The Winner's Gonna Take It All: The final...

Given the album tracks and non-global singles left in, Head Over Heels' departure seems right. It's no-match for the might of When All is Said and Done or The Visitors; As Good As New is that bop; and If It Wasn't for the Nights is revered for reasons slightly alien to me.

That said, I listened to HoH yesterday and did enjoy it more than usual for its theatrical elements. I stick by my 7 though.

I prefer HOH to Fernando, Dancing Queen, The Day Before You Came and Waterloo, so it's unlikely you'll get any sense out of me!

Voulez-Vous loses its opening track at #23 in the form of the disco-stringy As Good As New. The Agnetha-lead track was written and recorded in early 1979 as one of the last songs to be completed for the album that was to come out in March that same year.
While the rest of the world received I Have a Dream as the a-side single with As Good As New being its b-side, the opposite was released in Bolivia, Argentina and Mexico, where As Good As New became fucking huge, becoming ABBA's ninth and final number one hit over there.

Poor us, eh.

I've always loved the song, though I think as far as disco-tastic numbers go, there's better on the album. The production is fantastic as it fuses so many genres together, going from disco, funk, classical, rock and pop and Agnetha gives us a fantastic performance with lots of attitude, so I can't really fault the song at all, can I?

To bichard it's "One of their finest album tracks. A lot of them appear on this album to be fair. A Mexican single apparently, but could have equally been a big hit in the UK as well. In fact, I think the main reason that ABBA fans disagree with the single choices from Voulez-Vous is because more than any other other of their albums, so many songs could have been singles. An embarrassment of riches, as it were..." and VivaForever tells us "This is such an amazing song, and it's disgusting that it wasn't a single.". I"d say bichard's correct in saying that they were really spoiled with single choises for Voulez-Vous though.

Mikey1701 calls it "Ridiculous and camp, this must have been such a moment to hear back in the 1970s with that opening string section that gives way to a funk melody. This is a world away from Ring Ring and Waterloo and so much stronger for it. The funk overtones in the verses work well with the string led chorus and that key change is transcendent. Is this one of my favourite ABBA moments? It may very well be." and to kalonite it's a "Great disco-funk-pop opener to the album. I like this a lot.", yet poor ol' Sprockrooster isn't quite as convinced in its album opener-status, thinking it's "Not as strong as their other album openers, but it definitely sets the tone and mood for this album. Loving the 'MaMaMaMa's' in the chorus.".

Hudweiser mentions the same little section in his summary, going "Strings and disco blips, Agnetha's crisp vocals, 'ma ma ma ma ma ma ma ma ma', hand claps, a key change." and ending it with "Nothing in this song is anything short of orgasmic.", with P'nutbutter reaching this same kind of 'orgasmic' when screaming "AHHHHHHHH *spins*". Yath, sis. DO YOU!

Meanwhile constantino goes all Michelle_fingerclicking_air.gif on us with "C’mon strings! C’mon disco! There’s a real sense of grandeur and elegance about this track, which I adore." and SecretsOfFatima simply states "Agnetha serving queen of feistiness.". She does indeed give us an attitude-filled performance, which is something I've always felt she kinda lacked on others...

Mina is of the opinion that the song sounds a little like muzak and tells us "The lyrics and vocal delivery are great; I'm just thrown off by the backing music (much of which reminds me of elevator music).". Sis, what kind of elevators do you actually frequent? Seriously, tell me, I'm packing my bags as we speak...

TrueBeliever calls it "Funky and joyous, yet somehow imbued with a classical sound, with fabulous vocals from Agnetha. It lends itself to a possible orchestral production.", with CasperFan kinda sighing? "ABBA go disco- thankfully. Brilliant violin opening, a disco beat kicks in, great vocals and a chorus that is reminiscent of a disco Mamma Mia.". I think it reminds you of Mamma Mia, because the vocal production they used on the harmonies for their 1975 classic is practically the same here.

While Filippa simply states it's a "Lovely song.", idratherjack considers it "One of my best discoveries of the rate, that chorus is undeniable.". And while ufint isn't nearly as impressed as you lot, saying "It's ABBA-lite. It's typical ABBA, but not their best at all.", for tylerc904 it's "Such a cute little song. Optimistic, upbeat, and catchy as all hell. Aggy’s very brief middle-8 is a highlight.". You'd die when hearing me trying to imitate it in the car........ No seriously, that note sounds horrific when I try it.

We'll end with WhatKindOfKylie? who gushes "What an opener to what is my personal favourite ABBA studio album! Not quite as Disco as the rest of the record, with its brilliant fusion of pure pop, rock and classical as well as Disco. Brilliant chrous, brilliant vocals (as per!) and a superb key change in that last chorus, before it comes to a halt, leaving you wanting more. And to put it on again straight after!".

As Good As New is phenomenal. Imagine not being a massive ABBA fan and buying I Have A Dream then finding this on the b-side. You'd be convinced it'd been pressed wrong, wouldn't you?

Anyway, speaking of Voulez-Vous singles, I'd have gone for:

1. If It Wasn't For The Nights (as originally planned)
2. Angeleyes/Voulez-Vous
3. Chiquitita
4. As Good As New
5. Kisses Of Fire

I agree with the Voulez-Vous singles options. Frida is a queen but the run should have been the slew of incredible Agnetha tracks. I love Lovers and King Has Lost His Crown almost as much, but they aren't singles.
