Ladies and gentlemen (and any non-binary hunties out there), allow me to take you on a journey… The year is 2009 and I, a chubby music obsessive and avid NME reader living in South London, am perusing the iTunes app on my iPod Touch. As I’m scrolling through the ‘featured’ section I am struck by the angelic image of an ethereal goddess; she has fried bottle blonde hair with a 2007 side-fringe, pursed lips and a slightly masculine, yet striking, chin. It turns out I was staring at a future star by the name of Elena Jane Goulding, better known as Ellie Goulding. Naturally, curiosity lead me to purchase her EP, creatively titled 'Introduction to Ellie Goulding', essentially a collection of acoustic and live tracks. I listened this EP profusely in the hours following, in particular a track called ‘I Wish I Stayed’ and just like that, I was absolutely hooked. 7(!) years on and Ellie Goulding is one of the UK’s most recognizable pop stars, with 2 incredibly strong albums under her belt (and Delirium). I listened through her discography in preparation and it really dawned upon me how many BOPS she has crafted during her career, and how strong a debut Lights was and how incredible an artistic achievement Halcyon was, especially considering its commercial success. I hope the mixed response to Delirium won’t deter fans of her earlier work from participating, because it really isn’t that bad. Music aside, Ellie is low-key iconic; rumors of her being a sociopathic man-eater (queen), hilariously messy live TV performances, her recent anti-climate change activism (ha Hopelessness is COMING), dance moves that would embarrass Taylor and, of course, some epic gifs. Rules This is my first rate, so I'm just going to keep it simple: The typical scoring range remains (on a scale of 0-10, decimals allowed), plus one 11 for your favourite track. Troll scores (only if you give a ridiculous amount of zeros) will be discarded. But I will be fair because I know that some of these songs are…questionable. Commentary is highly encouraged if you want to give a track a 0-2 or a 10/11. Basically, if you want to give a song an ~extreme~ score, I trust that you at least have something to say about it. For example, if you really hate Burn, I want to know why, and if you live for Lights (Single Version), tell me why you love it. It can be just one word, or an essay, whatever you see fit. That’s a fair ask, right? If anyone seriously objects to this rule then PM me. It’s just a way of getting commentary for the more provocative songs. I got rid of most of the extras (there were like 20 or so, but I wanted to get to the meat of the rate quicker), if there is a certain song you feel is missing, let me know and I will add it. The voting closes on the 12th of December at 11.59PM GMT, reveals will then hopefully start the following day, the pace will be rapid (3 or so a day) until we get to the top 40, with the exception of singles, or songs I really like (kii). Oh and if you only like her first two albums, I encourage you to bite the bullet and put the Delirium songs on shuffle, because they are much better that way. Plus they really aren’t that bad. Happy Voting!
