    1. TABOO
    Highest score - 10 (x13) / Lowest score - 8 (x2)

Our winner - "TABOO" is the 41st by Koda Kumi, released on October 8, 2008. It was the 2nd single in advance of Koda's 7th studio album TRICK (2009). "TABOO" is one of Kumi's signature songs, and has been a fan-favorite since release, especially among western listeners for its dance-pop sound.

"TABOO" was an instant hit, topping the charts upon release and becoming her 5th #1 single. Physically it sold 88,405 copies in total and charted for 13 weeks on the Oricon. Digitally it was very successful, and is certified Platinum for downloads of more than 250,000.

"TABOO" was produced and composed by HIRO and co-written by Kumi. The song deals with the idea of breaking taboos and living how one truly believes. Speaking of the themes present in "TABOO", Kumi said in an interview, "Instead of trying stuff out and experiencing it, we put up a 'No' sign, we never try to break the taboos. Sometimes we shouldn't retreat into safety, we should have the courage to do things. Those are the feelings in this song."

    "Am I wrong?
    Is this a dream?
    Is it an illusion?
    I know, yet I can't help it
    I can't hide these feelings
It wasn't supposed to be like this...

Your heart is closed, I have so many keys in my hand
Which one is the secret key to open your heart?
Which side of you will it show me?
    It won’t stop, TABOO
    It can't be stopped, TABOO"

The video for "TABOO" portrays homosexuality and other "taboo" subjects to deliver Koda's message of "there really is no such thing as taboo". The PV for "TABOO" begins in a dark dining hall; Kumi enters the room of fancily dressed guests and greets them with a kiss. This stuffy scene is contrasted with other, sexier scenes in the music video. In a bathroom she is shown wearing a black mini-dress, performing sexually suggestive actions with both male and female dancers. In a red colored lounge area she is shown dressed as a scout, and is shown enjoying sexual gestures from two other women. At the end of a dark hallway in a hidden room, Kumi walks in on two of the male party guests kissing. She smiles and then returns to the dining hall where two women are also shown kissing. The video ends as Kumi and all of the party guests enjoy a night of dancing with no fear or inhibitions.

    ........................

So there you have it! Our winner - TABOO! Though let's have a round of applause for our runner up please...

    2. BUT
Highest score - 10 (x10) / Lowest score - 8 (x2, ignoring the one, sad, lonely person who actually thought this song was a 4)

"BUT" is the 35th single by Koda Kumi, released on March 14, 2007 as part of the double A-side "BUT / Aishou". It was the first single in advance of Koda's 6th studio album Kingdom (2008). The song was used as the theme song for the Japanese release of the American film Step Up 2 in early 2008.

The single "BUT / Aishou" was the first single for Kumi following her immensely successful album Black Cherry, and was yet another hit, reaching #2 on the Oricon and charting for 14 weeks, selling a total of 130,890 copies. Digitally "BUT" was also very successful, being certified Platinum for digital downloads, denoting sales of over 250,000 copies.

Musically, "BUT" is a funky dance tune with popping hip-hop / electronic production. The song is centered around a singular repeating drum beat with layers of deep, wailing synths in the verses and guitar notes in the chorus, giving it a unique feel from other Koda songs. Lyrically "BUT" is rather ambiguous, and could hold a variety of meanings. Some have interpreted it as having to do with homosexuality, while others feel it's a song about sexual liberation and freedom, or even masturbation.

"If I don't knock on your door tonight
    You'll never know
And you'll remain under your veil for eternity
Do you really want to stay cooped up like that?
    Which will make you happier?

The truth is you can't escape it
    Your body wont let go
I wont let anyone laugh at you
I wont let you have any regrets

    You know you love yourself
    (But)
You're just running from it aren't you?
    You know you love yourself
    (But)
    It's got you trapped
    You know you love yourself
    (But)
    Cover your eyes
    And you'll be there"

Kumi herself has said that while listening to the music for "BUT" for the first time, the first thing that came to her mind was homosexuality. Regarding the theme of homosexuality in the song, Kumi said in an interview, "I'm the type of person who thinks that [in a relationship] it doesn't matter what sex the other person is. No matter who they are, it doesn't change the 'I love this person' feeling, does it?"

