Thanks @jtm and @londonrain - so tempted to buy the DVD! One of my biggest regrets is never seeing Darren live.

While the live songs are great, the documentary is what really makes that DVD worth it. It's about the Spin tour and how he suddenly realizes that he can't sell out the same venues he used to with Savage Garden. And throughout the film there's an interview with him years later commenting on the tour and his sudden decline in popularity with some distance. It's really not only a great Darren documentary but also a great pop music documentary as well.

I Wish U Heaven
Bonus track from ‘Spin’
Average: 4,86
Highest score: 1x8,5 (@rawkey)
Lowest score: 1x1 (@jtm)

And here we go with the second cover version in a row. And again Wikipedia says: ‘Available as a bonus track on the UK Collector's Edition of "Spin", cover of the Prince original. The recording only lasts 2:14, and only includes up to the second chorus of the song.’

What’s with all that only recording short versions of other songs? Was it a desperate attempt to sell some more copies of the album with a re-release? (Yes, it probably was.) And, on top of it all, both of these songs were apparently produced by Walter Afanasieff, which couldn’t have come cheap.

Note to Darren: Please stop screeching, @Sprockrooster can’t take it anymore:

@londonrain: ‘Nice but feels so much like a demo. With some proper production I might have loved this more.’ (3)

@rawkey: ‘The Prince original is brilliant and this is a lovely little cover.’ (8.5)

@Sprockrooster: ‘Muffy sis, the screech vocals’ (3)

@Eric: ‘My tastes are generally basic and trashy so I don't know the original. I do like his vocal but not finding a strong emotional connection- sorry to any Prince fans!’ (6.6)

@jtm: ‘I don't like the song, I don't like the vocals.. nope.’ (1)

Here’s two minutes of a random Prince song:

Let’s hear Prince as well:

Scream at my similar commentary going back to back sort of. But yes... some of those songs and it's vocals do the absolute most in the wrong way.

And I voted for everything for completion issues but also partly as I did not want the We Are Mug stans to come and and raddle behind it. Well where are those if I am the highest scorer with a 7?! I guess there are none. However I scored a song a 9,0! So if @londonrain did not rate that low either it might have a shot at doing rather well in comparison and be top 100.

I for one am glad this managed to be more 10 voters. The choice of an optional helped a lot there. I feel proud about her niche clique here.

Thanks!

That's quite a mix of voters, so I really have no idea what the top ten is going to consist of. Fingers crossed that Affirmation will do better than Savage Garden and the later two solo albums will outlast the first two!
Especially Savage Garden plays a weird role for me. I am expecting several This Delicate Thing We've Made tracks in the top 10 but I can also see neither of them winning. Cause what is the clear winner there? Also enforced by some people not being fan of the era. I always thought being a Darren Hayes fan equalled being a massive This Delicate Thing We've Made. My immense love for that clearly clouded my judgement there.

This lack of appreciation for Tension and the Spark, my favorite album of all time!

Delicate is difficult for me. I like half of it and think it's some of the best songs he's ever done. The other half... not so much.

Since we're already talking about these two eras, let me quickly get rid of one of the songs from them..

Strange Magic
Bonus track from the ‘The Tension and the Spark’ era
Average: 4,875
Highest score: 1x9 (@CorgiCorgiCorgi)
Lowest score: 1x1 (@rawkey)

Well what do we have here – another cover version. This time it’s a song by Electric Light Orchestra and ‘recorded for the "Ella Enchanted O.S.T" in 2004 just prior to the release of the album as a favour to Tommy O'Haver for directing the "Strange Relationship" music video from the Spin album’.

This is a very weird song also to include in the rate ddd. Let’s hear what you all had to say:

@londonrain: ‘This is VERY “cartoon movie soundtrack”, which is appropriate.’ (5)

@rawkey: ‘A hard pass.’ (1)

@Eric: ‘Doesn't really go anywhere…’ (4)

@jtm: ‘From the first few seconds you know this is not going to go well. Probably one of the more random and weakest entries in Darren's oeuvre and something I honestly never bothered to listen to more than once before this rate.’ (3)

Here’s another Darren slide show with some music:

And of course the original version to keep this complete:

We are firmly back into original material next now that we have left the lesser cover versions behind us. And at this pace we will see the first song of the mandatory part of the rate leave by tomorrow or the weekend. And a single.

Well, in very small rates I have done it plenty of times for some reason. Twice to @Eric Generic. But since we pretty much aligned on We Are Smug I would be shocked if it turned out to be your 11. It fits there in sound.
There's a single that sounds like We Are Smug?

Fire Inside The Man
B-side from ‘Savage Garden’ era
Average: 5,03
Highest score: 1x7 (@CorgiCorgiCorgi)
Lowest score: 1x0,5 (@jtm)

Here we go with the first elimination from the ‘Savage Garden’ debut album era. This song was originally a b-side to ‘I Want You’, so it was on their first ever release. And now is one of the first tracks to leave. In a way it’s bit depressing to know that thousands of people own this song on a CD single and have listened to it, while later much better songs by Darren have not really found a big audience.

Despite sounding like it and the fact that it would fit in the current order of eliminations, this is not a cover but a Daniel Jones / Darren Hayes original. Just not one of the more beloved ones.

@londonrain: ‘This has to be a cover, right? It’s cute but it feels like a pale imitation of a much older song.’ (6.5)

@rawkey: ‘Love the intro, but it immediately goes downhill once the vocals begin and reveal that it's a super-basic song.’ (2.5)

@Eric: ‘Like I Bet He was Cool, doesn't really feel like a Savage Garden song but it has an innocent kind of sweetness to it.’ (6.5)

@jtm: ‘This is even worse than I'll Bet He Was Cool..’ (0.5)

Here’s we go if you want to revisit:
