Sing To Me feels like the most vulnerable of the Delicate album tracks at the moment.

Poor Sing To Me.

Oh no, Sing To Me is legitimately one of the greatest tracks in this rate! I know that number 13 is great, but it did deserve a top 10 position. The classic hit that never was. That chorus is larger than life, it absolutely should have been a single.

OK I have caught up and read all 41 pages. Such lovely reading. It's been refreshing to read such detailed comments about a discography I know and love so well yet feels massively underappreciated (and actually a bit obscure?)

For someone that's never really been aware of how his music was rated by other fans, this has been really interesting. I personally so much prefer the eccentricities of The Tension and the Spark and This Delicate Thing We've Made to Spin and Secret Codes and Battleships- although as I mentioned earlier I do adore the pure pop of Affirmation too so I do like a bit of everything! It has been a big surprise to see Secret Codes doing so well, there's not actually much on that album I go back to (the singles and Don't Give Up basically). I'm actually really pleased it has it's fans though, it's nice to know that his last album was so well received by some. I just can't believe songs like Taken By The Sea and Stupid Mistake outranked masterpieces like Dublin Sky, Unlovable and How To Build A Time Machine... But I guess that's the fun of these rates, right?!

If I may, my personal top 10 would probably be:

Affirmation
Like It Or Not
Darkness
I Like The Way
Dublin Sky
Who Would Have Thought
How To Build A Time Machine
Casey
On The Verge of Something Wonderful
The Tuning of Violins

Although I would possibly replace The Tuning of Violins with "I Want You" depending on my mood...

Can I also just ask, because I'm not over How To Build A Time Machine leaving at number 42... Does no one else think this bit alone is perfection in musical form:

"All the things I've lost
All the people I've hurt
All the times I lied
All the moments wasted
All I never did
All the dreams I had
All the things I would change
I can change them

All the things I've lost
All the people I've hurt
All the times I lied
All the moments wasted

I'm gonna make right
What I did wrong
And change how the future has gone
Through appliance of science
I'll take a hold of my enemies
Take their obscenities
Kiss them, and leave them like lovers who've gone
I'll call my dad
I'll tell him I miss him
And tell my reflection: 'it's not your fault'
And now the moment has come
I'm traveling back in time"

The first six of your 10 favorites are also in my top 10. That taste! Too bad you couldn‘t vote but I‘m very happy to have you here for the rest of the reveals.

Today‘s elimination coming up in a few hours. It might be upsetting to a lot of people.

Casey
Third single from ‘This Delicate Thing We’ve Made’
Average: 8,78
Highest score: 6x10 (@phoenix123, @londonrain, @Untouchable Ace, @berserkboi, @marie_05, @Sprockrooster)
Lowest score: 1x5 (@jtm)

Soooo… it was nice doing this rate with y’all. I’ll send for my things. (But if it helps: My score did not make much of an impact on the eventual placement of this song.)

‘Casey’ was released as the third and final single from Delicate. A radio edit, a video and some live / instrumental versions were produced, but the song didn’t exactly set the charts on fire, peaking at 108 in the UK. Since the singles also didn’t move the album sales much and the whole project was self-financed by Darren, he understandably stopped releasing singles afterwards, a bit short of the original goal of releasing many more of the songs.

@londonrain: ‘The story behind this is great, but this is also an excellent song in its own right. I don’t usually have tons of patience for songs over five minutes long, but this works for me in part because it’s basically two songs in one. That chorus is probably the most sing-along chorus on the whole album and I love it. “CAY-SEH, WHEN YOU GO!”’ (10)

@berserkboi: ‘Gorgeous! Wow!’ (10)

@CorgiCorgiCorgi: ‘Love the production on this one!’ (9)

@rawkey: ‘Suffers by its position on the track list (when I really want a non-time travel related palette cleanser) but at least it stands up in it's own right and builds gloriously.’ (9.4)

@Sprockrooster: ‘At the time I was completely mesmerized by it's music video. Still a neat but a simple concept. Not sure if this was the right single to release then, but it surely helped to make this track standout that would have easily been washed over by all the great tracks surrounding it.’ (10)

@Eric: ‘Love this, feels very autobiographical.’ (8.5)

@jtm: ‘I don't want to be too harsh as this seems to be a favorite of others, but I really don't connect to this song and melodically it underdelivers like a few other songs on Delicate do. The Delicate singles were really weird decisions to be honest.’ (5)

Wow, the Delicate hate is real, huh, @jtm?

Poor Casey. I honestly thought it had a shot at the top ten.

Let me quickly light some candles for On The Verge Of Something Wonderful and my 11.

Noo I love Delicate. I just seem to like different songs on it than everyone else and I’m not moved at all by the three time machiney songs on side 1. If you noticed we shared a 10 yesterday.

I literally cannot believe anyone- never mind the person dedicated enough to run this- would rank Casey as a 5!! That bit near the end - "She's coming to get me, she's coming to rescue me" surely makes it at least a 9 for anyone?!

Well my 11 went out top 60 so clearly I‘m not in the majority. But yes, I don‘t particularly like this, not even the lyrics that much. And I‘m easily moved by Darren‘s lyrics usually.

On the Verge of Something Wonderful
First single from ‘This Delicate Thing We’ve Made’
Average: 8,83
Highest score: 6x10 (@phoenix123, @Robert, @londonrain, @CorgiCorgiCorgi, @marie_05, @Sprockrooster)
Lowest score: 2x6,5 (@berserkboi, @jtm)

Released as the official first single off Delicate, Darren made an elaborate music video for this which got quite an amount of airplay at the time. The single was released in a bunch of digital and physical formats (even a DVD single!). It charted in the top 20 in the UK (his final top 40 hit there) at number 20 and in the top 30 in Australia.

I remember listening to the whole UK chart show that Sunday thinking / hoping it would go at least top 10, but sadly it didn’t work out.

@londonrain: ‘I love the concept of being on the verge of something wonderful. It’s given me hope on days when I really haven’t felt much hope. Darren’s falsetto on the pre-chorus builds momentum into that sublime chorus, and there isn’t a thing I’d change about that production.’ (10)

@berserkboi: ‘Very nice, but a bit empty against the greatness of this album’ (6.5)

@Sprockrooster: ‘I overkilled this so quickly during the release I am actually surprised I am still loving it to this day.’ (10)

@Eric: ‘Joyous and a soaring chorus.’ (9)

@jtm: ‘This is actually better than I remembered. I haven't listened to this in years because I think I overplayed it a little for a while. It's not exactly what I would have chosen as the lead single, but it's certainly the best one of the singles he did release from the album.’ (6.5)
