JLS and One Direction certainly haven't sold that many singles in UK

I keep thinking about this (good god i need to get a life) but i don't see any way that One Direction have sold this many records. I'm no chart expert so maybe someone else can fill in the blanks. Most of my info comes from UK MIx forum which is pretty accurate.

They've only had 8 records in the UK top 10 and 2 of them were at No9, so we can discount them as big sellers

in 2011 they had 2 hits

WHAT MAKES YOU BEAUTIFUL - ONE DIRECTION 540,000
http://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/the-top-20-biggest-selling-singles-of-2011-revealed/

and Gotta Be You which got to number 3. I can't find sales but it debuted with 59,461 so it's not a massive seller

None of their 2012 releases were in the end of year top 40 which means they didn't sell anymore that 381k within the year

This year One Way or Another is their only record to be in YTD top 40 is

One Direction - One Way Or Another - 448,200

the other 2 haven't sold more than 267,500k

Of course there will be some overspill between years on some records and there could be some residual album track sales but how does this add up to 3.2 million ?

For example Alexandra has also released 8 singles, 2 are massive with sales of 1.3 million and 600k plus, 2 others that sold 300k + and another that spent 2 weeks at No1 (despite being low on sales) yet OD have apparently sold the same ?

It doesn't make sense

For some you're only counting what they've sold in that year not what they've sold to date so surely there are quite a few sales in that. Also, they might have included the X Factor charity singles.

I specifically said that there would be overspill between years but i don't where to find additional sales. It can't include charity singles as the figures are too low.

1D single sales:

What Makes You Beautiful: 855.000
Gotta Be You: 150.000
One Thing: 180.000

Live While We're Young: 300.000
Little Things: 415.000
Kiss You: 280.000
One Way or Another: 429.000

Best Song Ever: 188.000

These are the numbers I found online, I'm sure some of the figures for the older tracks aren't up to date, but this adds up to around 2.8 million. I could see them at 3 million, maybe not 3.2.

Thankyou

That makes some sense, though that WMYB managed to sell an additional 300k in 2012 is rather strange, considering it was released in Sep !!

Olly Murs will surely overtake Leona eventually. There have only been two weeks this year when he didn't have at least one single in the top 75.
