Bad day for Tinie, huh?

Low-key this was a childhood fave of mine, it's just really darn catchy, isn't it? The production goes HARD, Tinie is going IN, Ellie's chorus pops OFF and the video is ridiculous and features Ellie as an actual rocket scientist. What's not to love? This is a fucking bop and you haters couldn't get to where this is on a full tank of petrol. Seriously though, y'all hate on Tinie like Pass Out isn't one of the best UK number 1s in chart history...

It was released as the 5th single from Tinie's HIGHLY successful debut album Disc-Overy back in 2011 (not as successful as Lights but let's not because he's having a tough day). The fact that this still managed to be a sizeable hit, peaking at #12, is pretty decent for a 5th single. I know I joke about Ellie's cameo in the hysterically camp music video, but her getting a full credit, feature in the video AND the single cover whilst poor Labrinth remained uncredited despite providing vocals for the track is a mini victory for our rising starlet, especially considering how 'hook-girls' get treated in the world of mainstream hip-hop/rap. To me this reads more like a collaboration between two friends who happen to be artists, which adds to its charm.

I'm sad to see this go but a 6.2 average is nothing to be ashamed of, and it remains a bop so whatever.

Consideration chucked this a mere 2 points ‘for the chorus’.

Yet again, kaushik (3) tries (and fails) to come for my competence as a host, the BEAST:

Originally, I didn't want to rate this song. It makes no sense. It isn't her song. It’s just a song that she is featured on. And even if you're considering songs that she is featured on, then why haven't you considered Powerful and Fall Into The Sky? Powerful would be an 8 and Fall Into The Sky a 5.

At least D.Jay (5) sees it as one of Ellie’s!

It is hardly one of her best.

Oh y’all wanted a twist? It’s Ellie’s crusty wig that Slice of Life (5) came for!

I appreciate Tinie Tempah here but we're rating Ellie here so I'm gonna focus on her part. And it's not super memorable. It could've been done by any other popstar.

Laura Vanderbooben gave this ‘a solid 6. I like Ellie’s part but Tinie is just so hit and miss for me’.

Well, within the context of his Ellie collabs they’re all a miss, let’s be real here.

Wow, ohnostalgia (6.5) had something fairly nice to say about this one, now that’s a wonder:

I do not hate this! It’s kinda fun.

Just when I was starting to lose hope, PJ’s very own wonderman DJHazey came through with a 9, allowing this to leave the rate with some dignity:

The most iconic part of this is that head-turn Elie does when her name is introduced in the video. Gif material right there. Also, is that her sounding like a cat at the end the chorus or some kind of vocoder effect? God, I hope it isn't her. Okay, so after a few listens I have to say the video-game production is actually kind of catchy and so is Ellie's part (even the cat-cry is turning out to be oddly acceptable) Kind of a guilty pleasure really. #Disc-Overy

By that point I was sitting on the bus frantically trying to finish my last commentary, so yeah that's all the nice things Tinie gets. I'm probably going to add the song to my Apple Music though.

Ellie just now finding out what y'all did to this BAWP.

But seriously the vocoder-effected vocals in the chorus sound like the mix between a sick cat and the 'pew-pew-pews' that we hear in every second of Rogue One. However, I've somehow managed to fall in love it all completely. It'll be on my December Chart.

Hanging On got booted before Wonderman? Seriously? This is outrageous!

There's nothing wrong with Tinie's rap on Hanging On. And I don't understand why people think the solo version is the "original" version. The single version came out first and is the original version and is definitely the superior one. The solo version on the album sounds empty in the middle-8.

Tinie's rap is the perfect contrast in every way - Ellie's ethereal vocals vs. Tinie's gritty and raw rap, the emotional delivery throughout the song vs. the angry rap, the lyrical content of the whole song vs. the lyrical content in the rap.. This version of Hanging On and the album version of Lights made me a fan of her music. Its a shame that nobody here shares my love for this song - I guess it just makes it more special to me then (my friends think the single version is better too).

@constantino - you didn't answer my question though. Why aren't Powerful and Fall Into The Sky in the rate? I genuinely don't understand how people rated Ellie's part in Wonderman with 10s when it is just a chorus repeat thrice - its basically non-existent in the song.

People not enjoying the duet original cover of Hanging On, and preferring the solo redo of the cover...

I DID NOT EXPECT THIS!

The difference in their respective performances throughout the scoring process was...surprising. It wasn't until the later stages that they started to get similar scores...

Time to loose our first Lights-era track...

Awww, I'm a bit upset about this one. What a lovely little track this is; it closes the Lights-era perfectly in my opinion, because it combines her acoustic roots with a light sprinkling of production flourishes during the chorus refrain (I believe their orchestral but I'm not quite sure). 'Because I'm making up for lost times' is such a gorgeous refrain and shows a level of purity and heart that Ellie has lost in a lot of her recent outings.

I gave this an 8 because it reminds me of the songs from her debut EP that got me hooked in the first place. There is no doubt that this is one of the weakest tracks from the Lights/Bright Lights era but I still really care for it. I know how Popjustice feels about acoustic music so I'm not surprised to see this miss the top 60.

The vocals are fine, Mikey1707 (4)...

tatianna_choices.gif. I can’t at these vocals or Ellie trying to cram as many lyrics into a melody.

Yes, ohnostalgia (5), you can always blame Ed Sheeran as far as I’m concerned:

Can I blame this on Ed Sheeran??? It's not awful by any means, it's just very beginner singer songwriter. Not particularly a vibe I think Ellie excels at.

Remyky22 (6) thinks it was ‘nothing special, but not bad’.

Hopefully the good sis Youtube converter will sort you out First2Run (7)...

Lovely, I wish that this was included on the version of the album that I have. It is indeed a nice little ending to a wonderfully pop-filled and quirky album.

Slice of Life (7.5) was pretty spot on; this is a cute little song and perfecltlymeets the expectation one would have of a Lights bonus track:

Cute, unassuming acoustic number. Kinda unmemorable but that's what you get if for being a bonus track. Her voice is gorgeous in here though, I'll give her that.

Always one to stick up for the little guy, DJHazey (8) lets us KNOW:

This really shouldn't be overlooked because the verses could be dismissed as boring at first (with reason), but "cos I'm making up fooor lost time" is a killer pop moment that should be adored by all.

Like always, I could count on D.Jay (8) to back me up:

So glad they decided to properly release this as this was one of Ellie’s first songs I heard doing the rounds on the blogs back in the day. Lyrically I relate a lot to this song a lot and I love how stripped back the whole thing is.

But here’s a twist: kaushik (9) loves it even more:

I like the lyrics a lot. I wish it wasn't acoustic. Generally, I don't have a problem with acoustic arrangements. This could have been another great tune with the right production. It loses 1 point only because its acoustic.

I have this version of The End named The End (Acoustic) and i have another one called The End (demo) which is the one with the electronic shit in it, which is the one that's officially released?
