Re: Travel

Malarone is the usual go to medication for Malaria. It's fairly well tolerated with few side effects. Usually it's the digestive kind like cramps and diarrhea etc. The only pain is that you have to take it for a long period that starts 1-2 days before entering the malaria zone, the whole duration of your stay AND an entire week after you leave the infested zone. Hopefully you won't be staying long in the malaria zone.

I'm planning a Japan and S. Korea trip for this summer. I'm still in the pre-flight booking phase. I probably should have booked last week as the prices just went up. I guess waiting a little longer won't hurt. Now to just figure what and where to go.

Re: Travel

I think one of the positives of Malerone is actually that the bookend time is quite short. With a few of the others you have to take it for a week before, and then for 3-4 weeks after.

The problem is that it's £150 for 60 Malerone vs. £20 or so for the same amount of doxycycline!

Re: Travel

I've been told not to bother with Malaria tablets in Vietnam, the company said there is no risk there at all. Obviously the other places your going must have some risk I'm guessing?

Re: Travel

Canadian visas went online for my country and already more than half are gone. I can't pay (and thus confirm my place) until tomorrow morning. Here's hoping it'll go my way.

Oh yeah, I'm sticking to the coast in Vietnam so I don't need them (you can check out a malaria map for Vietnam, and any other country, on the 'FitForTravel' website). Won't need them for Thailand either. Most of Cambodia and Laos pose a risk though, and given that I don't have a set itinerary, that's what's causing me a headache. No idea how many tablets to get really, and with them costing £2.50 each the number I pick will make a sizeable difference.

Re: Travel

So my plans went a bit tits up, the Vietnamese government aren't allowing us to teach in the country now, so I'm having an all expenses paid teaching trip to China now! And a week stop at Ho Chi Minh on the way... wow, it goes tits up, and then gets better! So happy right now, China has always been on my bucket list. So yeah, everythings a bit messy right now.

Re: Travel

Sorry that's what I meant, that Cuba being on the list is weird. I am from the UK. My dad recons its because the health care is really expensive in Cuba, don't know how much truth is in that?
I don't know how much health care costs for foreigners there, but I have some friends that travelled to Cuba recently and they didn't complain about insurance costs. One possibility is that your insurance company is based in the U.S. - American companies cannot provide services in Cuba (and Americans cannot travel there).

Thanks for the reply. I was actually hoping to use the Metro and taxis to get about as the thought of driving in a big city abroad scares the hell out of me.
You're welcome! Sorry I can't give you any info on that, since I don't know how much cab fares will cost in LA, but I do think that you can go to most tourist places using the Metro system.

This has changed my life a little bit:

What a great idea. I should be able to get 12 visa photos for about 50p. Snappy Snaps quoted me £12.99 to get two 2"x2" photos done. Two! Passport photos costing £5 for 4 is already a rip off, but how can the cost be that much more for photos that are about a centimetre wider? Well fuck you Snappy Snaps, I'm going rogue.

Re: Travel

Does anyone know much about travel insurance? I'm currently deciding between getting it from InsureandGo, which is cheap (£50) and seems to do what I want but is terribly reviewed online, and First Direct which is recommended by Which? but twice the price. I mostly just care about medical cover, but I can't decide to go with a cheap policy that I hopefully won't use, or a more expensive one that will be more likely to pay out if something does go awry. I need to buy it by this evening!

Re: Travel

I would just go for the cheapest one, they usually cover the same stuff, you just might find it harder to get your claim through if you make one. But to be honest its very unlikely anything will happen.

I had an amazing 10 days in Ho Chi Minh City, wow, what a city! I'm currently in Bangkok and its a bit disappointing so far but I'm only here for 5 days so will see how it goes.
