Spin is.. well, Spin. Tension is very electro / minimal. Delicate is flamboyant and all over the place. Secret Codes is very straightforward pop. I was VERY surprised by the scores it got but if you think about it it actually makes sense. From the comments people like either Tension or Delicate the most and sometimes not so much the other one of the two (especially the ‚lesser‘ album tracks - if we can even call them that), but everyone apparently quite likes Secret Codes. It‘s just very easy to listen to.

I knew I had underscored Dublin Sky. I guess it’s not as immediate as the other tracks on the album but still better than most of Secret Codes.

You’ve all overrated the last album. Why?

Yeah, Dublin Sky was, for me, definitely the hardest track on Tension to get into. I guess others felt the same way? It grew on me over the years, though.

Secret Codes easily feels like the most middling and the least essential (and therefore the least divisive?) album in the rate. It’s not that I don’t like it, but it was the first album without any real surprises on it. My own scores for it were neither very high nor very low, so I’m sure I haven’t tanked it, but since we’re losing so many better songs from the other albums we really should be calling for its head now.

Tears of Pearls is great.

Dublin Sky
Album track from ‘The Tension and the Spark’
Average: 7,53
Highest score: 1x11 (@rawkey), 2x10 (@Eric, @jtm)
Lowest score: 4x6 (@londonrain, @berserkboi, @CorgiCorgiCorgi, @funkyg), 1x6,3 (@phoenix123)

Let’s hand over to poor @rawkey first: 'No contest. The lyrics are among his best - the devastating realisation that the other person in your relationship is just not into it. It was my go to song when that very thing happened to me!’ (11)

Whaaat is wrong with you people? I thought this was going to be top 10 for sure. But no.. ‘So Beautiful’ was not enough. You had to get this ballad out as well. @rawkey If it’s any consolation this was also a candidate for my 11. Not that it would have helped..

Darren: “First song I ever wrote on my own. Sat down with a guitar in Dublin one day and howled deep from my heart about my woes. It's entirely literal. I was at a crossroads and sensing the end of a relationship that I didn't want to let go of. I put the song on the shelf for a while and I guess like some self fulfilling prophecy, a year later the relationship I was in ended abruptly and the song became the first reflection of the experience. Going back to Dublin one night, the experience came full circle and I was able to finish the song from the two perspectives.... the first as some kind of premonition and the second from the point of view of the aftermath. Both experiences in Dublin had been brought together in one song. It's a song about loss, and regret.. of sentiment and all the things we should have done”, adding: “Also I hate everyone who gave this lower than 9. You don’t deserve my music.”

Your comments:

@londonrain: ‘Drags a bit but it’s nice enough.’ (6)

@berserkboi: ‘Okay’ (6)

@Eric: ‘Take my heart on a silver platter please… raw and works on two levels as a breakup / romantic ballad but also again captures the isolation of depression for me (in that first verse in particular)...’ (10)

@jtm: ‘This used to be my favorite song of the album for so long (I think I prefer the first two tracks now) and I never understood why this was not a single. It's still such a great song with amazing lyrics. The 'they sent you all the way..' part and the end really are something special.’ (10)

The Tuning of Violins
Album track from ‘This Delicate Thing We’ve Made’
Average: 7,546
Highest score: 2x10 (@phoenix123, @marie_05)
Lowest score: 1x2,5 (@jtm)

Oops. Not me being by far the lowest scorer on this after having complained about unfair eliminations the whole week. And I still don’t remember how this song goes even though I know almost every other song in the discography by heart.

Anyway, this brings down the number of songs on side 2 of Delicate to three. Let’s hope they stay around for a bit.

Comments:

@londonrain: ‘Gorgeous. I love the reference to bluebells and Blackheath!’ (8)

@berserkboi: ‘Beautiful!’ (8)

@rawkey: ‘A strong way to finish the album.’ (8.2)

@Sprockrooster: ‘I always forget how this goes. But when I hear it I am overjoyed. After so much pain this fluffy ending in lyrics and upbeat melody is the perfect cure to end this album full of emotions.’ (9)

@Eric: ‘I moved to London shortly after this album came out so this has major nostalgia. This is a perfect album ending.’ (9)

@jtm: ‘A disappointing ending to a meandering mess of an album’ (2.5)

I thought your earlier comment about The Tuning of Violins' meant its end was near. I love the reference to Notting Hill. It is incongruous to the rest of the album but for me it signals new beginnings and summer days on Hampstead Heath. I want to move back!

The Sun Is Always Blinding Me
Album track from ‘This Delicate Thing We’ve Made’
Average: 7,554
Highest score: 1x10 (@marie_05)
Lowest score: 1x5,9 (@jtm), 2x6 (@Robert, @Eric)

Unfortunately, we end the week with another cut from This Delicate We’ve Made, but this time it’s an album track from side 1 leaving. It’s also unfortunate that of all of Darren’s albums it’s Delicate that is the most difficult to find information about. I spent hours searching for song-specific interviews and commentary but to no avail. If anyone has a lead, let me know and I’ll update this and other posts with a bit more insight.

And sorry @marie_05 for today. Hopefully next week’s eliminations will be more to your taste. I’ll post the top 50 in a minute. For the moment I propose to continue with 2 eliminations a day as it works pretty well. Once we get to the top 20 or maybe top 10 I might switch to one song a day. Let’s see when we get there.

But first your verdict on ‘The Sun Is Always Blinding Me’:

@londonrain: ‘One of the most straightforward pop songs on a not very straightforward album.’ (7)

@berserkboi: ‘Very enjoyable!’ (9)

@Sprockrooster: ‘An instant fave at the time, but it lost a bit of it's shine in time.’ (8)

@jtm: ‘This was the biggest let down from the previews which had the verse and the bridge but not the chorus. I was hoping for a massive chorus but then it was just.. okay. I never really liked the song after that.’ (5.9)

Listen here:

Next week: The song that was number 1 for quite some time early on in the rate leaves. And before we hit the top 40 we lose an album lead single!

Whenever I get tagged in this thread lately it’s because I’m the lowest scorer (sorry!). I felt like I gave out loads of 7+s though, so my ballot was hopefully fairly balanced out. Plus I guess it’s better (for me) that I’m being tagged for being the lowest scorer rather than the highest. I was sad to see Tears of Pearls go so soon though. I hope that album is left alone for a bit now.

I noticed that Tears of Pearls was the first time that album lost a song in almost 50 eliminations (since A Thousand Words at number 100), that‘s pretty nice. But I agree there‘s not much left that should go out before top 30/20.

Regarding lead singles I would consider I Knew I Loved You and On The Verge Of Something Wonderful the ‚official’ leads for their respective album.
