The Sugababes Discography Rate

Oh, and if y'all were interested in how things went down over the voting period, here is the progression chart for the Top 30, in increments of 5 voters:

progression.jpg

Basically, "Ace Reject" smoothly glided into the top spot. My freakout happened around the 55 voter mark when uhm I entered some scores in incorrectly; it wasn't my fault really, just some heifers who thought they were too good for rounded scores. When I corrected it, they had only caused a slight dip, and from the next set onwards the song had ascended to the peak.

But yes, all of the Top 4 had a stint at the top. Also interesting the dwindling fortunes of "Too Lost In You" versus the reverse for "Round Round"; how much better things could have been for "Promises" versus how much worse they could've been for "Maya" etc. As always, you wonder what difference just a couple more voters could have made.

I cannot believe Overload started at number 32!! Thank goodness it made the top 10 in the end!

Yes to more Conversation's Over love. I am kicking myself for not giving it a 10 as well. Three was such a strong album, hey?

It's an album of incredibly high highs and surprisingly low lows. The only difference for me after this rate is that I've developed more of an appreciation for some of the tracks I used to ignore (notably Conversation's Over, Situation's Heavy, Buster and Maya).

Nasty Ghetto is still a racket, though.

I'm sorry I didn't sign up and make an account on PJ sooner.

I'm still not done reading the right ups. I'm taking my time wanting this rate to last longer

Sugababes used to be a band i only knew from the singles (hence why i did not join the rate but closely followed what was going on) but this well crafted rate made me discover them to a full extent.Your writeups were full of heart and thought and i loved the introduction part at the start where you talked about band's history and reviewed the records.
I'll be always thankful to you for that.

@beyoncésweave - thank you for such a comprehensive, all-encompassing rate. The blood, sweat and tears you've poured into this and the level of dedication is incredible. You've made me think about songs I've thought a lot about in ways I'd never even considered before. All of the wonderful commentary provided by other forum users has opened my mind up. I even have new favourite Sugababes songs, some even dating back to the first album (thanks @Jonathan27!), songs I've listened to for over a decade and only now have found a deeper affinity with.

I felt very conflicted about the top two; I love an underdog story but I didn't see Ace Reject as a worthy champion. Of course, it only took reading the first paragraphs of the write up for me to change my mind and accept Ace Reject as worthy after all. I gave it 10 points because it's a brilliantly composed piece of music that blooms over the course of the song and sees Mutya, Keisha and Heidi operate at their individual, brilliant bests. I thought I didn't deserve to win because it didn't accurately represent the things I loved most about their output, but then, I've realised, I don't just love them for one particular reason and so I do agree with @berserkboi after all - it's an accomplished track precisely because it doesn't just tick one box, it ticks so many of them.

Freak Like Me remains their best single for better or worse; it embodies that spiky, rebellious edge that the first line up had in defiant spades bubbling beneath their melancholic surface; the slightly older and wiser Keisha and Mutya, with new addition Heidi, let it all out in the form of an inspired mash up and the perfect music video. The song is poignant because it's the second chapter of the Sugababes story, it marks their new beginning with Heidi and makes me so happy that Mutya and Keisha managed to fight back against an industry that would have happily buried them, and tried to do so. It's why I'm so determined to see them do it again (any day now... please... it's been six years...) in 2017, to break down barriers that the industry throws up against all sorts of artists, but particularly women, and particularly women of colour who have been labelled as bullies, dogs, trash, bitches. That reputation hasn't followed either of Siobhan or Heidi, despite both women being as involved in any Sugababes drama, real or imagined, as any other member in the band's history. So, had Freak Like Me won, it would have been a worthy winner, but it was pipped to the post by the underdog. Is there anything more fitting than a 2.0 song outperforming all expectations when the odds were stacked against it?

Thanks @beyoncésweave - this rate has been like picking up a book you just can't put down and I'll be returning to this from time to time in the months and years ahead to re-read all these thought provoking analyses of my favourite songs by my favourite group. x

The impact: last night I got a ride from one club to another and when it was my turn to pick a song we blasted Ace Reject going over the Brooklyn Bridge and I filled in the other passengers on the rate in excruciating drunken detail. Then when I got home I put the Babes on shuffle and wound up getting my life to She's a Mess. Oh she was. Shoulda given it a 10 hehe.

@beyoncésweave thank you so much for doing this. It has been a journey and your dedication to this band over the years through my time on this site has definitely helped cement this band as my favorite musical act ever. This rate was a wonderful experience and I truly felt your love and care for the Sugababes as well as how dedicated you are to uphold their honor. Wonderfully run rate and the winner, while unexpected, is perfect. Thank you xx

A few thoughts:

Better. Whenever I hear Heidi's middle 8 I crack up because I hear the lyric 'You could be a pig with me'.

Freak Like Me. It is definitely one of the best songs ever and I love that the video features one of New Girl's boyfriends.

Ace Reject. Again it is beyond words in it's beauty.
I thought that the 4th album should have been titled 'Change Of Heart' after the song. I know that some think that the actual title is awkward.
