How should we proceed with Part 2 of the rate?

  1. Finish Part 1 completely and then start Part 2

    39.3%
  2. Open voting for Part 2 when results for Part 1 commence

    60.7%
  3. Something else

  1. “Everybody knows… Almost doesn't count.” Well, you’re welcome to feel that way, Brandy, but the rest of us are here to celebrate the songs that ALMOST made it to the top of the charts in the 2000s.

As you listen to the songs that reached #2 in the first decade of the third millennium, you’ll learn (or remember) that the UK charts and popular culture by extension reflected a wide range of genres and trends—everything from garage and trance to pop and dance, along with a few guys with guitars (and some Transylvanian twins). Certainly you’d probably get the same history lesson by looking at the list of #1 songs, but here on Popjustice, I think it’s in our collective DNA to fight for the underdogs, right? And let’s just get this out of the way from the jump—if you’re looking for a musically knowledgeable, erudite, sonic-terminology-knowing host like @Ironheade, you’re in for a world of hurt in this rate, folks.

Without any further ado, it is my honor and honour to welcome you to the (never imitated, never duplicated) UK #2’s OF THE 2000’s RATE!! *fanfare* PART ONE! *smaller fanfare*

The list of #2 songs that we are using for this rate was compiled by Neil Derek Fletcher, the only child of Derek & Elaine Fletcher. And I’m pretty sure Elaine Fletcher’s son would never lie to us! In any event, if we find any leftover or missing #2’s, we can add them in later. (Please note: Your host will never make any “number two” puns during the rate. No matter how tempting it may be.)

Since there were so many frigging songs that peaked at #2 in the "aughts," we’ll split the rate into two parts of roughly equivalent size. Unfortunately, those did not also split into two equivalent time spans, so Part 1 of the rate covers 2000-2003 and Part 2 will include 2004-2009.

You know the standard rules, but read on for a special twist:

    1) Don’t pick up the ph Please listen to and score all songs on a scale from 0-10.
    2) You each have the ability to give one 11. If you want to use it, please do. If you don’t want to use it, who hurt you?
    3) Decimals? Really? Ugh, but I hate math. Fine, you can have .25s, .50s, and .75s. No decimals between 10 and 11. Nice try.
    4) Double A-sides will be ranked individually. Whatever.
    5) If one of the videos is of the wrong song, or the links are wrong, help a host out! I tried to find official music videos where possible, or at the very least mimed performances or studio versions if not.
    6) HERE IS THE TWIST!! When you send your scores, please send your guess for the song that you think will end up at #2 in this rate. Oh, the indignity of just missing out on the #1 spot on the UK Singles Chart AND missing out on #1 in our rate! But, the person/persons closest to the correct answer will……………BE GIVEN A SECOND ELEVEN TO USE IN PART TWO OF THE RATE!!!!! (Am I allowed to do this? I take it back if I can’t. I’m also OK with scuttling it if everyone hates the concept.)
    7) Commentary and/or shade appreciated!!

YOUR VOTES FOR PART ONE ARE DUE BY TUESDAY NIGHT, JUNE 19TH, 11:59PM EAST COAST USA TIME. I WILL POST UPDATES AS WE GET CLOSER. SORRY FOR ABUSING CAPS LOCK.

    HAPPY VOTING!!!

PS: As an aside, how would people feel about potentially having the voting period for the 2nd part of the rate during the reveals of the 1st part? I have the lists ready to go. On the one hand, I know rating 2 in a row might be a lot, but it also means that the whole thing wraps up quicker and another rate can start earlier? What do you think?

  13. Good to see Black Eyed Peas telling this guy to shut up.
Is it as terrible as it looks?

  14. For some reason they were left off the fletcher lists. But yes it was 2005 that the Elvis songs appeared. We can have a group vote whether to include vintage songs in Part 2. Jeff Buckley and Michael Jackson also posthumously show up in the charts.

  15. I don't know why I'm asking. All the Elvis songs will get the same comment (and probably the same score) from me.

I think I can do these all pretty much from memory. Deciding on an 11 is going to be torture though.
