Top of the Pops BBC4

Sorry but Mark Linsey can get fucked. The absolute whiplash of these two sentences.

BBC entertainment controller Mark Linsey said, although Norton "cares passionately about" World Aids Day, he was "in breach of BBC guidelines".

Wearing poppies in support of the Royal British Legion is the one exception.
I have to agree and would love to know how this 'ban' came into being, after seeing that TOTP edition from 1996 … maybe something to do with the government of the day? By some strange coincidence, on the same evening on BBC Four we also had an edition from 1984, in which pretty much every studio act had at least one person on stage sporting a Band Aid T-shirt … which didn't contravene BBC guidelines?

War is surely more "political" than showing support and empathy with anyone suffering from illness.

Idiots.

Itv are the same. Didn't one of the Loose Women get in to trouble for not wearing a poppy this year and she explained that as she was not allowed to wear other charity ribbons on tv such as World Aids Day, she thought it wrong any one of them should be singled out as ok and others excluded.

Winner of the week was the December 1992 episode featuring Madonna's Deeper and Deeper, Whitney's I Will Always Love You, the Boney M Megamix and the amazing Brothers In Rhythm remix of Heaven 17's Temptation. Carol Kenyon did one of the best live vocals I've ever heard on Top of the Pops.

What a voice!

I was obsessed with the Boney M Megamix at the time, despite only being 12 years old and not having heard of Boney M before. I think I vaguely knew Rivers of Babylon. I then acquired their greatest hits but have always preferred the "modern" sound of the Megamix.

The following year was great for me with all the '93 remixes of "old" songs; Sister Sledge, Gloria Gaynor, Doobie Brothers, Village People etc. and I really bought into it. I love the Brothers in Rhythm remix of Temptation too!

Total tune! And yes, that December 1992 episode more than kicked 1996 in terms of quality methinks!

What a remix, one of the finest Brothers In Rhythm productions.

To think 'old' back then was 15 years previously. We're now more than twice that time away from that era.
