Re: The ULTIMATE J-Pop Queens Singles Rate, Part III: Koda Kumi
Ok finally finished voting myself and here's some thoughts as I went through
-The run of singles from "love across the ocean" to "Hot Stuff" is god damn near flawless, save the less-than-great-but-still-okay songs maze, COME WITH ME and 24.
-The run of songs directly following Hot Stuff but before the 12 singles project is among her most bland. From Butterfly (aka the lessor rip-off of the legendary Cutie Honey) to Star; what a completey forgettable period!
-Her early videos really were GREAT for the most part. Much better than I remember. Her more recent vids look bland by comparison! Call me when she throws in a pussy pop break as blazing as what she pulls in the Crazy 4 U PV!
-The 12 singles project / second session is still fucking epic.
-I'll be there is OBVIOUSLY Kumi's best slowie / ballad.
-Cherry girl is still... just... eewtyawr#$%ty4qeFKLrte. ICONIC song. That and JUICY on the same album... TOO much.
-Aisho is also one of her nicer ballads. The intrumentation is lush. That and the LEGENDARY BUT = one of her strongest singles for sure.
-Run For Your Life is a lot better than I remember... HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?! (Also L O L @ them basically re-using the same damn comic book theme for the Inside Fishbowl PV)
-LAST ANGEL - Still a GROUNDBREAKING collaboration between Japan and Korea. Easing national tensions since 2007, quite simply when will your faves?
-That Ain't Cool was, is, and always will be shit. People giving this such high scores, like.. really?! I don't get it.
-Lick me is better than I remember too... is Aime proud of me yet???
I ended up giving what can only be described as an UNHOLY amount of 10's in this rate... though the average of all my scores combined is still only a 7.6 or something, so the massive amount of 10's were clearly balanced out with low scores for some of her most fucking awful ballads.
Anyway, now to start inputting all this stuff into Excel. Can't wait to receive more scores!
