The Workplace & Job Hunting

Congratulations Solenciennes!

I started back at my old job after getting fired from the gig I left them for and things have been amazing but the pink cloud just ended. My former assistant took up my post after I quit and kicked ass, got a raise, he's one of those rare good people so I'm super proud of him. Well I come back as a part-timer with a limited scope because of budget constraints, aka cheap boss. And they now just pulled my former assistant into the big boss's office and told him to accept a 50% pay cut or resign??? I literally can't with them. So now we're on the fast track to being swamped 24/7 with zero morale, and I'm in the process of declaring bankruptcy and my mental fortitude is very weak so I'm really not wanting to go hunting for a different gig. I'm comfortable here, I love the people for the most part, but this underhanded shit from the C-suite has left a bitter vibe in what's left of my department.

Your boss when you’re on a Zoom and they spot your medicinal Espresso Martini in the background.

I'm laughing but I also am not quite sure what a medicinal Espresso Martini is! It sounds lovely. War flashbacks to the time I ran out of mixers so I drank orange vodka and coffee all night until sunrise and proceeded to enter the twilight zone when I couldn't sleep.

An espresso martini is a cocktail made with coffee, I love them. It was for medicinal purposes i.e. work stress.

"The Espresso Martini can be found on p250 of Nigella's book Christmas. It is a mixture of cool espresso coffee, coffee liqueur, caramel vodka or butterscotch schnapps and regular vodka."

I’m at a crossroads with my career. I was presented an opportunity which is the traditional next step in my career, however I’ve made it clear to my managers for years that this direction isn’t where I see myself. I rejected the opportunity and have been told they can’t create something more in line with what I want, which meant that I unintentionally resigned from my position.

I’m exploring other options within the company and I’ve been thinking of a career change but I’m really not sure *exactly* what I want to do. I’m terrified with what’s going to happen but have also haven’t felt this excited in a long time.

Has anyone here been in a similar situation? How did you navigate it?

Has anyone got any advice on how to find a decent work from home job?

I just recently moved home and my family live in the middle of nowhere basically, so most jobs would require travel by car and I would rather try and find something from home right now and save on petrol.

Problem is on Indeed etc, even if I search for remote jobs, its usually remote in (insert city here) and I'm struggling to find jobs that I could apply for as it seems I need to be in the same city. Does anyone know of a way I can search for remote jobs that can be done from any city, without having to be in the same city of the company please? I'm in the UK so I've been using indeed mostly, and I've looked a little on Linkedin Too.

Apple were advertising entirely remote jobs a while back. Not sure if that’s still the case but it’s worth checking out.

One good thing that came from the Covid pandemic was that it reset traditional ways of working from one fixed location. I don’t get why more employers don’t encourage remote working if it suits the employee.

Thanks, I had a look but there doesn't seem to be anything on there now.

You're right though, it makes sense for a lot of companies to allow their staff to work from home.

Not right now, I was working in the fitness industry for years and I've just quit my job and moved back home (due to stress and breakup etc). So I don't really have any other 'skills' I guess for specific jobs, and I'm taking this time to really think about what I want to do next as I think I'm done with the fitness industry now.

I was thinking working in social media could be fun, like for a company or something but I need to actually look into it, and see what I need to have in terms of experience and skills.

Basically for now I just need some money and it would be perfect to have a remote job. I did work for Universal Credit during the lockdown and it was awful, so although phone calls are fine, I would rather it wasn't the type of call that is 99% going to be a complaint or worse.

^ I'm in a similar position myself right now and it's really frustrating. I've been living and teaching in Spain for many years but decided to take a year out as much as I love it there to just take care of my mental health after a lot of problems and struggling to get through the school year since co-vid.

I'm now in the position where I plan on going back in August/September but need to work and save up until then, but would rather work remotely as to not deal with a social environment ddd.

If it’s advertised as remote, I expect you’ll probably still be fine to apply and do the job from anywhere. My company advertises for London and Bristol all the time, but we’ve got colleagues from all around the country. Worth contacting the recruiter and asking.

This is similar to us. I'm in the civil service and we only advertise for Leeds and London because that's where our office bases are. You've just got to be prepared for occasional travel (how occasional depends on the post).

Has anyone else developed a weird hatred of working from home?

I get nothing done and actually become sort of resentful that work has managed to encroach on my home/personal life.

I've compromised with myself by trying to get into the office 3-4 times a week but it feels like a halfway solution.

Basically I have no self-control nn
It’s so quiet in the office most of the time that I can get almost as distracted as I do at home. Hate both.

I hate working from home, and I also hate that it’s so easy to do.

I literally... COVID basically opened the floodgates to the worst aspects of being me.

Am I the only one who finds hot-desking so anxiety inducing?

My work previously had a set up where everyone had their own desks but obviously with the pandemic the whole company moved to hot-desking. I find myself getting in early every day just to get a desk that I know works for me (including set up and chair). I find it so poor for my mental health (I get anxious walking into work thinking about it) but also what about people with health conditions who require a specific set up? That doesn't really seem to be taken into account.

It's also quite an unfair system as the managers expect to have their same desks each day but everyone else is left to battle it out. Some days we don't have enough desks for everyone in the team, which is ridiculous. All of this has been fed back to higher management and no action taken at the moment.

Apologies, rant over. Wondering if anyone else feels the same?

At my work people who have a desk assessment and get a specific set up are able to use the same desk. That’s the best way of dealing with that I think.

We’re only expected in twice a week and they’re not even monitoring that really so there’s always enough space.
