From a 'Let's try and even attempt to make entertaining telly' - this week, editorially, was a disaster. The viewing public had to wade in and give a totally unexpected vote just to lift it to 'interesting'.
Mariah week might work in the states, but here? A wholeevening of her songs on British telly? No.
It was when we were half way through, and one of the people I was watching with (my age, 22, and yes into all kinds of music) turned to me and said 'I haven't recognised one song yet'.
The thing is, that shows like Pop Idol and X Factor have forced certain artists, unexplicably and quite artificially, into the pop music canon - simply because that happens to be the kind of music Simon Cowell likes. In particular Mariah and Whitney. Both brilliant artists in their own right - but the best example of a 'Pop Idol' or someone with the 'X Factor'? Artists whose back catalogues can sustain over an hour on the most popular talent show in the country? Clearly not...
Not to mention the MASSIVE elephant in the room - that Mariah's performances, the ones of 'such a high standard' the contestants were trying to live up to - were terrible, both vocally and in terms of trying to create any kind of performance what-so-ever.
But last year, when Kylie was on, who arguably has MANY more recognisable UK hits than Mariah and managed to outsing last years winner in a duet, we didn't see a week of Kylie material - so why so with Mariah?
All in all, in terms of tedium and strength of performances it was the worst week yet.
The result was great though. Laura's VT worried me. "All I've ever wanted is for Simon Cowell to hear me sing" Really love, that's you life ambition? It dawned onme that she is of a generation of young singers that have grown up hanging on Simon Cowell's every word and have been sold, hook, line and sinker the fallacy that he has any clue what he's talking about.
After her second bad comment from Simon in a row - you could tell she'd given up, like his opinion was all that mattered. She needs to get out of the kitchen fast...
Ruth has zero respect for Simon (why should she? All he talks about is that she's Spanish and she has tits) and that's why I love her. And of course that she is an incredibly charasmatic performer.
