I assume the thread title is a reference to this?

In this case, it wasn't! I have been trying to come up with witty titles that allude to the eliminated song without explicitly quoting the lyrics etc. Sometimes (most times) they're not that great though!! But I am always here for more (mo?) Mo Collins!!

I thought my 11 would be out after getting the tag notification. I’m glad Shakira reached the top 10, but wished it was higher!

Such an amazing song in both English and Spanish. This is the song that started my Shakira obsession in both languages which continues to this day.

Such bad timing with the U.K. release though. At any other time it would have been #1. At least it still sold well. I wish she was still having big hits here.

Two more eliminations today, and we’ll have our top 5!

Are you beginning to wonder what other song won’t be in the top 5?

Dannii scores the highest placing for a song that did not receive any 11’s! Young!Talent!!Time!!!

Idolator gives a great overview of Dannii’s history: “To Australian children of the ‘80s, she was Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato rolled into one as the star of a hugely popular children’s TV show where pre-teens belted out the latest hits by Prince and Madonna in sequined leotards and bubble skirts. To British teens of the late ‘90s, she was the ultimate party girl — ruling the social pages of the tabloids a decade before Paris Hilton turned it into a viable career path. Those worlds finally collided in 2001 when an international club smash established Dannii as a full-fledged international pop star.”

Yes, in 2001, after Dannii helped turn Riva’s instrumental song “Stringer” into the top 3 UK hit “Who Do You Love Now,” London Records offered Dannii a six-album deal. If you know your Dannii history, you already know that we wouldn’t actually get six albums out of that deal. But we did get Neon Nights along with “I Begin To Wonder,” which would end up as (to date) her highest-charting UK single.

“I Begin To Wonder” was initially released by Jean-Claude Ades (JCA). He told About.com: At the time I was more of a producer in the background and I recorded a track with a girl who had her own rock project going on. She came to Ibiza in 2001 and we recorded this track in Ibiza. I didn’t expect anything. It was just like any other house record. No one actually wanted to sign a record because it was so different at the time. I remember in 2001 it was more about disco house. Then an Italian label called Do it Yourself signed the record and all of a sudden it became massive in Italy; it was number one. I got invited to play at a festival in front of 50,000 people and other stuff like that. That’s why I put my name as JCA. I didn’t want it to be like in a song, I wanted to use it as a project but there was nobody fronting the project. All of a sudden I was treated like a pop star and I had to go and do interviews. I had to go to MTV’s “Top of the Pops” and stuff like that. I got pushed in front of the camera and I didn’t want it or expect it before. After that the record went famous in several countries like Australia, and all over Europe. We were close to releasing the record in UK with Warner because I was signed into Warner in Germany with that record. I said to Warner in UK, “Okay, we don’t have anyone fronting the project, what do you think about Dannii rerecording the vocals.” She loved that track and for me it was perfect because I didn’t want to front the project any more so I gave it to her.

Ian Masterson, who produced “I Begin To Wonder,” told Idolator: “We spent quite a lot of time getting the vocals down as it’s such a particular sound, and Dannii was determined to give it her own personality. We had to write lyrics for a second verse as it didn’t exist. When we finished ‘I Begin To Wonder’ there was definitely a feeling that this could be a big record for her. The JCA production is really simple, but clever, and her vocal pushes the chorus to soar.”

In 2013, NME included Neon Nights on their list of the greatest albums of 2003 and called “I Begin To Wonder” a “filthy electro gem.” LA Weekly kept it simple: “Dannii Minogue Is The Superior Minogue.” But minimariah on UrbanDictionary.com did not agree: “If you could give Dannii Minogue one award, it would be for making the shittest records ever!! Im being totally serious, how can somebody make such crap records. She tries to copy Kylie, when Kylie is hardly fantasic either. Stop trying to hog fame Danni, you plastic biatch!” Yeah, take that Dannii! (NB: All spelling and grammatical errors are minimariah's fault.)

Speaking of “copying” Kylie, after the success that her sister had with her “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head” / “Blue Monday” mash-up, Dannii had to get in on the action too. Make sure you check out the video that @phily693 included with comments. (RIP Pete!)

@Blond – 8.5 – The production on this is so fucking great.

@berserkboi – 9.9 – love this but the JCA version is a tiny bit better

@Sally_Harper – 6 – I hadn’t heard this before but the title always seems to come up whenever Dannii’s music is discussed so I was expecting something amazing. I….didn’t get it. It’s decent but underwhelming.

@Empty Shoebox – 10 – See when the chorus starts, and the synths come in. That moment right there is why this song gets a ten.

@Untouchable Ace – 9.75 – I remember hearing the JCA version before this which I preferred. Maybe that’s why I prefer Kylie although I didn’t care when she did the same thing.

@DJHazey – 9 – One of the few Dannii songs that stands the test of time for me. They are truly few and far between.

@Mike – 7 – Not as good as Put The Needle On It, but still one of her best.

@Rei Ayanami – 10 – Terrific. Great beat and cool, sexy vocals.

@KingBruno – 10 – The J.C.A. production of “I Begin To Wonder” throws the song straight into the dark electro territory. Along with its stunning music video, the complete bundle delivers high–end exhilaration. It’s potentially her “Can’t Get You Outta My Head”. It’s the obvious X factor on the overall fantastic Neon Nights.

@iheartpoptarts – 8 – This will beat ‘Kids’ but no other Kylie songs. Obvious prediction is obvious. SHE CALLED IT AGAIN Y’ALL!!

@phily693 – 10 – Total bop! I went through a phase when this came out where I only liked this mashup and wasn’t a fan of the original.

I'm surprised that Dannii was bested by two weaker Kylie tracks...

Which means our Top 6 is?

Kylie x 2
Girls Aloud
Mis-Teeq
Sophie Ellis-Bextor
Samantha Mumba

I fear (without checking) that I only have 2 x 10s left - that said, I also have my prediction remaining (Team Altogether for the No. 2 Win!!!!)

Good news! We’re heading into the range of 9+ scores.

Bad news: I know I know I know I know I know I know I know this elimination will make many of you want to burn this goddamn rate down right now.

I’m not sure if we should be GLORIFYING crime, Sophie! You know that people always want to do what you tell them not to do... so let’s see, we’re NOT supposed to kill the groove and we’re NOT supposed to steal the moves? Now I absolutely will try to do those things!!! And you say “If you think you’re getting away, I will prove you wrong!” Ummmm that’s basically imprisoning someone. “GONNA BURN THIS GODDAMN HOUSE RIGHT DOWN?!?!” Actual pyromaniac much!?!? And I thought this BEFORE I saw the video and realized that I would never again be able to look at a pad of butter the same way.

By the way, if Gregg Alexander could co-write a song like this, I’m a little peeved that the New Radicals never continued onward, because I would have been here for a male-vocaled disco-lite EP at least. But anyway, his work here with Sophie brought her to the top 20 in 20 countries.

Becky Stefani on Drowned in Sound wrote: Tie me down and strangle me with a feather boa if this isn’t the best pop song since Diana Ross took off her diamond kitten heels and hung up her ball gown for the last time! These 3 minutes of glitter soaked disco boogie capture that WONDERFUL feeling of being in a nightclub at midnight, with a ridiculously expensive cocktail in your hand, stumbling onto the dance floor to bop and twirl to your favourite 80s hits. This song could have been written in any of the past 3 decades and that’s part of its charm. Craftily, it manages to sound retro whilst being utterly, defiantly, modern. It’s beside the point that Sophie Ellis-Bextor is the coolest pop girl around at the moment. You get the impression that she doesn’t really give a damn – with a raised eyebrow and her tongue firmly in her cheek, she’s somehow maintained that indie cred that Posh Spice and Kylie would KILL for. And STILL managed to nab the sky-scraping chart positions! This is, frankly, tastier than Tim Wheeler dipped in chocolate and laid out on a bed of rose petals. Buy it, steal it, make it yours!

NME described “Murder On The Dancefloor” as “a song with its heart in the discotheques of the 1970s. Not, though, the exclusivity of Studio 54, more the memory of Camber Sands and the first stirrings of lust under an irresponsibly used strobe light.”

The Guardian wrote: Sophie Ellis-Bextor disentangled herself from the indie scene and became a dance diva, adding her distracted vocals and her own lyrics to Spiller’s Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love). The biggest-selling record of last year, Groovejet propelled Ellis-Bextor on to the road to pop glory. She has travelled well, engaging in chart fights and personal affronts with Posh Spice while pleasing the tabloids with her long legs and anecdotes about her Blue Peter presenter mum. Sophie Ellis-Bextor is a bona-fide pop star. Except, on the evidence of this debut [album], she isn’t. Just as she has neglected to undergo the ritual embarrassment involved in making it big, Ellis-Bextor has refused to produce the kind of Saturday-night-out-with-the-girls pop you’d imagine Read My Lips would embrace. Instead this is a collection of 1970s disco, 1980s electronica and undefinable drama that, like a rabid dog, should be approached with fascination but extreme caution… When Ellis Bextor lets herself go a bit, she shines…Better still is the disco groove of Murder on the Dancefloor, the closest thing to Groovejet by several miles. Overlook the unnecessary 1970s guitar doodlings and this catchy floor-filler is great: Ellis-Bextor is almost singing with a smile, though that renders her threat to “burn this goddamn house right down” completely innocuous.

@londonrain – 10 – What a song. What a video. Sophie’s delivery is perfect for this song and it really shows.

@PushyBakerFriend – 8.5 – One of those songs everyone talks about (on this forum) but I’d never heard before this rate.

@KingBruno – 10 – I listened to Read My Lips once and I must say that there was no single song that came even close to equal this glittering culmination – that bass alone exterminates.

@Rei Ayanami – 10 – I’ve seriously slept on this woman. She seems to have so many wonderful songs.

@DJHazey – 10 – Definitely an 11 contender. I remember I hadn’t even been on this forum for a year and Island and I kind of dove into her music at the same time (I think he was bit ahead of me) and this was the first song I ever heard. I didn’t even know who she was before that day and EVERYTHING changed. I was as obsessed with her discography for a while as I was when I dove in ABBA last year.

@Untouchable Ace – 10 – She should have stormed America as well with this, It was so fresh, good and British. Pop needed this.

@berserkboi – 10 – Classic through & through

@iheartpoptarts – 10 – Best most violent pop bop.

@phily693 – 10 – An absolute stomper of a pop song with a video to match. Truly iconic! I’ve never really noticed the strings too much before but what a fantastic discovery.

@əʊæ – 8 – What a classic.

@Mike – 6 – Beautifully self–aware video – as if Sophie could ever win a dance contest by honest means, God love her – but the song never did it for me.

@Empty Shoebox – 9 – I’m not sure exactly what’s missing from this song that would make it a ten, but it just feels like it’s on a slightly lower level than the ones I have tenned.

@Blond – 2 – I don’t understand the Sophie Ellis-Bextor appeal and I know that makes me a minority as a pop loving gay.

@Sprockrooster – 9 – This is basically a 10 with that video, but it wore off a bit in time.

@Sally_Harper – 10 – I’m surprised at how well this has held up. WHAT A TUNE.

@Rogue – 10 – God what a classic. I cannot help but do the stamp from the video whenever I hear it.
