Top of the Pops BBC4

Watching last night's episodes and When I fall in love was Ant and Dec's best single by miles. They did release some decent stuff at this time but they were wise to end their music career when they did.

Literally would be happy to never see them again on TV these days though.

Also, Garbage's single mix of 'Milk' is poor. The album version is far superior. It just felt a bit unnecessary.

Nah, respectfully disagree, it's great. The two versions are different beasts. Them performing it on the MTV awards is what made me a fan. The TOTP performance is just flatly edited and too obviously mimed for a "live via satellite". Steve's barely even making an effort.

I'm so glad Tricky's management lost the battle in wanting to go with the Tricky mix as the single. It's just too in the pocket of Tricky's sound and would have crash landed their rock/indie fanbase at the expense of picking up minimal triphop fans. (Edit: linked below because there's always been long confusion that Tricky did the above remix, he didn't, he did the below one)

Looking back on those episodes, I can't help but think that One Kiss From Heaven by Louise was such a meh single choice when you had this totally 90s bop in the wings instead:

Indeed, both that and Belinda’s Love I. the Key Of C reminded me how you’d get some rather varied single choices.

The Best That You Bring was on the megamix so I wonder if it was planned for single release?

I wonder. I know Louise loves R&B so maybe she thought it was too poppy to be a single for her. She was never fond of In Walked Love after all.

Question re two acts from those last two editions: what actually happened between the Spice Girls and Blackstreet? 'Girlfriend/Boyfriend' was supposed to be a collaboration between the two groups, but then Janet Jackson took the Spice Girls' place … what actually happened? Did the Spice Girls even get in the studio with Teddy Riley?
Yes, they recorded it in Tacoma during the Spiceworld Tour so a studio recording does exist.

Watching the second of those two 1996 editions, I was struck by how many artists in the studio were wearing World AIDS Day red ribbons – a far cry from more recent times, when the BBC deemed they were 'political' (er – hello?) and banned them.
Seriously? Good grief.

I thought the ban was relatively recent, but it goes back to 2013:

Sorry but Mark Linsey can get fucked. The absolute whiplash of these two sentences.

BBC entertainment controller Mark Linsey said, although Norton "cares passionately about" World Aids Day, he was "in breach of BBC guidelines".

Wearing poppies in support of the Royal British Legion is the one exception.