The PV for "BUT" takes place in what is seemingly a dream. Kumi wakes in her bedroom dressed as a doll, her hand chained to a rope connecting to the ceiling. After breaking free from the restraint she runs around the room in a girlish manner stomping her feet. The mood changes from playful to more provocative as Kumi is seen riding in a brightly colored elevator, wearing a sexy bellhop uniform and holding a rainbow striped cane. She is shown dancing and posing in the elevator as it descends to a new room, resembling a hotel lobby. This room is full of men dressed in women's clothing, all wearing masked bellhop outfits. They are shown bowing to Kumi like servants; she in turn dances with these ladies, and even kisses one of them. There are also hints of homosexuality involved between the men in a small portion of the PV where two of the bellhops are shown kissing. The PV ends as night gives way to day, and Kumi is shown sleeping in her bedroom again. The events of the night before remain ambiguous.

    -------------------------------------

Finally finished! Can't believe it's nearly May and we started voting in February. Of course the new forum change didn't help in keeping this short... In any event, thank you everyone for taking part yet again! This rate in particular had EXCELLENT turn out and we got a great result, I think. This rate has only solidified my love for Kumi even more. When I was first getting into J-Pop I loved Kumi's music but never felt as connected to her as I do, say, Namie or Utada. However, this rate has given me a whole new appreciation for Kuu and her legacy. She truly is one of my favorite popstars ever, and her style - from slut-jams, to ballads, to cutesy songs, rock tracks, hip-hop, electronic or whatever - is all hers, and she owns it all. Her trademark warbley vocals, her iconic sense of fashion and music videos - truly legendary.

So, that's it for this rate! Stay tuned for the Ultimate J-Pop SHOWDOWN to find out the actual scores of all these songs, which will of course start some time after our fourth and final diva rate - Namie Amuro. Her thread will open next month, so keep an eye out for that.

    But for now, *muah*

Yay! Good win either way. Thank you for all your work 3Xs!

Can't wait for the Namie rate!

  9. Re: The ULTIMATE J-Pop Queens Singles Rate, Part III: Koda Kumi (#9)

Hahaha, oh my god, 3Xs, are you gonna be able to trump this in your final results post for Namie? I was literally laughing and wetting myself at the same time.

I'm really glad Taboo won, it really is her stand out track to me. Probably my favourite J-Pop song ever. So yay!~

Thanks again for doing all this, and I too can't wait for Namie! Hopefully we'll get a similar turn out.. although the new forum kinda turned a lot of people away..

  11. Re: The ULTIMATE J-Pop Queens Singles Rate, Part III: Koda Kumi (#9)

Thanks for doing the rate again 3Xs!

So wanted But to win! Think I need to get myself a copy of Taboo and start appreciating it as I ranked it the lowest.

Nice to see Japonesque as the top album but wanted Secret and Second Session to rank higher. Some good tunes like Cherry Girl, Juicy & Ko-so Ko-so in the Top 10 but I actually think I prefer the bottom end of the Top 20.

  12. Re: The ULTIMATE J-Pop Queens Singles Rate, Part III: Koda Kumi (#9)

    Predictable but satisfying outcome!

The biggest surprise for me was That Ain't Cool placing. I never realised how much people hated it!

  13. Re: The ULTIMATE J-Pop Queens Singles Rate, Part III: Koda Kumi (#9)

Thanks for doing this rate 3Xs, you seriously introduced me to an amazing artist that I will cherish forever. KUMI IS INCREDIBLE. I'm just sad that my beloved AFFECTION did so horribly. TAKE BACK and Trust Your Love are both AMAHZING and should've done better, but that's obviously due to the horrible taste of our forum members (I kid).
Anyway, THANK YOU SO MUCH. I'm so grateful to have been included and to have discovered what is now one of my favourite artists of all time.

  14. Re: The ULTIMATE J-Pop Queens Singles Rate, Part III: Koda Kumi (#9)

I imagine an albums rating alone would change the ranking based on the singles. Second Session was probably quite low due to more singles = Lower average for the lesser liked songs.

COLOUR OF MY SOUL and m.a.z.e's ranks where my only ':O How?' moments.

Yay!!! This post warms my heart. You're now a full-fledged kuu fanatic ♥

Happy to hear everyone enjoyed this rate as much as me. So many incredible songs I re-discovered / saw in a new light because of this!

  16. Re: The ULTIMATE J-Pop Queens Singles Rate, Part III: Koda Kumi (#9)

I approve of the winner, but I think I prefer But.

Ima Sugu Hoshii is better than at least 10 of the songs that beat it though so shame on you all and I hope Kuu pisses in your cereal.

  17. ^Haha love it!

I thought Ima Sugu Hoshii was going to be Top 10 for sure!
