Bloodstained Heart
Second single from ‘Secret Codes and Battleships’
Average: 9,36
Highest score: 1x11 (@Remorque), 5x10 (@phoenix123, @berserkboi, @funkyg, @Eric, @jtm)
Lowest score: 2x8 (@londonrain, @Sprockrooster), 1x8,3 (@Untouchable Ace)

Calm down everyone, it’s not going to be a fully Secret Codes top 3! The first of those three singles to leave is ‘Bloodstained Heart’. It’s the 11 of @Remorque who will surely explain this excellent choice in the thread.

‘Bloodstained Heart’ was released as the second single in Australia (due to a performance slot on X Factor and it being used in the X Factor promos) as well as the third single in the UK, where it got quite some airplay on radio 2. It charted lowly, as expected, but certainly contributed to the album promotion.

It’s not only part of maybe the best singles run in Darren’s solo career but the Bloodstained Heart EP is an excellent release in and of itself.

But let’s hear from the rest of you:

@londonrain: ‘My husband absolutely adores this one. I really like it but it says a lot about the standard of the album that I think this is the weakest single from it.’ (8)

@berserkboi: ‘Another stunning discovery!’ (10)

@Sprockrooster: ‘A strong sounding ballad with great vocals was exactly what I needed at this point in the album. To bad it's lyrics are a bit of a kii. You hit me like a subwaytrain. I mean is there a depth to that compared to a regular train?’ (8)

@Eric: ‘I will try and give a score less than 10 on this album, promise. The love behind the lyrics is just beautiful.’ (10)

@jtm: ‘I have some of the lyrics on a picture made and signed by Darren that I won during the album promotion. Probably slightly biased because of this, but I just love this song, even though I usually don't much care for too much falsetto. This really should have been a bigger hit than it was, but it just wasn't possible at that point anymore and definitely not because he didn't try. Because he really went full Savage Garden here and in a good way!’ (10)

Music video:

Awww what would have been my 11 has gone.

And this is it. The one I had a little cry to. However it was far from in the privacy of my home.

I was in the middle of the floor area at the O2 Academy in Liverpool watching Darren do his thing.

I'd always loved this song and I was having a bit of a shit time. My mum had recently got really ill and hearing this live it just hit me like a subway train (wink at camera) and I was just in the middle of the floor and cried. Everyone was dancing away and I am just stood there in floods of tears. Had my little moment and then carried on with a bit of a dance.

What a song!

Black Out The Sun
Third single from ‘Secret Codes and Battleships’
Average: 9,38
Highest score: 1x11 (@londonrain), 6x10 (@Remorque, @phoenix123, @Untouchable Ace, @berserkboi, @CorgiCorgiCorgi, @Eric)
Lowest score: 1x7,5 (@Sprockrooster)

While I understand that people didn’t want Secret Codes to provide the full top 3, I’m very annoyed to see ‘Black Out The Sun’ go out at number 4. This has once again become a massive favorite of mine and I think I would now award it my 11. Thankfully, @londonrain did that for me, and we’ll hear more about that right away.

‘Black Out The Sun’ was released as the second single in UK (and third in Australia). This was at a point where Darren wasn’t able to score massive hits anymore but got decent airplay on radio (even in some European countries outside UK – I once heard this on the radio in Switzerland which is incredible for an independent artist that doesn’t officially have a label there).

Let’s hear from @londonrain first:

“One of my favourite songs of all time. The orchestral mix of this added a nice spin to it, but the album version is amazing and I absolutely adore it.”

Now Darren:

And now the rest of us:

@berserkboi: ‘This was an instant one!’ (10)

@CorgiCorgiCorgi: ‘I love this. It's so dramatic’ (10)

@Sprockrooster: ‘The only thing saving this track is the middle-8 and the heavy feature of a guitar-solo and his dramatic adlibs.’ (7.5) [Sprocky, honey.. the lack of taste!]

@Eric: ‘If we had an 11 per album this would be the one for me. He does heartbreak so, so, effectively.’ (10)

@jtm: ‘An attempt at a crowd-pleaser and hit single if ever there was one, and it works. This is so massive, and I remember playing the radio 2 show where it premiered over and over before the single release.’ (9.5)

The absolutely amazing music video:

Ouch.

