several voters, widely considered one of her best moments in the band’s discography.

Commentary

@MilesAngel (11) - I had to give my 11 to a song from my favourite Saturdays album. I was surprised to see Work not get any 11's in the last rate, and it definitely deserves one, so that helped with my decision. But I've always loved Work for its lyrics and its sweeping production. I really love that string flourish at the end. You know you gotta Work!

Unfortunately, nobody joined in with you take make it multiple 11's, but at least you represented!

@Shockbox (10) - If this is the single version then make it a 9, the album version is far superior. Also considered this is my 11, purely for Mollie's iconic note on SNT.

You must mean this:

@saviodxl (10) - This moment lives in my mind rent free:

@Sally_Harper (10) - Absolute banger. PUT YOUR BOOTS ON BABYYYYYYY. I still love the video too.

@daninternational (10) - Pop songs called Work are always 10/10. Prove me wrong.

Rihanna, Ciara and Missy, Fifth Harmony (I know it's not exact but close enough!) yep it checks out!

@Phonetics Girl (10) - Once again, I was blindsided by the different single version but actually both are golden-plated infectious capitalism bops I can never get enough of. Pump me full of it!

@Scaper (10) - The single mix is a perfect example of one minor tweak robbing a song of what made it amazing. I love the fake strings and synths on this but the single mix drowns them out with unnecessary claps and drums.

@JakobVision22 (8) - My favorite song from an album that isn't exactly my favorite. Even though this song didn't chart as well as the others did, I feel like it sound-wise set the girls up for where they would go for their next releases.

Yikes to the first sentence, considering the score.

@Ezz (7) - Feels a bit more generic than some of the first album tracks.

@louciano (5.25) - Never understood the love for this one. It just doesn't do anything for me and is generally forgettable.

Shoutout Queen

Mollie.png

We have quite the battle going for the ultimate shoutout queen trophy, considering Mollie and Una were tied before Una pulled back ahead after Ego. Now they're tied again as Mollie's note helped her to 8 shoutouts compared to Vanessa's 4. (Everyone else got at least 1)

---

This edition's Top Four includes 2015's #4 Get Ready, Get Set #7 Up, #3 Higher, #2 All Fired Up, and #1 Not Giving Up. They all got at least two 11's and twenty 10's. They all got at least a 9.32 average and they're 2015 averages went up.

No hints needed anymore. Whatever goes will also take an album with them. What is #4 tomorrow?

My 11 was between Work, Up and If This Is Love. Any one could take my 11 on any different day. So I looked at the last rate, which made up my mind, and I'm happy that Work got its deserved 11.

I always kind of knew that Up would be the last Chasing Lights song standing, and that's fine with me.

Work is one of their songs that’s got better over time for me. A banger & one of their best showcases of vocals for everyone in the group (except I guess Una). I almost wish I’d given it my 11 instead of Disco Love to see if that would have bumped it up a couple of places.

For the final 4 I’d like to see:

4) All Fired Up
3) Not Giving Up
2) Higher
1) Up

As we scored the songs for this rate, imagine my horror when we compared notes and my Mom casually said "3" for this next song. I warned her how it would go over with other voters, but she held her ground.

Oh no, mother what you have you done!? *ducks and hides*

My 11 was between Work, Up and If This Is Love.

If she had given at least a 6, it would have been our #3 song, but now we end up with the same Top 3 songs as 2015.

Hazey Says | Gotta love Vanessa's pre-chorus, especially the first one and the final bridge repeated with "I don't want protection, life is better off the line…". The cadence in this part and the chorus is incredible. The catchiness of it never dulls at all. (10)

Their first Top 5 hit, the song became one of their signature anthems, with the catch phrase “up is where we go from here” on advertisements, and “finest selection” chosen as the title for their greatest hits.
Despite being described as what the band is at its core by a few voters, it only managed #7 last time because there was a slew of voters who admitted that their love for it has died off and that it now sounds dated, especially the production. However, nostalgia would help fight back the lower-to-mediocre scores when people remembered the beginning of their Saturday standom, when they first became obsessed with Up.
Commentary

@Attis (11) - My first introduction to The Saturdays, ah what a memory and what a great song it is. The fact it still holds up till this day, aah that's pop excellence. That banging chorus, with that wooshing synths thrown out to make it even more dramatic ughhh.

