The Workplace & Job Hunting

I feel silly for bringing this up as it's probably nothing, but this place feels anonymous enough to get this off my chest.

I don't know if any of you guys have awkwardness around straight men you work with sometimes?
Like weird questions being asked or sometimes they overshare or get the 'banter' wrong and you're left a bit like 'huh?'

There's 2 guys in my department where it's been awkward on work night outs sometimes. 1 guy, a group of us were talking about something and I mentioned an ex-boyfriend. When we were alone he told me he had a gay phase, but was over it now. It was innocent enough, but I was still puzzled why he mentioned it?

There's another guy where a few times he's asked peculiar questions or made banter-y jokes that feel like they go a little too far? Or not something he'd say to the other guys we work with. One time on a night out, a guy bumped into me, said sorry, etc. He was black. The co-worker saw it happen and then out of the blue asked if I'd ever been with a black guy. More recently, we were doing something on Teams and I was waffling on about my new earphones and said they felt odd because they made it feel like he was inside my head somehow... and he joked 'is that how you like me, me inside you?' - I think I actually gasped. I quickly moved on and asked something about a pivot table.

It's just a weird vibe I get sometimes, but maybe I'm just reading too much into it.

No you're not reading too much into it, this is gross - but sadly not uncommon - straight male behaviour. Whether you want to do anything about it is another matter.

Does anyone else get slightly anxious about Christmas work parties? I always find it a bit weird socialising with workmates, and seeing how differently people act outside work, especially with alcohol involved.
I get a bit anxious since I don't drink, so am aware of what's going on as the night wears on!

I used to be self conscious about dancing but I as get older, I don't care now. I am owning my crap dancing!

My work colleagues are all great, but I fucking hate clients lately - they're so entitled and ungrateful. You can drop everything to fix a problem that they claim is the end of the world and all you get is a confirmation it works "and next fix this!"

I really miss work Christmas parties now I'm mostly remote with 85% of my colleagues an ocean away.

My boyfriend's company parties were deranged though. One year, the receptionist was crying to her gay work husband about her boyfriend's behaviour, when gay work husband's own boyfriend was blowing him in the bathroom about three meters away.

I danced with the big boss one time and she told me she was planning on shagging one of her delegates as soon as the song was done.

This sounds great where does he work

A now-liquidated IT company, famed locally in our minds for the sales manager who was being paid the equivalent of £200k selling absolutely nothing one year, excusing it with "I was so focused on selling that I couldn't sell", and still not being fired.

I get anxious being a manager to many and wanting my staff to relax at ours. I work a drive away, so I always drive to mine since I've been at this store, or work the late and pop in for one after.
Show my face, say hi, depart...

Though if I get invited to a private party, like a birthday, I make sure I can have a drink and a laugh, as it's different.

Every work party I've been to I've shown my face for an hour or two, had a few drinks from the free bar, took advantage of the free food, but I always have plans to meet friends out after at a different place where I then let loose ddd

I love a free bar but I can not be trusted around the hands that feed me when I'm drunk. "I just think it's funny that the company does this-", "What do you think of Janet? Because I actually think-" NOPE get me the hell out of there

I'm being packed off two a couple of industry conference/expo events in London over the next few weeks because the org I work for won't hire people to do that job, so they pluck schmucks out of technical departments instead.

But the hot sales guy is coming over from the US so I may at least have some serious eye candy.

I made it clear that I would fail to sell water to someone who was on fire, so I think I just have to stand around doing teeth n' tits.

The one thing a lot of people don't get is that work parties are still work.
Can I just say, my longest and most glorious career stretch was at a chronically alcoholic company where you absolutely were expected to get shitfaced, people were expected to be messy and fuck each other in the free hotel room, and the owner's mom flashed everyone while doing karaoke with the owner at 1:30am. Everyone legitimately cared about each other, too, which is WILD to recall now. Quite possibly the only company that really was like a family... before it got sold and turned into an extremely toxic place dd. Venture capitalists RUIN EVERYTHING.

I fully expect to never be in such a position ever again, alcohol is a real fuck now, etc. But God it was nice while it lasted.
