Top of the Pops BBC4 Thursday/Friday 7.30pm

  1. Completely agree, the C&C 7" mix would have been top 10, WEA really screwed up.

  2. Not to retell a story we all know but the issue was more (and quickly realised byA&M) that UK and US clubs were going in different directions. We were a melting pot of house, hiphop and soon to be ravey and indie. New Jack Swing / Swingbeat was the prevalent style in the US and so JJ needed two different big name remixers, CJ was the in demand mixer in summer 89. Shep hadnt had a big club hit in the UK since 1988.

As much as I love Shep and have all the Jap mix EPs from RN1814, he did finesse the dull shuffly house mix to death in that era, CJs still sound fresh and different to me (Alright, House Mix being an example).

  3. "Little Bird", though.

  4. And Love Song For A Vampire.

  5. Top of the pops missed a trick. They could have got 2 for the price of 1, while Black Box were in the studio, they could have got Starlight to perform Numero Uno complete with bad miming from Katrin

  6. TOTPs weren't ride on time for that one...

  7. I'm probably in the minority here but I much prefer Numero Uno to Ride on Time, it's just so much more happier and more dancey

  8. Love them both but they're almost echoes of what made Annie special. Sublime though.

    Hairycub1969 and Uffbangwallop like this.
  9. I adore Don't Ask Me Why, King & Queen Of America and Angel. It's just a shame the run of singles started out with this.

  10. Revival's not on either Eurythmics compilation, quite tellingly.

  15. I didn't expect Liza to top your chart?!

Kept quiet about your Revival stannage while we were all slagging it!

Hairycub1969 and Eric Generic like this.
  16. You know I'd forgotten Liza made #1. I can't stand Revival now, but this was 1989. And Eurythmics were one of my favourite bands...especially after Savage...but a #5 peak for the lead single was almost a flop for them.

    Hairycub1969 and phoenix123 like this.
  17. I really like Diva and parts of both Medusa and Bare. I think they’re significantly better than where Eurythmics finished up. But they do feel slightly inauthentic compared to the Eurythmics of Savage or Sweet Dreams. Is it that the Stephen Lipson production is so smooth and glossy that it takes the edges off Annie a bit too much? Or is there a new self-consciousness in her writing, as if she has identified what the typical Annie Lennox tropes are and is “doing some Annie”? I can remember feeling slightly...er ...cross after my first play of Diva, as if Annie had slightly sold out on me.

Eric Generic and Hairycub1969 like this.
  18. They broke threw on the "Boystown" Chart (Record Mirror) before they went Mainstream....as always, the gays were ahead of the curve...!

  19. Loved that Malcolm McLaren album that summer, shame it never broke big. Wonderful piece of editing on the playout so the song never gets going.

  20. That #1. Perfect.
