UK Ladies #1s of the '00s Rate | We Have A Winner!

Wait - some people actually think that 'nice background music material' songs like "Whole Again" (I know it's been out for a while now) and "Pure Shores" are better than a massive euphoric banger that is "I Turn to You"?

"Pure Shores" actually sounds like an Atomic Kitten song but instead a limp demo-esque drum loop production, it has an ethereal William Orbit one. Enough for me to score it a bit higher, but those melodies are just not worth of a high score, soz.

Like you can say you don't understand the love for it, but to keep saying it sounds like an unfinished demo reads like someone coming into a Madoona thread and saying "Like a Prayer sounds like some boring gospel song and I didn't come here for religion!"

So are "Run Away With Me" and "Into You", yet we both find both of these extremely overrated x

Good thing AI is taking over, I might be able to prove my point actually dd

Overrated but I still find them to be polished pop songs that I can understand why people love them. I would give them scores of 6 and 9 respectively. The latter is just more of a 'I overplayed it a bitsy' type scenario.

Oh I wasn't complaining about the production of "Pure Shores" (that was about "Whole Again" - I can point you to a number of unreleased demos which sound better produced than that song), in fact, I think that aspect is the best thing about the All Saints song, while "Black Coffee" definitely has stronger and more interesting melodies to me.

But yeah, I should've kept it quiet before it actually gets eliminated..

So, my 11 choice was pretty easy here. Melanie C's "Northern Star" is my fave solo spice album ("The Sea" is up there too) and "I Turn to You" is among the clear highlights on it. Pretty sure the song was a hit over here (it seems to have been huge across Europe) because I remember one of my neighbours blasting it from their car radio a few years ago, but I haven't properly herd it before taking part in the Solo Spice debut albums rate in 2018. It's just a relentless slice of (Euro)dance pop. The production and instrumentation are insane - I mean, those strings alone! And it's just hook after hook, easily one of the most memorable songs here, like it or not. All that and it has some subtle melancholy vibe to it, I'm just completely sold on everything.

The only thing I'll tolerate when it comes to critiques are Melanie C's vocals, I can definitely tell why they can be a bit marmite in general. The song itself is perfect, sorry some of you can't hear it. At least it already won an entire rate.

Both the remix and album versions are 11-worthy and here are two more 11s from that excellent album:

(Rick Nowels and Marius De Vries totally snapped on this album)

Glad that the chaotic legend joined me by giving this song the highest possible score - taste!

I Turn To You (Single Edit) gave me One For Sorrow (Tony Moran Mix) in that it completely stripped the song of its emotion for me. It really felt like a remix. I do still like it and can see why it smashed but probably would have appreciated it more if I hadn't been so familiar with the album.