I was expecting this to go with every elimination once we hit the top ten, so #4 isn’t bad. I honestly cannot with Sprocky’s commentary, though. Only he would cite a guitar solo as the saving grace of a song on forum dot popjustice dot com.

Hoping for a Step Into The Light win now.

To the moon and back deserves to be nowhere near the top 3.
Based on the complaints we've been hearing so far and the way the rest of the Savage Garden singles have been slaughtered, I'd be very surprised indeed if it won. I expect it to go next, followed by Talk Talk Talk.

Step Into The Light seems to be the only remaining song with no real detractors.

A wasteland of poison,
Sometimes all the words are unsaid.

By Sunday we‘ll know the winner. In the meantime, let me reveal some further results. If one of you is a mathematician / rocket scientist and is able to calculate the top 3 placings from this please keep quiet until Sunday.

Note that as with the album averages the following numbers are heavily influenced by the amount of b-sides and bonus tracks released.

Average by artist
1. Savage Garden 7,34
2. Darren Hayes 7,32
3. We Are Smug 5,44

Average by release
1. Single 8,02
2. Album track 7,3
3. Deluxe track 6,81
4. Unreleased/Demo 6,74
5. B-side 6,4

Well, I don’t think this would have been in my personal top 10, but Black Out The Sun is a pretty great song (I gave it a 9). It sounds massive and could have been huge in the hands of an artist who actually had a genuine shot at a hit (not that we ever wanted that, though?). It reminds me a bit of the Ryan Tedder hits of the late noughties except with a chorus that isn’t woefully underwritten.

Step Into The Light
Album track / promo single from ‘This Delicate Thing We’ve Made’
Average: 9,39
Highest score: 2x11 (@Sprockrooster, @Untouchable Ace), 5x10 (@londonrain, @berserkboi, @funkyg, @marie_05, @jtm)
Lowest score: 1x7 (@CorgiCorgiCorgi)

This would now have been my choice for number 1 as well. But the surprises are not over yet, and the final song from Delicate leaves at number 3 instead.

‘Step Into The Light’ was another promo single for Delicate, and from what I understand was mainly sent to DJs which helped it to the incredible number 5 on the US Dance chart (sorry, had to mention it). A short teaser was on Darren’s MySpace (those were the times) as well, but it never saw an official single release.

Let’s hear from the people who voted it their 11:

@Untouchable Ace: "My 11 would always come from This Delicate Thing We've Made. When scoring the album, this brooding and stratospheric bop emerged on top. It's the most accomplished of the bunch for me because of the way it builds and builds into a very controlled explosion. I like those moments in music and he does explore this other times throughout Delicate and We Are Smug. But nothing else comes close to this. "

@Sprockrooster: “There was no doubt this was going to be my 11. Darren Hayes carries that special emotional luggage within this song. Step Into The Light demands you to come out of the closet. Face that fear. And I did come out as a gay to my friends and family, when I didnot accepted it myself yet. This song was so important for me. After coming out I did have flings here and there with women, because I didnot want to see myself as gay. The chorus from Step Into The Light was so helpful as it made me deal with those emotions. "I just wanna be your friend, You know, I've never been in love before". Those relationships with woman were empty and not based on love, but on a different inner desire. Realising it wasnot love made me grow passed it. I needed to open myself for a relationship with a man. Step into that light and do not fear being bitten by it. Still so powerful to this day for me. Having anthems like 'Who Would Have Thought (It Would Be Amazing)' or 'On The Verge Of Something Wonderful' really made me a more confident person in the relationships with men. It really was amazing to explore the gay community as a new homosexual on the scene. I didnot get bitten as Darren promised me. And Darren shares this emotional and painful spotlight with 2 other songs. The first being Saint by Texas where I wrote this review here. Second is Frankie Goes To Hollywood, the Power of Love. Now we need to get that in a rate so I can throw my love behind that one too."

Very well said! And now the rest of us:

@londonrain: ‘What a way to open an album campaign. One of his absolute best. What a banger. What a mood.’ (10)

@berserkboi: ‘I adore this sort of thing, Darren’s storytelling ways against a synth-ish heavy instrumental!’ (10)

@Eric: ‘Very haunting - a metaphor for coming out maybe?’ (9)

@jtm: ‘And the album is back on track. I was massively excited for this song from the preview and it did deliver. One my favorite songs by Darren and sadly a promo single only.’ (10)
