Finally finished the season (sans reunion) and overall I think it ranks just below Australia season one in terms of the Traitors seasons I've watched. I even found the final outcome to be satisfying overall.
This was the only season of the show (besides Australia 1) where I was truly rooting for the traitors and actively against the faithful figuring it out, especially once Dan was banished. For once I was grateful for the incompetence of the likes of Sandra, Sheree and MJ. It doesn’t help that the most dislikable faithfuls were the ones leading the charge (Peter, Kevin, Trishelle). Saying that, the traitors made SO many mistakes that otherwise could have flipped the game (targeting Peter when they knew he could have a shield, trying to recruit Peter, recruiting Kate instead of MJ or Sandra, Kate’s ‘selfish’ comment to Phaedra, killing Sheree instead of Trishelle).
Phaedra was such a star throughout and while it’s frustrating that it was Dan who outed her, seeing her pull herself all the way to the penultimate banishment was amazing TV, even though she wasn't that strong strategically and pretty much gave up towards the end. I wish she had at least committed to trying to throw names out once she had heat on her, but alas.
An issue I had was that the producers' hands were very present on the show at times, which made the traitors' job even harder - no banishment when Peter was likely to get chopped over Parvati, giving the faithful the option to turn down recruitment, making Phaedra first in the crossbow challenge). I also didn’t like that they put a cliffhanger at the end of episode 9 rather than let us savour in Peter’s delicious banishment. The crossbow logic against Phaedra was so frustrating because it captured Trishelle’s entitlement and stupidity - but it was ungratifying as the final blow against Phaedra because there was no logical reason why Trishelle's pane would be spared despite it being easier to hit than the bottom. I didn’t like how much her victim complex was indulged. I’m glad to see her getting whacked online throughout and after the show.
Sheree never quite grasping what show she’s on and yet still making it to the final episode was truly my favourite subplot of the season.
Trishelle and CT making it to the end ultimately was a great case of storytelling and crafting a winners arc. Even though she was insufferable and horribly dressed, they were the only faithful to successfully maintain an alliance without raising suspicion and utilising the shields, albeit through whining. I also don’t think MJ was ‘robbed’ because she was generally wrong the entire game and didn't particularly help get money into the prize pot at all.
I'm very much looking forward to season 3, albeit concerned that Chanel and Bob won't go as far as I want them to.
