UK Entry 2023

It won't be long until the UK entry will be announced.

So far this season we saw a lot of (unfounded?) speculation around Rina Sawayama. There's been a bit of chat on Twitter about Freya Ridings potentially representing the UK. Her song 'Weekends' has been named a Radio 1 Tune of the Week like 'Space Man' did last year. 'Weekends' was released and had a music video out in January though...

Interesting times ahead indeed!

The latest rumours I've heard are Grace Carter, and Mimi Webb.

Grace apparently is releasing her new song tomorrow night at 7pm which is the same time The One Show is on BBC, so a few people are thinking it's her...

I feel like the changed release date of Grace's new song couldn't just be a coincidence surely?

The rumoured names coming out this year (including the ones which are obviously just fan rumours) such as Grace Carter, Mimi Webb, Rina Sawayama, Claudia Valentina, Ellie Goulding, Freya Ridings etc. do seem to be interesting like potentially exciting artists. I'm glad they are going down the female pop star route (seemingly) this year, it's been a while since we've had a female singer represent the UK.

Also good that they aren't looking for a Sam Ryder copycat and looking a different vibes from musicians

Hopefully we're in for a treat.

We know that it's unlikely to be a solo male due to statements given by BBC representatives earlier this year, but it could be any of the large pool of up and coming crop of solo female talent. Ellie Goulding aside, I think the likes of Freya, Grace and Mimi fit what I would expect from the BBC/TAP's strategy.

Rina would be amazing but it feels a little too close to the sun to be real, even though I genuinely think she'd be up for it since she isn't quite 'mainstream' in a way I think she would like to be. She's very much an 'if you know you know' act and has a loyal fanbase and guaranteed ticket sales for her tours, but no individual breakthrough 'hits' to speak of. Freya, Grace and Mimi, by contrast, have bigger streaming hits to their names, but not necessarily the established name power in the UK or beyond that Rina has.

I can see why Freya could be a good guess bearing in mind the rollout of SPACE MAN last year (released, pushed by Radio 1, then revealed as the entry), but I struggle to see how you would shave 20 seconds off this to make it an eligible entry.

Based on this and the moving of her release date, I would bet on Grace, but also, who the fuck really knows at this point.

Even if it's probably not it, Weekends would really make for a killer Eurovision entry. Thr Rina rumour seems like fan fiction more than anything, but of course it'd be very cool if it somehow turned out to be true. Same would go for Ellie but I'm pretty sure that one's been 100% disproven.

That's a weird time.

Also that announcement Zoe Ball teased yesterday doesn't seem to have come, maybe she meant Wednesday...

Not 100% sure but I think Grace might have been discovered by TaP but no longer with them?

Sounds like she went through a tough time after being dropped by her record label

I feel like with the above post regarding Grace potentially no longer being with TaP and the fact that the hosts were revealed this morning and having the hosts and UK entry revealed on the same day could outshine the reveal, I feel like it likely isn't Grace now

Freya released the Weekends music video last month, which makes me think it's not that. I'm still holding out hope for Rina.

Has a Eurovision song ever been one that's already been released before it was announced as the countries choice?? I don't understand why people keep suggesting old songs. Surely the EBU would have to verify the songs first to make sure it complies with the rules?

Yes there have been in the past, but it's not the norm I'll grant you. Basically I think that the EBU don't 'check' the song until they've all been officially submitted at the HoD meeting in March - but i could be wrong.

Space Man for one, which was completely deliberate - so that people would judge it on its merits first, rather than a Eurovision entry. That's why some think they might be doing the same this year.

It also sometimes happens with other internal selections.

It also sometimes happens with other internal selections.

It also happens with some national finals too, Poland is the biggest example of this - Daria's Paranoia and Blanka's Solo were out long before being announced as potential entries, and already had a ton of streams prior to being announced

I really hope they get someone genuinely good this year as host nation, even if it means we go back to Love Island cast members and Nicki French after.

A couple of consecutive decent placements should turn the national attitude around.

Ok but Total Eclipse of the Heart is iconic and Don’t Play That Song Again is a lost schlager bop so let’s leave her out of that narrative…

The BBC really need to get their finger out and get The Saturdays booked for Eurovision.

Vanessa wailing.
Una pissed.
Mollie and her incredible adlibs.
Rochelle presenting This Morning.
Frankie not showing up.

It would be incredible.
