Late stage Thatcherism.
I had two years living there a while back and I miss it so much. I was working 20-25 hours weekly in a restaurant & had more money to spend than I did working a full time corporate role in London. Not to mention a far better quality of life. I don’t know how things are presently, but people there were much lighter and happier.

This. I left 8 years ago last week. Every time I go back everyone seems more miserable.
I agree that it is miserable here. And misery begets misery after 15 years of no investment in public services or even, like, any interest in supporting the general 'fabric' of society. The never-ending culture war shit has bored a hole right through my brain and out the other side, too.

I agree. It's endless misery. The Government is shit, whoever is in power. People can't afford houses or to live in general. Different groups are targeted in the media or by the Government to be their scapegoat - trans people, disabled people etc. I'm disabled and only work 2 days a week and have just seen that the Government wants to cut disability benefits. But they also admit that PIP disability benefit fraud is practically non existent. There seems to be a growing feeling that disabled people are lazy scroungers and I'm sick of it.

The problem is that for far too long cuts have been the "answer" but sometimes you have to SPEND MONEY to SAVE MONEY. Cuts might help the bottom line in the short term but we're now seeing the long term impacts.
Don't get rid of local services, education, support for young people and then act shocked when crime, mental health issues and anti-social behaviour get worse.

It’s just gutting that the reaction to things being so bad is to keep voting for more of the same - Labour, Tories and Reform are a sliding scale from least shit to most shit ultimately peddling similar ideas.
The real party that should be benefitting are the Greens - but the media have no interest in giving them a platform because we know their owners/high-ups would rather not promote a party that’s going to make them pay a fairer share of tax.
I’m still bitter about Corbyn losing so badly - things like free internet and extra bank holidays should have been such appealing things people would want to support but it was all spun so negatively.

The difference between 2017 and 2019 in how the media portrayed everything was shocking. There was a semblance of impartiality in 2017 and people liked what they saw. But in 2019 you had Emma Barnett asking if Labour were going to nationalise sausages and the BBC replacing footage of Johnson from Remembrance Sunday from five years earlier.

What is happening to the world and how do we stop it?!
The truth is: it doesn't really matter right now. But it needs to be a warning to Labour that unless people start feeling better off in real ways, people are going to turn to more extreme political actors.
