The Sugababes Discography Rate

I love your work in the Beyoncé rate
Ah, yes. The rate that I'm running, thank you. Positioning yourself to take over should the worst happen? Spiking @beyoncésweave's wine at night are you precious eh? Stirring a little something into ha dinner? Drizzling a wee secret in ha morning coffee are you? I hear them; your whispers down the hall, "Oh, @beyoncésweave, my darling. I don't think the medicine the doctor gave you is working. Here, drink up, my sweet. I made this soup this afternoon."

I'm onto you.

My average for Sweet 7 is 7.17. It has one of my 10s on it. It originally had three 10s on it, but I changed that to an 8.5, a 9 and a 10.

I look forward to seeing how @beyoncésweave is going to deal with this in the reveal when those three songs come up. (Also, I wonder if any of them are the two 10s @Mina has given.)

(Sweet 7 also has a 3, two 5s and a 5.5 from me.)

Mina, you hearing this? Your position as rate villain has been usurped.

*side-eye*

(Also, I wonder if any of them are the two 10s @Mina has given.)

To put anyone interested out of their suspense, if you add up my scores for Get Sexy, Wear My Kiss, Wait For You, Thank You For the Heartbreak, She's A Mess, and Give It To Me Now, you'd get 29. Those include my 2 highest and 4 lowest scores of that album.

@beyoncésweave, thank you for extending the deadline for the last-minute folk!
I'll be sending in my votes by tonight.

Thoughts:
Is it me, or has One Touch and AWDF aged into hoary, filler messes with some great singles?
Three and TIMW (Mutya Cut) remain paramount.
I'm surprised how much I like Catfights so far.

What was your album rankings?

Oh, that's still the lowest-scoring album. I've generally scored quite high - I have one entire album which never dips below an 8.

Outside of Sweet 7 there are barely any album tracks or singles that I dislike. The B-sides are a somewhat different story.

I'll have you know that I pay @Solenciennes a very reasonable fraction of the minimum wage.

Let me not mince words: Sweet 7 is an abomination.

In isolation of course, it’s ‘just’ a terrible album. A smattering of Roc Nation fillers which Rihanna couldn’t be bothered demo-ing, and which Bruno Mars stole from the label trash pile for them. Most of the album is composed of mid- to high-tempo electropop/R&B numbers with elements of dance running through. Whilst the band had dabbled in these before, the difference here is that most of the songs here are, by and large, awful. Sure, there were a number of cuts in each of the band’s eras before which would qualify as “not good”, but most of their crimes were being boring or poorly constructed. By comparison, the vast majority of Sweet 7 is actively terrible, put together awfully, delivered soullessly and with themes that are barely themes in places, and in others, nauseatingly offensive. The self-objectification in “Wear My Kiss” for example, comes as horrifyingly misogynistic, as does the drunk-shaming of “She’s A Mess”. For band that had seemingly sought to empower women throughout, if not explicitly then through a body of work that encouraged self-confidence and worth, this was a shockingly distasteful turn.

But what tips it over into unbelievable trash is the fact that this is a Sugababes album. Considering all the albums that came before it, including even the average Change, this is a drastic, terrifying plunge off the cliff. It is a full throated spitting at the faces of the music-buying public in general, and most of all, the band’s fans. The lack of thought and imagination here, and the idea that the band’s management thought fans would buy this shit, is grossly offensive. As for what the album signifies in the band’s career trajectory, it’s nothing but tragic. A band that started with three young girls writing songs by themselves reflecting on life had turned into three other women becoming mouthpieces for an assembly-line from hell.

There could have been some direction here if they took “About A Girl” and maybe the intent of “No More You” or “Crash & Burn” and made an album of basic bops and fluffy heartwarmers. Yet, even then, there’s an overwhelming sense to Sweet 7 that it's putridly unsalvageable. Even if you could enjoy these songs in isolation, the merest whiff of anything the band had done before would (and should) cause a majority of these songs to disintegrate. Given all this, the drama of Keishagate barely makes the album worse. If anything, it’s even more appropriate given the album’s content that it was rerecorded in a hurry with an unknown replacement. The horror of the album is such that no set of singers could elevate the material. In a perverse way, the fact that it was recorded by a new lineup does help erase its existence from memory, which is how I’d inarguably wager that the vast majority of fans prefer to think of it.

It is an unbelievable, infuriating and ultimately heartbreaking note to end the band’s discography on. As I’ve said before, it’s almost appropriate given the band’s many ructions through the decade that it all ends like this, but even then, it’s a bitter, bitter pill to swallow.

Crash & Burn, No More You and the Keisha version of Thank You For The Heartbreak are the only songs I return to on Sweet 7.

She's A Mess was my lowest score. The worst song ever released by the Sugababes.

About A Girl and Crash & Burn are the only songs from it in my library and that's all there ever will be. The rest can burn in hell. But those two are great pop songs and I hope they do decently.