@daninternational (11) - Girl band arrival songs are often the best. See Sound of the Underground, Don't Cha, Cardboard Box... an absolute bop even without the Wideboys remix

I don't know if any of those are the best for those bands, but I'll let you have it.

@saviodxl (10) - It's the robotic beat and the armography for me. Vanessa and Una own the verses and the Power Ranger styled color scheme of the video makes it even more fun.
Power Rangers is a description I've never heard for it before it, but oddly it works!

@Sally_Harper (10) - Still one of their best songs, and I love the dance routine. I cannot describe electronic music to save my life but the blippy noise is excellent, as are the sirens. Also, I still, genuinely, think of the lyric “This is the final call for all destinations” EVERY TIME I CATCH A TRAIN. Their impact.

Yas, I love when my favorite pop songs get attached to everyday life moments like that. I know what you mean.

@Scaper (9) - I’m one of the only people who prefers the album version. I think that’s simply because I heard that version first and had already played it 5 million times before hearing the single mix. The song hasn’t aged as well as some of the other singles but it’s still a bop.

Same for me, honestly. However, the next couple comments are probably the popular opinion:

@Phonetics Girl (8.5) - I forgot how lifeless the album version was. Obvs, rating the single edit but I've never liked how it's split between Vanessa and Una. Like, give the others a line here or there!

@Ezz (8.25) - Thank heaven for the Radio edit, I thought my headphones had failed on hearing the album version. I love the unusual rhythm.

@louciano (8.25) - Infectiously fun and a standout on the album but falls short compared to other singles that really elevate the sound that this song goes for.

@Hazey's Mom (3) - This would be a lot better without those blip-beaping sounds, they are so agitating!

See, nothing you can do when it's a prominent part of the song's soundscape and a reason some commentors here love the song. Sometimes she will fixate on one part of a song as a negative and then she can't hear the rest of the song's greatness anymore because of it. It happens to all of us, please don't cancel her for future rates ddd.

Shoutout Queens

One has never been mentioned without the other in tow -- tied with 7 shoutouts and being the only girls get a single shoutout. This was an easy duo-win and gives Una the leg up on Mollie once again.

Even though I love Up, I kind of love that your mom gave it such a harsh score! I can relate I've given harsh scores based on one element before.

If anything, it proves when I have her vote in these there is no funny business going on as far as me just trying to just duplicates high scores for my favorites. Not that anyone was worried about that, but sometimes I wonder what people think. I don't even tell her my scores for songs, until she has provided hers.

Gave my 11, and still a hater ddd

Gurl, it was the first thing I thought when I saw the music video!

It's fine, it just caught me off guard, but it's kind of perfect!

I'm going to start a petition to have Hazey's mum participate in every rate. I completely disagree with her on Up but I kind of stan her courage and determination!

I just texted her to do another catch up today because her infamous 3/10 just got eliminated dd. She loves doing these, she'd even join the forum if it ever opened back up.

I bet I can even get her to score in the Avril Lavigne Re-Rate whenever I get to that one. She actually loves the last winner "Rock n Roll".

For such a basic bop (someone just put on the drum demo on a keyboard as the backing track) and childish video, "Up" is really what made me pay attention The Saturdays and made them stand out from all the girl bands.

The video is all sorts of mesmerising and baffling, as pointed out in Mr PJs write up around the time.

https://www.popjustice.com/briefing/13-good-things-about-the-saturdays-up-video/

They also seemed to think the video was pretty ridiculous themselves (This interview is probably also one of my favourites of them, they were just able to laugh themselves..)
